Sssshhhh !

Wasn't there something on the tellybox about this too?

Perhaps the info that this kid was given was misleading as Nutty says.
Changing the odd word in a document which is sent to different people gives you a good idea where to start your search.
It also allows the FBI to collar a relatively minor individual and sends a message to others who might stray from the righteous path - we are watching you.

My sincere hope is that no damage has been done and the FSB are now on a wild goose chase reacting to spurious information, while pulling themselves apart looking for spies in their midst. It would appear nobody is safe in Russia and nobody trusts anybody else. Better bump off the next chap before he bumps me off.

There has been very little said from the Ukrainian side other than the usual comments. Might be this was planned - I do hope so.

So he might get ten years? Not that much given the TS stuff leaked and what Assange got threatened with.

NutLoose 14th Apr 2023 11:27

Targetting civilians.

NutLoose 14th Apr 2023 11:33

One hopes they get returned home to the USA. :(

I thinks it's possible to be given 10 years for each document leaked, so it could be quite a stretch in prison.

Remember the Ukrainian tank destroying the trench system after the grenade was thrown, the one where it reversed back and forward over part of it, well there were three survivors taken prisoner and this is their long interview.

.

That would only work with a strictly limited distribution, which was not the case with these documents.

It’s not the first time, of course, but I still can hardly grasp how one can take the oath of enlistment with right hand raised and then do this. Things must be very lax in the Mass ANG, and perhaps beyond. The revelations can have immediate and long lasting impact on the current conflict and future ones. This traitor needs justice and it needs to deter those who would follow in his footsteps.

Oh dear. How sad. Nevermind.

I dislike videos of prisoners of war being interviewed. Besides the obvious propaganda value and sort of spoils of war feel, it's not like they're ever going to be even a mild critic of the side that just captured them, much less be a fervent ranting patriot of the side they're from. I don't trust any anti-own side sentiment.

They do make the claim that of the 83 of them that started that attack, they think they're the only ones left. The one was buried in the trench for a night next to/under his dead comrades before he was dug out. Then when they were being rescued, they had to suffer the additional insult of being mortared by their own side.

A comment that the one did make was that they expected to fight Americans, French foreign legion and foreigners and had not seen a single one. He was surprised he was fighting "just ordinary folk from Donbas".

It all has, no doubt a very strong propaganda value, however, its definitely compelling.

Obviously the videos released by both sides are going to show us what they want us to see, but it remains that one side wants us to see them interviewing POWs, and the other side wants us to see them committing war crimes.

Global Nav,

This latest case is very interesting considering the motive behind it as compared to other similar cases down through the years.

With the exception of Chelsea Manning who got a Commutation of Sentence by President Obama....all those who were apprended suffered very long prison terms with some being sentenced to natural life in prison.

The real change we see over time is the ease that technology creates for the transfer of hundreds of thousands of documents.

The results raise questions about why there are so many classified documents, why the easy access to very sensitive documents, and why security is so lax where those very sensitive documents are stored and archived.

Of note is the fact that some of the documents released by one culprit outed an illegal domestic spying program being used against American Citizens by the Federal Government.

We see two culprits living in Russia evading prosecution.

That begs the question....if one runs across information that shows illegal acts by. the government....what do you do with that information and knowledge of said illegality?

I believe you are wrong there. He says that 83 prisoners came out of prison as a group, but he doesn't say that they stayed together. All discussion of this attack speak of 15 to 30 Russians.

I'm unsure why you raise this, SASless. This incident has nothing at all to do with that, but to address that point, there are whistle-blower laws, none of which, I'm sure, recommend putting documents onto the Net.

SASless 14th Apr 2023 18:19

`Not complicated at all....GN raised an issue and I merely pointed out how there are different motives for these leaks we see over time.

Usually it has to do with personal financial gain or perhaps an affiliation with a particular foreign nation or in an effort to expose something illegal....and now it had to do with an online gaming group and self importance.

You are correct that there exists "Whistle Blower" Laws....but reality shoots that down sometimes as the very people who are doing the illegal activity are the ones that would have to support the conduct of an investigation of their own activities.

That is the question I posed....what do you do when you run across something that is huge but illegal and you are just a very small cog in the wheels of what is going on?

I can see differences in many of the cases.....Pollard for example had some sense of loyalty towards Israel when he did what he did, Walker did it for money, Ames and Hansen for other reasons.

This latest one is a brand new one....and what is particularly telling is it was not the Government that figured it out first.....but rather a non-government group that did.

SecDef Austin has ordered yet another review of DoD Security of Classified Information.....and one only has to wonder what it shall uncover that was not done post Snowden and Manning to prevent what just happened.

This is a very complex situation and its effects upon the Ukraine War is part of the Damage Assessment that is going on currently.

The damage to sources and methods is also being assessed.

Let's hope the gross failure of the government to prevent and detect this latest breach is being investigated with an objective of actually for once holding people at the highest levels responsible for their failures.

It should start with the Kid...and his immediate Supervisor and Co-Workers....and go right the way up the Chain of Command and identify the failures and shortcomings of the system as a whole.

It certainly is not about one snot nosed kid who is into computer games who had a need to feel important.....it goes far beyond that.
