Looking Good

Two new hotels almost complete, the new international pier construction started, new multi storey car park going up and the set down road mess being sorted...looking good at BHX at the moment

Runway extension?

What about the planning application for the new tower and runway extension? I thought from previous posts that there was a deadline for Solihull to make a decision one way or another.

Bye bye Skyeurope

SkyEurope to drop BHX - Bratislava

SkyEurope will be ceasing their four times weekly
Boeing 737-700 service between BHX and Bratislava
on Sunday 28 September 2008.

Ryanair commenced a three weekly service to
Bratislava on 1 July 2008 when their second based
aircraft commenced operations from BHX.

One particular schedule airline at bhx last winter didn't operate
a single flight on a Wednesday
That particular airline don't fly from anywhere on a wednesday, I believe that it is used as a maintainance day for the aircraft since they generally used 24 hours on the other 6 days, so the engineers get them on a Wednesday unless any other problems arise on other days

Still making good progress..Huge support and little (if a bit vocal) opposition,
It's all a bit more complex than the average house extension. Although the planning application is in Environmental issues etc have to be dealt with or mitigated.
I don't think there is a deadline for them to make up there minds...To be honest I wouldn't want them to rush it and be open to challenge.....

REUS 2369 PAX - AVG 148 LOAD FACTOR 78%
GIRONA 3917 PAX - AVG 151 - 80%
TORP 1135 PAX - AVG 95 - 50%
RZESNOW 1232 PAX - AVG 154 - 82%
BILLUND 1379 PAX - AVG 115 - 61%
DINARD 1248 PAX - AVG 104 - 55%
POITIERS 1521 PAX - AVG 127 - 67%
SHANNON 6224 PAX - AVG 120 - 63%
FORLI 1057 PAX - AVG 132 - 70%
PISA 3292 PAX - AVG 127 - 67%
TRIESTE 1008 PAX - AVG 126 - 67%
OPORTO 116? PAX - AVG 146 - 77%
Don't forget that FR's breakeven load factor is around 55%.

It'll be interesting to see how those routes perform in time, allowing, of course, for seasonal demand variations.

By the way, does anyone have a complete list of the routes BA operated from BHX? Thanks. :-)

Whilst not a complete list as such, I remember them operating the following (the list is such as I remember it until BA Connect were taken over by Flybe):

Domestic

Aberdeen
Edinburgh
Glasgow

European

Paris CDG
Lyon
Nice
Barcelona
Madrid
Milan MXP
Rome
Hamburg
Hannover
Dusseldorf
Frankfurt
Stuttgart
Vienna

They'd tried other destinations over the years - I remember Southampton, Dublin, Munich, Brussels and, of course, New York JFK. I think in the seventies they did Jersey too. In addition, of course, for some years routes were operated by Maersk Air Ltd as a BA Franchise but they weren't BA routes.

Hope this helps

BA Services from BHX

Add to the list:

Dublin
Belfast
Shetland Isles (Lerwick?)
Manchester

Rember flying on a Bae 748 MAN - BHX in 1986, think the flight routed:

Lerwick - Aberdeen - Manchester - Birmingham - Southampton and back. Seem to recall the total flight time Lerwick - Southampton was 6 hours.

BA

JPN

Some more: -

Toronto as an add-on from JFK on the 757

Zurich - 1-11/732
Geneva - 145 - possibly Maersk as well?
Belfast City - RJ100
Belfast INT - Viscount/1-11 - probably then onto Maersk
Newcastle - in the form of Brymon/Maersk
Copenhagen - S1-11 then onto Maersk/Brymon
Berlin - 1-11 then Maersk/Brymon etc
Cologne 1-11 BA then Maersk/Brymon had a go and Duo
Cork possibly in the form of Brymon/Maersk
Malaga - 1-11/732 at least
Faro - 1-11
Malta - Saturday night in the early 70's as a Trident -Schedule?
Heathrow - Viscount & Trident

Jersey (Viscount) and Southampton (J31) as mentioned plus Munich.
Dublin was often the S1-11 on a "W" from MAN, almost exciting seeing
a G-AVM? with no airstairs at the front .

It is difficult remembering which ones were mainline, which ones
were Maersk and which ones were both or just Duo.

Some were briefish as mainline such as Cologne, Copenhagen, Berlin,
Zurich & Belfast City (BACON).

Didn't BA operate Murcia from BHX as well, I'm sure I remember when Gazza got dropped from the England squad in '98 he flw into BHX from Murcia. I'm also sure the media at the time explained it was the airport with direct links to Murcia, lot changed since then if my memories are right!

As far as BA colours go, I think Murcia was only operated by Maersk, probably as a weekly-ish charter on their 735s.

Pete - thanks for adding to the BA list - evokes some memories as well as questions as some of the routes that apparently now do well from BHX (e.g. Malaga, Faro) were dropped by BA well before the LCCs came on the scene. Presumably BA simply couldn't get the yield but I find it slightly odd given the frequency of flights to those destinations nowadays.

Re the BA Malaga & Faro it must have been yields as I remember
noting many a 99 pax load on them.

It is quite a list and most did well especially during the big trade
exhibitions at the NEC. There were exceptions though such as
Cologne but every one has failed on that and the only surprise
is how many airline bothered to try.

Never got to fly on the 1-11-400's but found the service and
rides on the 500 magic (especially Maersk), never liked the
732 but the 319 was awesome. Some would say boring but having
nice shiny, smooth aircraft and great crew to take you on hols
(BCN) it was great if not short lived.

JPN

Are you sure about that load factor, with fuel unhedged and
many 0.01p fares (Okay not Pisa & Girona) in June.

However July loads seem promising and if that anna aero analysis
posted a while back is anything to go by the all should be well in
the short term at least.

Exclamation Set Down Road

Would love to know what they are actually gonna do with the chaos in the bus lane area, its been a favourite with taxis and many others to use as an unofficial set down road for ages and that stretch of road with its smashed cones and cars dodging everywhere is chaos! Police and traffic wardens seem to be giving it a wide berth and letting them all just carry on. Do think one solution would be free half hour in what was the short stay car park. It might discourage the very many cars roaming looking for drop off places - I see the area between the traffic lights and ramp road security is also gaining in popularity for drop off purposes.
