I might be a young spunk compared to some of the tumbunna's here but I know who Bobby is...

Jeannie fell on Easter Sunday morning and Bobby suffered a massive stroke assisting her up. He has been in a coma since.
I spoke to the family last night and Bobby was still hanging in. Life support and nourishment have been removed.

Spoke to the family again tonight. Bobby has not come out of the coma and won't, nor will he be going home again. All the family, Jeannie, Julie and Robin are there and in very good spirits.
They are at Mona Vale Hospital in Sydney.
The consensus of opinion is that his destination are reconsidering his application. With Blackjack and Junior already there, perhaps Bobby is having problems getting in?

Hardly, I should think Torres. I suspect that even in Heaven it takes time to chill the beer and organise a good welcoming party!

A great guy who along with his friend Black Jack Walker most certainly put a bit of character into PNG and Australian aviation over the years.
I recall once in the 'Bird' asking Bobby how the hell could he remember everone's names.( Bobby always greeted everyone like a long lost brother!)
Bobby replied, 'Sharpie, I do not remember their names. I just call everyone HORSE and shake their hand. works wonders.
its forty one years since we met Bobby, a barrel of laughs and many happy memories.

Tinpis, even before the Twin Commanche was the SAAB Safir, VH-RHG, later (and still) VH-BHG. The aircraft is in Victoria last I heard of it. Looks like Bobby bought it around June 1964 and sold it in 1967. It would be a game man who would fly that around the Highlands - normally aspirated, 190 HP Lyc 0-435!
Yup Sharpie. And only yesterday I heard from someone who was a young Secretary at Hawkers when Blackjack was test flying the Canberras and Vampires. Used words like "uncouth" .....

Sadly advise the last flight of Gibbes Sepik Airwars departed at 1.45 pm this afternoon, Bobby in command.
Warning sent to Junior, Blackjack and Bikkies to stand by for a heavy welcoming session.
Please celebrate the life of one of Australia's best, not the utter sadness I now feel for the loss of a great mate.
Funeral arrangements to be announced. I believe Col Pay will read the Eulogy.
Farewell Bobby. It was great fun over the past 40 years!!

Met him twice...once when he was visiting PNG and once in Australia through a family member of all things...one of life's charachters and the world is poorer for their passing. RIP Bobby.

Bamahuta Bob
From all the local PNG aviators, farewell and Bamahuta to to one of the true fathers of aviation in our country.
I never had the honour of meeting this great man although I have read a lot about him, but as a national pilot who has had the pleasure of soaring above the clouds for over 30 years now, I know the debt that PNG aviation owes to those early pioneers.
RIP Bobby Gibbes, Bamahuta and Tenkyu Tru Wantok.

Am I Lapun or, not
As larpun as the Sharp one. 60's Relic,the Chucklng Chimbu and Torres.Having a quiet apinun cleaning out the shed, hoping to get rid of some junk.
Found 2 pela books estop. Apologies to Chimbu C, his spelling of the Pidgin is far better than mind, I claim Larpunitis, left PNG over 33 years ago but still regard the years there as a magic learning curve in aviation!! Tru Tok. The above are more Larpun than I, in fact I think they are, Larpuneons,
Back to the thread, on looking thru the DC-3 Ops. Manual, and Engineering notes, No. 48, Mine, dated 1-11-1966, I found some highly technical Questions.
1. What is meant by stoicheometric mixture
2. What is the most dangerous ( thru fire ) a fuel tank full of kerosene or a fuel tank full of petrol.
( who cares I'm out of here )
3. Which plugs front or rear are fitted to the right magneto
I had a quick look at the old manual, so, I am now,not as larpun as some others.
The mind boggles doesn't it, these points are still valid today, but are overshadowed by, Glass, GPS, Auto Land, etc etc etc . But it still comes back to that Time Immemorial Subject, " AIRMANSHIP "
How about we get back to some real funny stories relating to PNG, personal events etc.

4. Is it work or pleasure to go to bed with the Hostie.
( Obviously PLEASURE, for if it was, WORK, the F/O would have to do it!
1. Burning rich is when the actual Fuel to Air ratio is greater than the stoicheometric Fuel to Air ratio (~14.6:1) , and burning lean is when the actual Fuel to Air ratio is less than the stoicheometric Fuel to Air ratio.
2. The octane rating of kerosene (Vaporising Oil, Power Kerosene, Jet A1 etc) is between 55 and 70. The lower the octane rating the greater susceptibility to burn at normal pressures. Thus kerosene is a greater fire risk than petrol.

( I glad I'm retired, I had to answer questions on this sort of stuff back in the 60's / 70's. The mind boggles at the sort of questions they could think of these days, with, glass, gps,auto land, quickies in blue lagoons, etc,etc.) Actually I remember some of the STUPID, questions I have been asked, whilst on the Boeings, Glass,and etc, just prior to my retirement. How do these Wankers, get there.

The proportion of fuel to air is vitally important and when discussing the subject, there are 3 factors to be considered. They are, power, tempertures, and economy.
The chemically correct fuel/air ratio to obtain complete combustion ( that is, when all the carbon, hydrogen and oxygen are consumed, leaving a residue of water vapour and carbon dioxide) is about 1-15 by weight for average fuels. But there are two features that preclude the use of, " Chemically Correct " mixture.
I think that's enough, but plenty to think about. If you would like me to continue, PM me, either for a personal answer or stick it back out here.
