FR coffee/SN/Transat

fr-

Never a true word said, Mrs OP said it was vile and I would say possibly the worst I have tasted, mind perhaps it is the price that leaves the sour taste in the mouth ? Needless to say we didn't make the same mistake on the return.

Brussels Airlines

First visit by a SN A320 today, which although not totally unexpected I assume was due operational reasons rather than the passenger load?

Air Transat A332 started today as well but tempered with the fact the Saturday service will not be operating as far as I know.

Ryanair winter 2011/12

Some more flights released: -

Tenerife four flights up one with two on a Saturday one from the TFS base.

Arrecife two flights as last winter and down one from now

Las Palmas two flights as now and last winter

Fuerteventura two flights as now but new to winter for a few years for FR

Faro - two weekly all winter from the Faro base (started February 2011)

Malaga - two weekly down from eight now and three last winter

Next release seems to be the Eastern European routes and Girona

Flights with no hint of release still - MLA and LDY. Krakow also operated
last winter but Kaunas did not and that looks like it is staying this time.

It appears three aircraft intend to be used from BHX based on what is
released.

Still no winter Palma & Murcia which have operated in the past and would
have no competition from BHX.

The croissant was a bit dry (had one a few weeks ago), but the sandwich served after they're done with breakfast flights by far makes up for it.

Re OP's posting

Yet again OP's post re Ryan Air, seems to have hit the button (early days I suppose) - A gradual decline in off peak travel ( Re Winter months) - Re the "Noise" with respect to Monarch - I hope it comes to something, but as said by many posters that are better informed than I - Hopefully.

A pattern of steady decline in the spectrum of business seems to be happening here and in other Airports.

I bet a few Stato's monitor the traffic at UK regionals like BHX - and I bet it's a lagging indicator of "peak oil" when ever that occurs . I have told a friend of limited means, to visit her sister in Canada before the cost of long haul travel becomes prohibitive - A sign of the times.- Yes I had the privilege of low cost to the US a few years ago, never to return.

Tom @ bhx

New TOM charter routes from BHX to Sicily (not sure if Catania or Palermo), Marrakech (at last!) and the previously mentioned Boa Vista now officially launched by TOM for Summer 2012: its been a long time since I typed BHX and new routes in the same sentence

Tom

Lovely to have the new flights, but do the based units and rotations stay the same in which case the question is.

Instead of what?.

Thomson 2012

It will take a while to sift through the timetable but a quick check seemed
to indicate possible reductions to the non-Red Sea area of Egypt such as
Luxor and Taba.

Certainly Boa Vista is a Wednesday which is Luxor day.

I did see Red Sea flights Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, which
is the same as this year assuming Friday is HUG. On that basis it could
be an extra aircraft as no other obvious losses but the more likely option
is the same amount of aircraft perhaps with a couple of extra rotations squashed in.

The worrying aspect is that there are more 73H's coming and less 757's
in the future which will mean a decrease if replaced one for one at BHX.

The disappointing aspect is that I could only see three long-haul
flights - the same as EMA. Wed MBJ, Thur CUN and Fri SFB.

Punta Cana remains at EMA and they have SFB restored as well as CUN.

Car Park charges

I see the drop off fee has doubled since my last visit. Now it's £1 for the first 15 minutes instead of 30 mins. £2 now for 30 mins, but they have reduced the £1 a minute to £5 per 15 mins.

So is Birmingham now becoming a more 'major' airport or is it still being under delivered in terms of routes?

IMO JSCL BHX has got great (one?) terminal facilities (even if it is a bit like a shopping mall), the International Pier does finally make the airport feel like a major airport but as for routes its woefully underserved in terms of a spread of European destinations. Long haul I think is OK for the regions needs, India is of course the big missing link and perhaps another Middle Eastern hub at a push

Has Punta Cana gone next year then? I know La Romana has been dropped from next winters timetable but I was under the impression it was being replaced with an extra rotation to Bridgetown but your saying that's not operating either? Puerto Plata has also dissapeared this summer so that means all three Dominican Republic destinations have gone. More bad news. I thought with the Dreamliners coming we might have seen an expansion in Thomson long haul from BHX - the Maldives were rumoured as were Goa and Phuket but it looks like the complete opposite is happening.

Bridgetown is still operating in the winter but I should have made it a bit clearer, as I was on about summer 2012.

You are right though Dominion Republic it has gone as a destination from BHX once the last inbound arrives tomorrow from PUJ.

Winter shows Cancun on a Thursday, Sanford Friday only from 23/03/12, Montego Bay Sunday November up to 4/12/2011 and the aircraft then goes
to Bridgetown.

Montego Bay returns in late March on a Saturday.

Re long haul destinations for TOM out of BHX,I believe the 787s are not now coming until 2013 at the earliest .

As for the Maldives and other far flung destinations like Phuket..the runway simply isn't long enough. The 787 8 has turned out to be heavier and not meeting expected runway specs, so looks like 2014 for those non stop.

If WW intend operating the suggested routes then they will have to make them frequent enough, and at operate at business friendly times as these cities are amongst the most expensive in Europe, and with the low value of sterling against the euro, and the tough economic environment, they'll be struggling to make a living from weekend break trade alone.

Postive news (rumour) anyway.

Postive news (rumour) anyway

Sorry to be a killjoy but tempered in true BHX one step forward two steps back style by news that TOM is dropping all Dom Rep flights and reducing other long haul flying from BHX for summer 2012......being positive however I really do hope that this time WW will make these routes (if indeed they happen) and hopefully others work, by concentrating on EMA and BHX they have a golden opportunity to go from strength to strength as the Midlands low cost airline just like Jet2 is the Norths. Let FR and ZB clean up on the BHX-Med/Canary routes, come on WW carve a niche out for yourselves elsewhere. Lets just hope LH don't put a spanner in the works......

ATNotts - have to slightly disagree, got flights with TAP from MAN-LIS for 90 quid return in July and a three star hotel for 35 quid a night B&B only 10 mins from centre of LIS, I wouldn't call that very expensive by other Euro standards
