Doing the IR before the CPL will reduce the minimum hours required for the CPL course to 15 (you wont have to do the 10 hours instrument flying), for an extra 5 hours on the IR course.

The typical salary is probably somewhere around £35k with the big integrated schools paying into the 40's. The lowest salary I've personally heard on offer this year is £26k.

Correct, it doesn't need to be back to the same aerodrome. Your flight from Stapleford to Prestwick via Gamston will do it, the return leg doesn't come into it.

40k is about right in the current market for multi engine IR work. Certainly 25-28k is well below average, It's possible to earn 28k just doing single engine CPL.

There is no legal requirement to have passed Air Law before first solo. It's a PPL Urban Myth. However most clubs do seem to impose this rule which is probably quite sensible.
