I seen a presentation on the knock site there 1m living within 90 minutes -
Over the years I have seen loads of maps used by the various airports to show their "catchment".

The map that you refer to is on page 8.
Its fascinating what is included as their catchment.

The reason all the routes were pulled from shannon was also a row over charges! Knock has this advantage for years, lower debt and lower fees.
1million people within 90mins of knock, thats just a cheap PR scheme, because most of them million people wont use knock. Shannon would probably have a larger catchment area within 90mins anyway.

Your really dressing up knock as larger than shannon, even last year knock has less than half the number of passengers than shannon.

Aer lingus could not hold paris as the DAA gave them slots only for 4pm to minimize the effect on Dublin and Cork, so the service was a failure as it could not cater for business passengers.

Now your last statement was a COMPLETE and utter contradiction to the rest of your post. Bristol was dropped as a dispuit of charges, just like the cork routes are being moved to shannon. Do you really expects any route to do better at knock than at Shannon?

Ryanair will operate 11 routes from knock next summer, and operate 5 at the moment.

Shannon has the passenger potential for year round routes, and Paris will probably stay for a long time. Ryanair got a deal, but they have got simular deals all year.

It is all about numbers, because yield will be very similar for all UK routes from all irish airports.

Sorry for any hostility above, but your arguments are not very valid.

Those maps just relate to road travel times, just one factor in flight decisions.

See Shannons:

Ya appreciate the promo fares but fares still cheap outside of the promotion - I meant mainland European access as knock has a lanzarote through winter also im delighted for shannon I use it regularly and great to see the turnaround there but like all regional airports too reliant on ryanair but at same time they the only show in town for UK and European growth

Aer Ryan appreciate your comments I'm not in anyway contradicting myself I'm clear throughout I never said knock routes do better than shannon it's actually you who is saying that ryanair should be moving knock routes to shannon with no basis - for what it's worth given the west of Ireland diaspora in the UK I actually think the likes of Liverpool (cancelled in shannon) and Birmingham are stronger routes from knock than shannon but that's about it - shannon has stronger business market certainly - bucket and spade routes much of a muchness - why wouldn't most of the 1m knock catchment use knock out of interest if flights available - obviously where not they go to Dublin - knock is a seasonal airport but most regional airports largely are! Good debate though enjoyed it! That's why I love air travel!

That map is....interesting. People in Portlaoise, Kilkenny, Waterford and Athlone are going to use Dublin because a) it's less of a drive (maybe equal in the case of Portlaoise with traffic), and b)wider selection of routes and better frequency. I'd even say east Galway and the city are going to be very tempted to use Dublin. Sure I've driven from Shannon to Dublin airport in 2 hours after a night shift. Dublin is within an easy commute of the entire country bar Kerry, West Cork the northwest now

I never said ryanair should, I said im surprised they haven't.
These are the reasons

1.)Lower landing fees at shannon
2.)Larger catchment at shannon.

If the route is struggling a bit at knock, surely it would be more profitable from shannon. Do you agree with that?

"Liverpool and Birmingham are stronger routes from knock"
What is your basis for this? Liverpool is right beside Manchester, in knock ryanair had only seasonal competition on flybe's service to Manchester, but in Shannon they had a 3times daily Aer Lingus regional service.

Would you not consider Wroclaw mainland europe?

Why? Because once you reach 90mins other airports can be easier to reach.
Athlone is 80mins from knock and most of athlone fly from Dublin.

And no matter how small the country and airports, an extremely lively debate is always possible. Ireland especially due to all the airports in the least densest populated area of the country.

MAN-NOC is year round and has been for years, and yes I agree presently MAN-SNN has higher capacity than MAN-NOC but this hasn't always been so, a lot depends on who's running the route. BHX-SNN has done well in the last while with double daily enabling day return, another reason I think EIR are mad to be pulling out but the route has run intermittently for years with BE and FR dropping out, BHX-NOC has ran non stop virtually and had at times some very high passenger numbers with MYT and WW on the route - since WWs demise or has become more of a regional operation with lower numbers and higher fares.

Good points mart901 the northwest of England is one of Knocks strongest markets - it's also important to note they also have an East Midlands service 4-5 times per week in addition so obviously strong market there - if BHX etc was so strong why did EIR withdraw?

Either way as I said think market for airports in these services

Completly agree.
- if BHX etc was so strong why did EIR withdraw?
Aer Lingus regional needed the aircraft for the Donegal route. So BHX,EDI,BRS were axed
Manchester was axed due to competition.

I do not doubt that at all, if there is one market all irish airports have in common its the UK market. There is not an airport in ireland (With commercial flights) that does not have a flight to the UK. My point is that with the shortage of aircraft you can only operate one of the 2 routes, so which would be more profitable? My educated guess would be shannon.

"Aer lingus could not hold paris as the DAA gave them slots only for 4pm to minimize the effect on Dublin and Cork, so the service was a failure as it could not cater for business passengers"

The DAA dont allocate slots, Airport Co-ordination limited do for Irish airports, and in any case, SNN is not even slot controlled! Plus, DUB hardly requires "protection" from SNN when it already has about 12 flights a day to Paris.

Nothing more than another "conspiracy" Urban myth - that is not how airlines decide their schedules, in particular at a quiet airport that is merely schedules facilitated.

Someone seems to have set up a page called the Shannon Airport Support Group on Facebook? Is this an official page? Remember there was a meeting earlier this year for the Supporters of Shannon Airport? Is this page a result of that.

In any means, look it up, they seem to be advertising Shannon and want to lobby the government to Guarantee shannons EI T/A and Heathrow services if they are sold to IAG.

According to the Shannon Airport Supports Group facebook page, Wikipedia and Sunway, Izmir will be returning in 2015. It started in 2013, stopped in 2014 and is starting again. Rather jumpy isnt it?

Have you a link for that? In any case it was getting very late for it to be not bookable.

Shannon being removed from the German wings site is probably the biggest hint though.

It's on their website and agree they shouldn't have published a few weeks ago that the route was operating unless this was based on fact as they look a bit stupid now!
