The declared max rate is 32/hr but we have achieved more. It isn't just the infrastructure that decides this but the airspace and the interaction with our SIDs and those of other London airports so merely putting the parallel taxiways in isn't the only answer. There are plans afoot to deconflict our routes with others.

Steve
Listened to you since my humble days as a spotter ( Ah, Monarch Brits, Air Spain DC8s and we were so glad that Cout Line hung on to Reg based callsigns) to being a PPL and Old Warden. Hope retirement is an excuse for your FISO skills to be heard more widely!

Steve .. all the very best for a long and healthy retirement. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Luton ... and you were one of the people that made it so.. ..... you never did manage to sell me the trip in a Tiger Moth .. something I bitterly regret.
Try me again some time.

How many additional movements per hour would be achieved if the taxi-ways were to be extended to the end of the runway, both ends, also, what is the current maximum rate?

I really don't want to play Devils advocate here . . . . Yes, I do!! At the end of the day LTN is way past capacity, people can talk all they like about additional taxiways etc, but LTN is a regional airport and the only logical alternative is an "Airport in Essex". 2 mile long runway, easy access ( has anyone recently observed the un-controlled chaos in the 'cul-d-sac'), and a BAA owned land area that is 50% bigger than LGW. LTN is a really good airport in the Lorraine Chase view and Silverjet are going to add another dimension, but otherwise . . . .

If you think Luton is well past capacity, jump on FCC at the parkway then DLR and take a look at London City and its operation?
chopper69, you probably were stating that Luton had reached its capacity with 2mppa a few years back, now it is closer to 10 million.
I must assume chopper69 that you are in the paid employment of the BAA?

BAA, the airport operator, paid its security staff to protest at a public inquiry hearing into the expansion of Stansted. The Times
The staff were given paid time off from carrying out security checks at Stansted airport to support their employer’s application to increase the number of flights by 75,000 a year.
More than 40 baa staff and airport contractors attended the inquiry yesterday. It is understood that BAA encouraged staff to join the protest by suggesting that their jobs would be at risk unless the expansion was approved.

The last thing that I wanted to do was spoil a well respected persons retirement party, but . . . . there has been a LTN/STN competition for many years (I fondly remember the response when I rang my mate in BY shortly after 'the' announcement of Londons Third Airport!) and all I was trying to point out was logistically STN had the edge by a long shot, there was never any other choice! 2 mile long runway with good access v 1.3 mile long runway perched on top of a hill, you work it out! and by the way I don't work for BAA, I'm just a realist.

Thank you to everyone for their kind words on here and on the RT this afternoon and evening. It is very much appreciated.
Yes, I shall still be at Shuttleworth and a few other places as well.

The central area problem is certainly an issue for the airport right now - traffic is frequently backed up to the Ibis roundabout. I fear that once the new dual carriageway is in place the situation may become even worse, since it will enable traffic to reach the central area at an even faster rate.
The frustrating thing is that the employment of a single traffic steward, plus letting taxis back into the 2 rows next to the terminal which remain blocked off, would do so much to improve the congestion.
Interesting news about the increase in passengers using Luton Airport Parkway - although the number of non-airport related London commuters (like myself) who use the station is unknown. This however is another problem area, with the shuttle busses often full to bursting at peak times. I often see a full bus leave with still dozens of people waiting at the station unable to board - some of whom resort to paying for taxis. The airport needs to realise that at certain times of the day the shuttle bus frequency probably needs to be doubled.

As for the endless debate about which airport is best we can all throw in different factors to support one airport or the other. I could mention that it’s now 23.15 but looking at the live information board at the station I can see there are 12 train arrivals in the next 2 hours. At Stansted there are just 4 but then Stansted is a branch line service with a long journey time serving just 2 London Stations. On the other hand Luton has a direct rail service to 30 London Stations.
A pro Stansted supporter could mention that Stansted does have easy access to the terminal. The frustrating thing at Luton is that it would not take large sums of money to change the road layout and drop off area. Also a year or two ago the airport did trial a flexi bus for the trip to the station, which made a huge difference to the comfort of passengers.
On a positive note, today saw the first concrete poured for the new cargo apron
