Why does Dubai have to mean Emirates? Maybe La Compagnie are considering it. They could certainly fly a 757 there from Luton.
Why can't Thomson fly to Cancun from Luton? I thought one of the advantages of the Dreamliner was an ability to use shorter runways?

I believe the 787-800 is heavier than a 767-300 with similar powered, but more efficient engines?
I am confused though, I was at a meeting when I was told the 787 could fly to Hawaii fully loaded off the Luton runway?
Maybe the sales brochure and reality are somewhat at odds?

Just like the unattainable mpg figures my car manufacture claims my car will do.
That was built to allow 747-400's to pass underneath. You can be sure that Luton would get a cut down price version in the style of the 150m of footbridges Luton is getting for its car parks.
As for a potential crossing point I would say it would be cheaper to build off the existing pier as there is only a single taxiway to cross. It would have to be built at an angle though to avoid Harrods apron. If it came off yet to be built pier B it would have 2 taxiways to cross including new taxiway Foxtrot and would end up being longer than Gatwick's.
Whether the airport would want to sacrifice its long term car is debatable as that is a big money earner for the airport and another location for it could be hard to find.
Gatwick's cost £110M 10 years ago including 11 additional stands which was supposed to add 3M passengers

I presume that once El-Al get their hands on theirs, we will occasionally see them in passenger service at Luton from/to Tel Aviv?

Luton's demographic is Benidorm not Hawaii, I for one will be gobsmacked if that route ever got onto the real planning table, let alone came off it again as a yes!

I think the point was and I was under the same impression that the 787 could operate fully loaded from LTN to somewhere like Cancun. I'm no techy though, Haven't studied any of the numbers.
As has been said I can see Dubai being La Compagnie. Orlando would be interesting. Not that any are definate.

I flew twice to Orlando direct, once during 1989 and again a year later from Luton. 26 years later a far more modern jet with sophisticated engines cannot? I guess that is called progress. Mind you, back then, folk were given leg room!
Hawaii was just an example of the stated performance of the 787 from Luton's runway, must have been empty, on a cold day and the crew eating lemon curd sarnies.
I think that you'd have to be barking mad to start Luton-Dubai, but then again, Silverjet were just about to give it a go!

redevelopment weekly update
Work proper starts on the new duel carriageway. Photo taken from the roundabout by the Holiday Inn
Work also starts on the new drop off area
Also work has started this week on the terminal infill
With the pedestrian crossing closed a new route from arrivals to get to the bus station and drop off area opened this week. As can be seen there is zero weather protection.
Work continues on the multistory car park
No shortage of equipment for the MS car park
Work also starts on the new drop off area

Phase 1 to be finished next year.
a. Dualling of the Airport access road
b. Minor changes to the Holiday Inn Roundabout to accommodate the new
road
c. Remodelling of the Central Terminal Area (CTA) and the Drop-Off Zone and
Taxi Rank
d. Remodelling of the junction into the Mid-Term Car Park (MTCP)
e. Construction of the multi-storey car park
f. Construction of the pedestrian bridge link across the CTA to the short term
car park or any agreed alternative
g. Construction of the link building between the old and new terminals
h. Extension of the baggage reclaim area within the terminal
i. Construction of the walkway to Stand 9L/60
j. Infills to Pier A
k. Construction of new Pier B.
l. Extension to 08 taxiway
Phase 2 comprises the construction of Taxiway Foxtrot and the extension to the West Apron. These works are planned to commence in 2017 and be complete by 2019.
Phase 3 will include the extension of the parallel taxiway at the 26 end. Completion 2020.
The above was how it was going to be phased but things could have changed since last February. Worth noting that they need all the soil they can get from the existing upgrade to build the 26 taxiway which might be one of the reasons it is the last job to be done.

McLaughlin & Harvey has a £51m contract and joins Buckingham Group Contracting and Whitemountain as principal contractors on the airport’s redevelopment.
Buckingham Group Contracting has an £8m contract to construct a new 1,700 space multi-storey car park at the airport.
Whitemountain, part of the Lagan Group, was awarded a £13m contract in November 2015 to build a new bus interchange and improve drop-off facilities.

All of this work going on at Luton is very exciting
I was just looking at the plan for Luton and one thing has been mentioned (I think!). The check in area is quite narrow and there are not enough check-in desks during peak times especially in the morning rush, so it would be nice if they would expand the area and add more check in desks to enhance the passenger experience and ease congestion within the terminal.
Also does anyone know any of the plans for the terminal interior and when it will be completed. Is there a rough time on when the terminal infill/extension will be complete also?

Is there a detailed timeline anywhere? What is going to be finished and when in Phase 1? Just a bit going on at the moment!
The first stage of the CTA remodelling will involve the reconfiguration and resurfacing of the short term car park with the new outer circulation road. The Drop-Off Zone will be constructed in two stages to minimise disruption and the central Bus Terminal work will be remodelled in stages to enable continuous bus access to the terminal building.
The pedestrian bridge between the terminal entrance and the STCP will be completed by the end of 2015.
Overall, the landside access and circulation works will take twelve months to complete. Work will be planned to avoid the peak busy times as far as possible.
The works to the terminal building will commence with the construction of the walkway to Stand 9L and the infills to Pier A. The extension of the baggage
reclaim area will follow. The main construction of the Link Building will commence in summer 2015 when all of the internal reorganisation and the
provision of some additional internal capacity has been completed. The most significant element of the construction is the new Pier B and link to it which will commence towards the end of 2015 and take some sixteen months to complete.
Completion of the terminal construction works and therefore Phase 1 is due in early 2017.

I can't now see the rest of the short term car park being resurfaced until the multistory car park has opened as the short term car park has already lost around 50% of its parking spaces and is already full so there is no space available to close more sections for resurfacing.
I have been told the multistory car park will take 9 months to build and will be opened around September thus missing this summers peak period so I would say the CTA will be finished by the end of this year.
Signature is due to be finished in November.

McLaughlin & Harvey own web site says:
When fully complete in 2017, the redevelopment will deliver:
A brand new canopied entrance and exit plaza for protection against the weather
Expanded security search, baggage reclaim and immigration areas equipped with the latest technology for speedy passenger processing
Double the amount of retail and dining space. A tendering process is underway for 47 units covering Luxury, Affordable Luxury, High Street and Food & Beverage brands
Extra comfort and capacity with improved departure gates and a new passenger boarding pier
Extensions of the airfield taxiways to improve operating efficiencies

One of the complaints about Stansted is that passengers have to walk through a shopping centre to get to the gates. Well Luton will be the same.
All passengers will initially weave their way through the old security hall and new terminal infill which will be luxury brands. They will then turn left across the old entrance below which will be affordable luxury.
They will then enter the main departure lounge with its shops but from the extreme right rather than the present middle.
It is going to be one hell of a walk for anyone in a hurry needing to get to stands 1-4 as they will then have to walk the full length of the departure lounge before heading off down a walkway. It will make the terminal seem much bigger than it really is.
Another 7 retail outlets selling food will be under that canopy so expect to see some considerable table and chairs.

It will be no different to certainly Terminal 3 at Heathrow or Gatwicks South terminal where you enter straight into the duty free shop.
Unfortunately they only want you for your money!

I was thinking that if Qatar operated the A321LR in the future could Luton sustain a flight to Doha connecting to key markets like Pakistan, Dubai, Australia and many others.
Also could the current runway at Luton handle a Thomson 787 to Orlando or Cancun?

Does anyone know if easyJet are set to announce any more new routes from Luton? They have only announced new Jersey flights so I was a bit curious. If they were going to announce any new routes, could anyone take a guess at what they might be?
