Mixmasta, you sound like you might be older than all the rest of us... combined! I'm sure that can't be true, but you make valid points, especially about the meris. You might be pleased to know that it's still possible to find a clean one that's over the legal age though, admittedly, one does need to be rather more careful than usual, these days.

I've probably already said too much, so I won't say anything more about that...

Yes, Terry went to Ipec on Argosy's and Dc9, with Jack.

Both now in QLD, Terry at Noosa and Jack around Caboolture.

Heard a story years ago about how Jack would do Looooooow level aerobatics in the mustang, well below regulatory height. No amount of cajoling could convince him to raise the altitude, until one DCA inspector told him that he was so low only the front row of people could see him.

Terry is still going strong and always got a big grin and a great story.

Jack and Terry .. two of nature's wonderful gentlefolk .. well known to me from an earlier life.

.. until one DCA inspector told him that he was so low only the front row of people could see him.

.. quite a bit higher than inspector ... and included the comment in an official DCA letter to Jack (they were, apparently, good mates and this was back in the days when the DCA chaps didn't have to look over their shoulders all the time in respect of anything they wrote) .. I have a copy of the letter around somewhere which Jack gave me for a giggle years ago ...

salut !

Jack Mc

J Tulla,

I agree totally with your comments.

Jack has his hangar at Caboolture, but lives is Bris. I haven't seen Terry since about 1987, hope he is doing well.

I remember a flight in about 1987, when I was flying a B 727 from Mel to Drw, with Jack's late Wife and lovely LADY,Judy and Jack, he was in the sharp end most of the time, he commented that he had never seen so much of Oz, in the daytime.

In Darwin that evening we had dinner with Guido and Lyn Zuccoli and a great night was had. Two days later the Mc's where with me again to Bne via, Isa.

Unfortunately some short time later Guido lost his life in a T-6 accident in the NT, training a newcomer to the T-6. It was the only time he had never worn a Bone Dome. Vale Guido.

Jack is still rebuilding a Hawker Demon and many Dirt Track speedcars in his shed at home, he was as you may know, a dirt track bike rider, ( crashed in, Adelaide) and speedcars.

John Tulla, if you would like to contact ZEKE, pm me with your contact number and I will check with him, as to advising you of his contact number.

Cheers.

Apinun,

robroy

Robroy,

Knew Jude well when she was with AN ... lovely girl ... I presume that you were likewise .. in which case, we probably know each other from those days.

Remember the Demon project well ...

The lovely lady who nursed him back to health after the bike prang was introduced by Jack to the chap with whom she now is paired .. it's a small world indeed in this aviation game ..

Another wonderful tale relates to his DC9 endorsement program with IPEC years ago .. he was having the odd problem with the dreadful TAA sim and it was getting him down just a tad .. then came the session with standby electrics (I didn't fly the Diesel - curses in arrears - maybe they called it something similar) ... Jack waltzed in later on with his usual beaming .. "Hey, pal ..." then the punchline " .. it flies like a real plane with all that stuff off " .. probably had more than a little to do with my acquiring dinosaur status at an early age and never really taking to button pushing all that enthusiastically on the Boeings.

Have the great man's contacts, thanks ... just have to arrange to get to BrisVegas to have a long overdue convivial or ten with him .. and I'm sure that he will give me what for for my tardiness. With workload the past few years, I haven't had time to scratch myself ... let alone swan about in QLD.

... and we never quite finished the DC3 endorsement ...

regards,

John

J. Tulla,

Yes, I am ex AN and prior to that AAPNG ( NON S&&B ) of course. When you ever get up to Bris, the meeting, for want of a better word, is at the Sands Hotel, in Cleveland, every Wed evening at around 5.30 to 6.oo pm, for about and hour or so. ex, RAAF, PNG, AN, TN, MAS Driver Airframes and DCA Engineering guys.
I can only get there on the odd occasion, as I live near Breakfast Creek, which is a long way to drive home after a few drinks.
However, on Fri. evenings we meet at the Breakie Creek pub, in the Long Private bar, between 6 to 7.30. Retired Lapuns, like me, current VB guys, ATCers and of course SPUD MURPHY. At the Breakie Creek, I can walk there in around 5 minutes and waddle home, in about 7 minuttttteeeesss.
Yes, Judy was a lovely lady and QUEEN BEE of the AN, Flight Attendants.
On the flight from DRW to ISA, a meal flight, I called the SFA and said to her , give Judy, in 1A F/C an Econ Salad, Jack nearly P one ssed himself, the Ladies in the cabin were betwixt and between, but when the SFA came back to the sharp end, and seeing Jack, the F/O, F/E and I on the verge of P one ssing ourselves she then realised, it was a setup, Judy got her F/C meal and Jack got the salad
Jack, after many years, remarried a lovely Lady, Wendy, My wife and I were at the wedding, ZEKE, hasn't changed, still the great guy he always was and is.
After his crash in Adel, the Lady who nursed him, Joan, was introduced to Denis C, by Jack.
Denis and Joan are now in Adel and I am assisting him in getting a Sim. Instructors position in Maroochydore.
Were you ground or flight crew? If ground, did you know Chris Duve, another AN, Aviation fan and Confederate Air Force Colonel .
Cheers,
Apinun,
robroy

You have most definitely established your credentials, sir ...

