No flights until midday.

This fire is going to be a logistical nightmare, as the fire ravaged car park with drop off area, as seen on the right, is hugged on all 4 sides by the CTA ring road. To take the car park down and rebuild it will mean a safety zone is needed. I guess the best that can be hoped for is that only some of the structure needs replacing.

The road seen on the left is the exit for car park1 . Will that car park even be accessible, as it uses the same route past Car park 2? Apart from the Terminal or the control tower burning down this is as bad as it gets

I would be extremely concerned about the risk of collapse.

Structural steel behaves unpredictably under sustained high temperatures, and without a fire suppression system that structure has now been exposed fo very high temperatures for a number of hours.

6:20 this morning. Not a good day if you have been diverted and then dropped off a mile away if your car is in the airport.

bit hard to install on a top floor unless it’s attached to lampposts , but surprised to hear it wasn’t installed elsewhere.

It wasn’t on the top floor it was one floor below and no there are no sprinklers in this new car park. Low cost airport, low cost car park but then how many multi-storey car parks have sprinkler systems?

Airport now closed until 3pm. Wouldn’t surprise me if it remains closed throughout the day.

Obviously a terrible incident but nobody has been seriously hurt (from what we know so far).

Looking at the BBC coverage who are located south of the runway. The whole of the car park is fire damaged and not just the terminal end.

Alot of based aircraft flight planned to start arriving back from 12:00. Does mean passengers can expect sheduled departures to restart though.

For a place which has its own major fire station, on site, there seems to have been little control of things until it was too late. One wonders what procedures the fire team had for such landside fires.

Its a completely open air, open sided steel structure on about 5 floors. Reports of up to 1,200 cars damaged (presumably not counted, that just being the car park capacity.

Big disorganisation for Easyjet among others, but are their Ops team actually based there and unable to get to their offices ?

Low cost operations - for everything except the car park charges, which are eye-watering there. One hopes they have good insurance.

The OPS Control Centre moved away from the central area just over 4 years ago.

Couldn’t have happened closer to the fire station

There are emergency access gates on the south apron that lead onto the car park roads, this could not have happened closer to the fire station. Cross the alpha link, open the gate and voila..

Genuinely baffled at how long it took to get under control. No doubt it’ll have to knocked down now. Let’s see what they do after that.

I suppose it’s more work for the construction company that does all the building work at the airport.

I know that all vehicles that enter the terminal area have to go round that car park....did they build a alternate road so say busses could acces as normal but by pass the car park road to exit....
just asking as that would get traffic ( busses ) moving to Mid Term and Long Term etc.
Hopefully the DART can reopen, assuming no water damage

I'm guessing passenger handling capacity will be significantly lower for some time. Would one expect airlines to shift some operations to other airports over the winter ? There's a shiny, relatively new airport in Southend with plenty of spare capacity...
