Birmingham Airport plan to create super terminal
Jun 19 2009
BIRMINGHAM Airport is aiming to knock two terminals into one and double passenger figures to 20 million in 10 years in a massive expansion programme, it was revealed today.
Airport bosses want Birmingham to throw out a huge challenge to the likes of Heathrow and Gatwick by creating a new super terminal and pull in millions of extra travellers by attracting Selfridges-style stores to the complex.
New airport boss Paul Kehoe said Birmingham was the “last great aviation opportunity in the UK” following the recent approval for the £130 million 400 metre runaway extension, opening up markets such as the American West Coast and China.
And he forecast that a Tory win at the next election would block new runway developments at “Horrible Heathrow” and Stansted, allowing “Beautiful Birmingham” to spread its wings and attract an extra 10 million passengers a year.
Mr Kehoe told the Breakfast Connection organised by Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry: “We have a little piece of real estate that we can exploit that will deliver dramatic changes at this airport.
“I believe that Birmingham is the last great aviation opportunity in the UK. The challenge for us is to take two terminals that we have and make them one. Having two terminals is not very cost-effective.
“The extra 400 metres plus the one terminal concept, I believe, will give us an airport that is truly world-class.”
Mr Kehoe said Birmingham had missed out on millions of extra passengers by backing British Airways rather than low budget airlines.
“We backed the wrong airline when we backed British Airways. We should have had Easyjet, Ryanair and bmibaby. We should have had all those lined up years ago and we didn’t. We are having to retro-fit all that traffic back in to improve our market.
“We should not be 10 million (passengers) - we should be 20 million today.”
John Morris, Head of Corporate Affairs at Birmingham Airport, said consultants were already looking at the one terminal plan while approaches were being made to big name retailers and other smaller operators.
“This is not about knocking large sections of the airport down. The infrastructure is already in place.
“This is a project that is being looked at. You would get some really well known brands and names in there and you would get critical mass.”
Mr Kehoe said the airport was out to attract a wide range of retailers, from Selfridges-style big premium stores to low value chains.
“What we have to do is tailor our operation to match our customer needs. We are an international airport but we are not reaching our potential - we have to reach our potential.”

This could be the big challenge for MAN.
BHX now has a fantastic boss in Kehoe who speaks the truth and sense. ie)
Just what MAN need to come out and say. BHX looks like it may, one day, take on MAN and STN for passenger number!
Also, what is the benefit of having more than one terminal, especially at airports such as MAN and BHX where there is no definitive carrier like LHR or CDG etc.

Barbed BA comments from MAN
Geoff Muirhead is reported as saying "Concorde's the only thing BA have honoured us with" in today's Manchester Evening News, along with a comment that last Christmas me told an audience that BA had abandoned the regions.

Mahan
Some time in July I think, however with the current problems with sanctions being mentioned perhaps not at all.

BHX Passenger breakdown
I'm just adding my support to OltonPete. I for one find his analysis very interesting and as already said must take many hours. Pete will admit that the figures are crude and are in no way an indication of yields. Keep 'em coming mate.

being a little bit flippent
I like the idea of "knocking the two termini togather" - If they keep bulldozing -starting from T1 through T2 and righthand down a bit - they will be able to include COV as a GA/Biz jet appendanage too - Why stop there - long term business objective - covered walkway to LTN - Now they can become as the anouncement indicated, a 20 million pax throughput Airport. I have to reluctantly agree with Mr Kehoe about the long term cost of accomodating BA's needs and the same applies to MAN too. I'm afraid the cost of oil will determine how airports develope in the UK. Its good to see a positive outlook though.

Of course FR will be far more loyal than BA were!! Yes BA screwed the airport in the end but the airport didn't complain about millions of pounds in profits they reaped in then... Hindsight is wonderful.
The single terminal has been talked about before and has always made sense. Better late than never.

Ryanair yesterday announced a 'Freeze on Growth' at all nine of their UK bases with no new services being introduced.
Michael O'Leary blames 'Labour's £10 a time, £2Billion airfare duty causing the collapse in the UK air travel industry'.
I suppose it's unlikely now we'll see those 2 additional aircraft in October.

Thanks
I'm in agreement with Alvechurch & Call100 - A certain individual seems to be a lot of Mouth and no Trowsers - Look at the STN Tale of plans, Woe, Twice Woe and Thrice woe - See the STN passenger statistics - A tempory blip maybe - time will tell. The whole situation in the UK; Airport developement wise, is problematic - The idea that you can leave things to "The Market" to provide the impetus is sadly short sighted - The tales of COV and BLK spring to mind too. Anyware (served) in Europe and back for £60 - What is the true cost ? in the long term economically - As somebody else said in another thread reciently - Airport developemnt reflects the broader ecomomic health of the regions served. And yes I did BHX/BFS a couple of times paying between £150 (BA) and £80 Odd (Mearsk) - A small island, geographically awkward from an aeronautical perspective, with some very long runways in the wrong places.

Ryanair cannot grow for ever
Ryanair wants to operate tax free in the UK on the ground that it brings in money to UK. I am sure most of its planes were taking people out of the UK with money to spend overseas. It is not the departure tax that is stopping growth but the fact the cheap credit has ended. People will still take the big summer break but the days of a monthly city break for some are over.
I am sure that Ryanairs growth has been at the expense of the other airlines at Birmingham, East Midlands & Coventry. Ryanair are now not going to provide BHX with the pax but I sure MOL still wants even more of a discount. It could be time for BHZ to raise the fees for MOL as he is not holding up his side of the bargin.

MOL's Loyalty

If some think that FR are loyal to BHX then they must have short memories.
Sure Ryanair virtually deserted BHX the last time the airport upped it's fees to them....but they came back, I believe on the airport's terms not theirs.
I reckon that Ryanair needs BHX nearly as much as BHX needs Ryanair. if FR walked out I don't think it would take long for Easyjet to fill the void - though probably with rather less imaginative routes - though they would probably fly to airports closer to the cities they advertise than FR does!!

Sorry to go off on a tangent, guys but how bad has capitalism got that passengers at BHX have to pay a non-refundable £1 for use of a baggage trolley??
Not only do airlines reduce baggage allowances to a point where the majority of passengers fall foul of 'excess baggage' but the airport is getting in on the game and fleecing the passenger for another quid!
Scandalous in my opinion. Maybe on my next trip I will pull a muscle in my back and sue the airport for not providing trolleys and then p*ss my pants on a Ryanair flight cos I didnt have a Euro for the toilet!
Shocking!