I look forward to catching up with you at one of the aforementioned Wednesday/Friday soirees ...... I get briefed from time to time regarding the goings on ...

No doubt DPC will be keen on your endeavours on his behalf.

Loved the salad tale and can well imagine Jack chuckling his mischievous chuckle at the time ...

May have known Chris but the name eludes my memory of faces ...

The reference to "the angry ant .." suggests that we knew each other quite well ... how did the motto go ? .. eats, .. ? .. you might even recall my trademark blue sheepskin draped over the seat back ... surprised that you haven't worked out who I am previously .. (RP ?)

I left Png in 1974, so I have really lost contact with the place.
However I suggest you PM, Tinpis, who lives in Darwhine, Sharpie, or Chimbu Chuckles, they were there long after I left and they, being slighty younger LAPUNS than I, may know of some wantoks (friends ) still there.
A word of advice, be always VERY aware of TERRAIN and where you ARE.
Cheers
robroy
On second thoughts, maybe Sharpie is more Lapun than I

"...anyone give some advice on what i should have before i head to PNG..."
  • Immunisation for everything;
  • Gross of condoms;
  • A healthy thirst; and
  • A brain scan!
I'm sure the others here will add more useful "must haves" for life in PNG!

The only thing I would add to Torres comments aircabbie is that the only reason most of us were in PNG at the time was because we HAD to be there

Apart from TatTAAs and Ansett there was nothing much of an industry in Oz

KWANAS god bless em came up to PNG about 1971 I think it was on a recruiting drive. PNG pilots got the right stuff for them they said
We were all excited as buggery and reckoned we were in like Flynn

As soon as the KWANAS neddy got back to Oz they retrenched about 400 pilots I think it was and kept em on a string for maybe about ten years?

Humbly apologised to Junior for telling him to stick his job up his @rse

The "Gold Fish " club member, who is only one of about 10 in all the Worlds Navies, was doing " Hit and Gitts " on the Melbourne of the coast near Brisbane for a bunch of , " VIPs " on board.

He had, Hit and was doing the Gitt, when he was passed by a wheel.

First thought, some silly bugger has just lost a wheel, whoops, it's me.

Later, landing on a foamed runway at RAAF Amberley, on the drop tanks, with minimul damage to the Skyhawk, I have never asked him about the , jockeys.

Once again, seen the onboard video, I shake and lower my head.

Cheers,

robroy

I was an Marine Engineer , however they were still flying the skyhawks , which we sold to NZ then leased back from them until maybe 5-6 years ago . Amazing Acft to watch at Low level during Air defence Drills . Those Kiwi pilots where bloody mad !
A few hit the dirt in early 2000-2001 one in a low level refueling ( inverted) at Nowra aother i NZ and i belive another in WA, Which virtullay saw them taken out of service which was a real shame .

The hills were much bigger, sharper and harder when I was up there.

Also it was hotter.

Re: advice - make it 2 gross of "gumi bilong kok" as, on each occasion, I would use 2 with tiger balm in between.

Gold Fish Club

Firstly, I've been a ppruner for nearly 6 years and in the last few days I have sooo many PM's and not being used to this my replies have been a bit slack, SORRY.

re the " GOLD FISH CLUB ", to be a member, one has to be a Naval Aviator and have been " RUN OVER ", by your Aircraft Carrier.

eg, My friend had a weak launch, due to some problem with the catapult, tried to power out of the prob. to no avail.

In the video, ( launches and captures are recorded ) you can see him trying to eject. The ejector seat for some reason, did not operate, SPLASH, couldn't get out in time, Skyhawk sinking, Carrier approaching, getting awful dark, noise of propellors getting LOUDER, gets rid of canopy and being on oxygen, sits tight until the light returned and the prop. noise was decreasing, then abandoned said Skyhawk for the surface.

In the video he hits the surface thrashing like a heavyweight, the rescue chopper was close and two gutsy guys jumped from the chopper to help him.

I say " Gutsy ", for two reasons, one, is obvious, the second was, they had to try to " Control " him. Anyway, back on board, straight to the sick bay and administered several Whiskys, for medicinal purposes, of course.

Up until about 1988, I think and I will stand, corrected, about 10 members of the Club, but one Gentleman from the Royal Navy ended up in an Institution, after it happened to him a second time. I " Tips me Lid " to that Brave Guy.

To me, I salute all Naval Aviators.

I remember a film with a time warp, involving a US Carrier, about Pearl Harbour . The Star of the film was either, Robert Mitcham or Kirk Douglas, and in a TV interview, he said he was taken for a ride off the " Worlds Largest Carrier ", in a two seater jet. However on final approach back to the carrier, he said he was convinced it was the, " Worlds SMALLEST Carrier ".

Makes you wonder how " Gutsy " our guys were operating off , HMAS Sydney and Melbourne.

Cheers,

robroy
