Will our Challenger II now head to Poland to fill the gap?

Ukrainian air defences have reportedly been bagging a fair number of them, set to increase with all the odds and sods the west is providing.

A distinct shortage of ships in the UKR navy.

It wouldn't be that much of a stretch to mount the launch canister on a small vessel e.g. a power boat (along with a big red button to fire it and a tinfoil covered tarp covered to protect the crew from the rocket efflux...).

But if Bucha is anything to go by Russia is simply making the Country stronger and filling them with so much hate and loathing through these actions that the Ukrainians will fight back to their last.

A classic repeat of the civilian bombing by both sides in the Second World War. Nobody seemed to notice the obvious flaw in the plan then and it seems they have learned nothing this time either

Lots of rumours circulating that 'something' may happen on the day, if only to spoil the sense of occasion... Even a bomb some distance away from Red Square will cause panic amongst the ranks.

My money is on a much scaled down event taking place, the live feed being intercut with archive footage (e.g. of Vladolph taking the salute etc).

Either way its going to be a security headache for sure, way more so than it usually is.

jolihokistix 29th Apr 2022 11:09

Staggered, it probably won’t be ‘live’ exactly.

NutLoose, you might want to give the Russian combat engineers some credit for their innovative way of preventing a bridge collapse! :E

You really need to read this as to the forced mobilisation of the Ukrainian in the donbass area, its chilling reading, I've added a couple of excerpts

https://euromaidanpress.com/2022/04/...cupied-donbas/

According to both Ukrainian and pro-Russian sources, the Donbas locals have been generally used for the so-called “intelligence by battle” — a Soviet-era tactic of throwing the soldiers into battle without any intelligence in order to find out where the defenses may be weaker.

Another common Russian practice of usage of the forcefully conscripted is committing them to attack fortified Ukrainian positions over and over in order to exhaust the defenders so that the regular Russian troops could later face less resistance trying to storm the positions.Both Russian “practices” lead to disproportionally high casualty rate among the forcibly mobilized Ukrainians of the Donbas. In this way, Russia has been trying to spare its own troops by de-facto eliminating the mobilized locals.

On the other hand, the forcibly mobilized participate in Russia’s ongoing genocide of Ukrainians not only with their own deaths, but also contributing to the destruction of Ukrainian settlements and killing their fellow Ukrainians.

If it is true, it is a specific war crime. Not that there is a shortage of crimes to choose from. Not only that it is prohibited by the Russian Military Manual (1990)

Russian Federation
Under the Russian Federation’s Military Manual (1990), it is prohibited as a method of warfare “to compel persons belonging to the enemy party to participate in hostilities against their country”.
&
The Russian Federation’s Regulations on the Application of IHL (2001) states with regard to the behaviour of forces in occupied territory: “It is prohibited to compel the population in the occupied territory to serve in the armed or auxiliary forces of the occupying power.”

IHL Rule 95 Forced Labor
Section B. Compelling persons to serve in the forces of a hostile power

Hague Regulations (1899)
Article 44 “Any compulsion of the population of occupied territory to take part in military operations against its own country is prohibited.”

Article 52 Neither requisitions in kind nor services can be demanded from … inhabitants except for the needs of the army of occupation. They must be in proportion to the resources of the country, and of such a nature as not to involve the population in the obligation of taking part in military operations against their country

Hague Regulations (1907)
Article 23(h) of the 1907 Hague Regulations provides: “A belligerent is likewise forbidden to compel the nationals of the hostile party to take part in the operations of war directed against their own country, even if they were in the belligerent’s service before the commencement of the war.”

Article 52 of the 1907 Hague Regulations provides:
Requisitions in kind and services shall not be demanded from … inhabitants except for the needs of the army of occupation. They shall be in proportion to the resources of the country, and of such a nature as not to involve the inhabitants in the obligation of taking part in military operations against their own country.

Geneva Convention IV
Article 51, first paragraph, of the 1949 Geneva Convention IV provides: “The Occupying Power may not compel protected persons to serve in its armed or auxiliary forces. No pressure or propaganda which aims at securing voluntary enlistment is permitted.”

Geneva Conventions III and IV
Article 130 of the 1949 Geneva Convention III and Article 147 of the 1949 Geneva Convention IV provide that compelling a prisoner of war or a protected person to serve in the forces of a hostile power is a grave breach of these instruments.

ICC Statute
Pursuant to Article 8(2)(a)(v) and (b)(xv) of the 1998 ICC Statute, “[c]ompelling a prisoner of war or other protected person to serve in the forces of a hostile power” and “[c]ompelling the nationals of the hostile party to take part in the operations of war directed against their own country, even if they were in the belligerent’s service before the commencement of the war” constitute war crimes in international armed conflicts.

ILC Draft Code of Crimes against the Peace and Security of Mankind (1991)
According to Article 22(2)(a) of the 1991 ILC Draft Code of Crimes against the Peace and Security of Mankind, “compelling a protected person to serve in the forces of a hostile Power” is considered as an exceptionally serious war crime and as a serious violation of the principles and rules of international law applicable in armed conflict.

ILC Draft Code of Crimes against the Peace and Security of Mankind (1996)
Under Article 20(a)(v) of the 1996 ILC Draft Code of Crimes against the Peace and Security of Mankind, “[c]ompelling a prisoner of war or other protected person to serve in the forces of a hostile Power” constitutes a war crime.

UNTAET Regulation No. 2000/15
The UNTAET Regulation No. 2000/15 establishes panels with exclusive jurisdiction over serious criminal offences, including war crimes. According to Section 6(1)(a)(v) and (b)(xv), “[c]ompelling a prisoner of war or other protected person to serve in the forces of a hostile power” and “[c]ompelling the nationals of the hostile party to take part in the operations of war directed against their own country, even if they were in the belligerent’s service before the commencement of the war” constitute war crimes in international armed conflicts.

That's spooky,
Is he going to change the name of the Kremlin to Wolfschanze?
  • I mean, he has the shake of the hand thing going on;
  • He attacked across Ukraine, (in reverse direction) silly lad;
  • He attacked and forgot about the weather;
  • He took direct command from the Military as he was a brilliant [KGB spook/ Corporal/ etc];
  • He committed genocide, and war crimes;
  • He reads chicken entrails or tarot cards or something, to do with numerology;
  • Is Putin a painter?
  • Is Putin a vegetarian?
Spooky. lots of material for SNL or Eddie Izzard.

Hopefully the day to day activity includes sacking the President, but the Russian Constitution is pretty miserable in that score, but not impossible.
Is he going to send himself off to Lefortovo if he gets knocked on his butt? That would be the "cheer heard around the world".
