LUTON - 6
Aer Arann recently boasted 9,000+ pax on both their Irish routes, which AFAIK are both operated twice daily. Assuming 70-seat aircraft, and 31 day months, I make that a load factor of over 100%!
Can someone with knowledge of flights actually flown work out the LF? If it's "over 100%", no wonder they are putting on a third daily rotation!

DHL are advertising for ramp staff. I thought Reeds did the handling for DHL, is that not the case?
Also a new hotel is going to be built directly behind Parkway Station once the existing warehouse is demolished. Anyone know who the hotel chain is?

An airline, not previously seen at LTN, could be on its way from the start of the summer schedules. It would have no based airframes, but 3/4 arrivals per day could result. Nothing has been signed yet and negotiations continue, but from a reliable source, things are looking good. Don't ask me who it is because I have absolutely no idea. We will just have to wait and see.

Is this something new? The Napier Park project, at the bottom of Airport Way, was to include a 4/5 star hotel for the airport, but I think this is still going through the planning stages, so could this be something totally different.

The hotel will be over 7 floors and have 255 rooms. I have no idea who will operated it but work has already started in fencing off the area.

ThomsonFly Cutbacks
Luton was becoming a nice little scheduled hub for ThomsonFly for their London customers, flying to niche destinations where other LCC at Luton have not gone. But the cuts have been quite far reaching and the following have been given the chop:
Prague (ends Oct 07)
Dubrovnik (ends Oct 07)
Jersey (end Oct 07)
Marrakech (ends Jan 08)
All of these routes were on sale a few weeks ago, going into the winter period, but have all been withdrawn. I know the JER, PRG and DBV routes have been selling very well. Also ThomsonFly have been competing on the RAK route for over 2yrs now and both have maintained good loads, so seems weird they are pulling out of this route now...
With First Choice no longer basing an A320 at LTN next summer, and integrating their flights with the ThomsonFly routes along with the loss of the scheduled routes this is quite a major cut back at LTN...
Be interesting to see how long the LTN-TLV route will last, passenger numbers do not seem to be a problem as this route was supposed to fly with a 738 and has been upgraded to a 752 throughout the winter.

DBV finishes end of Oct but is bookable from LTN, 3 x weekly, between 1 July 08 & 2 Nov 08, probably because it falls within the more usual holiday routes. However this could change at a toss of coin, if recent events are anything to go by.

Hi everyone.
Just wondering if someone with some LTN knowledge can help with a quick question.
I'm doing an assigment for university and need to know what long haul destinations were served by Britannia's 767-200s from LTN, given the runway length.
Sorry if it's been asked before, I've tried to find answers myself but with no luck.
Cheers

Britannia/Thomsonfly long haul
In the mid 1970s Britannia operated a pair of Boeing 707s on long haul group affinity charters from Luton to places as far afield as Los Angeles and Hong Kong. In theory you had to be a member of a “club” which could be Luton Bowls Club to get around the rules. Twenty years on they flew Boeing 767s to Australian cities of Sydney and Perth mainly for the Austravel company and have recently flown the occasional cruise charter flights to Fort Lauderdale.

Well the 767-200's are now on there way out (if not already gone) from the Britannia/ThomsonFly fleet, and are ironically flying with another LTN based carrier. That being SilverJet!
Britannia has never been a big player with Long Haul flights from Luton, the ones I can think of, off the top of my head have been ad-hoc charters. They use to fly to Perth/Sydney with charters for AusTravel in the late 1980's and early 90's. These were eventually switched to Gatwick, and think they only flew from LTN in the first place because of route rights problems from other London airports with the Australian Government. They were routed something like LTN-BAH-BKK-PER-SYD and was a looooong flight!
Las Vegas also operated from Luton in the 1989, but cannot confirm who the airline was...
Orlando was also flown by Britannia in the early 1990's, but these could have been operated by 757-200's with stops in Bangor. Like many other flights at that time were operated by 752's from regional UK airports to MCO.
In more recent times they have flown a few direct charters for cruise companies, including New Orleans, Bridgetown, Boston and Miami. These are usually one off flights and operate during the winter season.
Please be aware none of these flights have ever lasted long, and only usually operated for one season. It seems LTN could never draw in the passengers for the Long Haul charters!

Not picking a fight or anything, but it's standard practice for airlines to cut services in the winter schedule. Nothing sinister about it.
Lets not get our knickers in a twist, it's not worth it!!!

Ah, it's Mr Davies from another aviation forum. ;-)
I'll be flying from LTN in Nov (EZY to BCN) for the first time in probably 5 or 6 years (I normally fly from STN). I realise it's such a broad question, but what's it like nowadays?
Cheers.

My sauce (not tomato) tells me that ACDL and the Town Hall are now talking in depth about expanding the airport the impasse having ended?
If Silverjet are getting the south stands, why not have the old domestic terminal as well?
I see Wizz are about to order even more planes, so the Tommo business loss might be more than made up for?
