OK so we have discovered the terminal is 42 metres higher than the railway line.

A quick look on Google reveals this little gem

On the Docklands Light Railway the entrance to the tunnel from the original London and Blackwall railway viaduct to the tunnel to Bank has the steepest gradient on any British railway at 1 in 17 (5.88%).
Say the station is a mile from the terminal this would make it 5,280ft away, add 5.88% and that would add 310ft or 94metres. So a docklands light railway type train could get the the terminal.

Back to the question do you go over or under taxiway Alpha?

Also there is another question. If the airport can attract 12.3million passengers without a link and probably over 13 million next year with more to follow. What value does an expensive to build link give the airport unless they are looking at life beyond 18 million?

Looking at that link provided by Buster I think we have also discovered where the airports next multi story car park is going as that is a big chunk of land. A dedicated rail link could also serve a car park as well. Even without a rail link a car park bus could serve the site.

With the dualling of the road leading up to the airport and with space around very limited, what would be the route of this train link? Also are there not many obstacles in the way?

This is again very exciting news for Luton and another positive of flying from/to the airport in the future.

If the new owners are really being bold, then maybe they think about something like this. Going under Alpha with a new rail link, and achieving it by moving Alpha completely.

I know I'm getting carried away here, but this plan would have two main plus points:
(i) the new taxiway could be built without much impact on air traffic movements on the existing taxiway Alpha
(ii) once in place, the existing taxiway Alpha could be taken out of service which enlarges the CTA area with land around the current fire station and in front of the tower. Land which could, of course, be used for the rail terminus.

Back to reality now!

Whatever we think of, you can be sure we will all be wrong. I still think it will terminate at hangar 89. If it did it would be closer to the terminal than the drop off area.

This is great news and will certainly be transformational for the airport. I can't wait to see what option they choose, the route it will take and what it will look like.

An opportunity perhaps for easyJet to sponsor it and have the trains painted orange?

How do you put a rail link in from bottom left to top right? Airport Way looks in the right place? As for a large car park there, only 15 min walk to the proposed site of the new LTFC ground. Don't forget that the airport and I am certain that this proposal are within the new Enterprise zone? http://www.luton.gov.uk/news/Pages/L...-new-jobs.aspx

My further thoughts. The new Luton Airport Enterprise Zone, around 395 acres in size, will consist of three linked sites surrounding Luton Airport: Stirling Park, Century Park and Airport Business Park.

Could it be that a 'rail' system will connect all three sites, not just the airport? This would undoubtedly mean a tunnel under the airport from adjacent to Luton Parkway out to Century Park? The Enterprise Zone has promised to deliver 10,000 jobs and no doubt a sustainable transport policy would mean a promise of public transport availability?

I have extracted this from the Century Park Facebook page....Century Park will be Designed as a mixed use development, it benefits from outline planning permission for a total of 143,025 sq m across a range of unit sizes. This provides for 123,291 sq m of office, industrial and warehouse space; a 18,573 sq m hotel with 1,161 sq m of ancillary leisure together with 10,446 sq m of retail accommodation.

The close proximity to London Luton Airport makes it suitable for occupiers seeking airport related uses, as well as for general employment purposes.

I like LTNman's suggestion of moving taxiway alpha so that it joins with what was the compass bay. This has some advantages that would I'm sure be productive:

1. Allowing the airport to continue full operations whilst a new taxiway bridge is constructed.
2. That bridge having a wide enough span for a dual carriageway road and a light rail track to pass underneath.
3. Some loss of stands on the 'pond' (-2 or 3) offset by an opportunity to double the current size of the South Stands (+4 or 5).
4. Another new stand and/or exec aircraft parking area alongside the EZY hangar on the stub of what is currently taxiway alpha.
5. More space in the CTA south of the current tunnel.

Hello, I'm very new to this forum. I've been reading the Luton thread for over a year but was yet to make an account so I thought it was about time I did.

Anyway, I've been reading what LSG said about moving over taxiway alpha and I came up with this. Its very hypothetical and I know it will not happen as the masterplan is in place but this is what they could 'technically' do.

It was LGS6753 idea and not mine.

Whatever is done there is a cost involved so you can be certain they will be looking for the shortest route that is the cheapest to build and has the lowest running costs.

Starting from Parkway the obstacles that have to be crossed are the A1081 (New Airport Way), Airport Way and Taxiway Alpha if the route ends at Hangar 89 or A1081 (New Airport Way) the entrance to the mid term car park and Taxiway Alpha if the route ends on the multi story car park side.

Construction methods for the entire route could include tunneling, cut and cover (which is how the taxiway Alpha was crossed in 1995) or an elevated railway, which is how Birmingham Airport links to its station and how the terminals at Gatwick are connected. Personally I think it will hug the ground where it can but will be elevated to cross obstacles. No doubt I will be wide of the mark when plans are announced but I have to say these are really exciting times for the airport and with so much going on with new routes, airlines, building work and now this it is hard to know what to focus on.

Your idea LDNLTN, was quite similar to what I had in mind. It is a good idea as it will accommodate the train link and give Luton a potential 3 extra stands for aircraft which will help park extra planes in the future at busy times, like in the morning 06:00 - 09:00. How long would a project like this take roughly (out of curiosity)

Goodness, this has been a busy little forum over the last few day!

However I am a little confused and hoping someone can give me some straight forward clarification!

Do we have Aer Lingus and Nowegian opening routes from the airport this summer or not?

Some people seem to be saying, yes they are and other no, there are no slots available. So what exactly is the story in Balamory?!

I've tried Google, neither airlines make any mention of Luton and opening new routes! Where are the sources, these rumours have come from?

No those airlines were refused slots at ORLY (for flights to other places) along with Vueling who wanted to operate into LTN from there. Transavia on the other hand were successfull.

So just to clarify, you are saying FOUR airlines wanted to fly between Paris Orly and Luton...

Transavia - who was successful
And Vueling, Norwegian and Aer Lingus - were all refused the slots at Orly to fly the route - REALLY?!

I understood the posts about Vueling wanting to fly the route and was refused.

But I thought Norwegian and Aer Lingus were wanting to fly other routes from the airport, and was no mention of them flying to Orly. So are these two latter airlines starting to fly from Luton or not?

Hopefully you can now see why I am confused, and getting more confused by the minute!

Eh I was as confused as you were. The guy worded it so it looked like all those airlines were refused slots at LTN. The actual one turned down was Vueling by Orly not by LTN. The other airlines were also refused slots at orly but had nothing to do with LTN. I found it in a french article earlier.. no idea what the link is though.

It was a bit confusing to be honest when I first read it but what's it saying is that Aer Lingis & Norwegian applied for slots at Paris Orly (for example, maybe for a DUB-ORY route with EI and an OSL-ORY route with DY) along with Transavia who applied for slots to operate ORY-LTN. But EI & DY got refused and Transavia were accepted for the ORY-LTN route. Hopefully it make more sense now!

I was thinking that since we were talking about EI, do you think Aer Lingus Reginal could operate a DUB-LTN route in competition with FR. They currently have a monopoly on the route with over 325,000 passengers!
