PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok
Obsucred by Clouds
Just finished watching “ La Vallee” ( or Obscured by Clouds if you are a Pink Floyd fan), very much of its time, early 70’s, and a bit dire, but…who was flying TAL VH-GHS?, and did you ever get a sniff?

Thought that you may be interested in this.
THE GOLDFISH CLUB
The Goldfish Club was founded in 1942 by Mr. C.A. Robertson, Chief Draughtsman of Mssrs. P.B Cow & Co. Ltd, one of the world's largest Air Sea Rescue equipment manufactures. The Club was formed as an exclusive club for Airmen who had survived a wartime aircraft ditching and who owed their lives to the successful use of the Mae West inflatable life preserver, a rubber dinghy, other type life raft. etc. The Goldfish Club Badge shows a white-winged goldfish flying over two symbolic blue waves. The name Goldfish was selected with gold for the value of life and fish for the sea. Each new known member of the Goldfish Club was presented with a heat-sealed waterproof membership card and an embroidered badge with the financial backing of P.B. Cow. Due to wartime regulations, production of wire badges was prohibited and all cloth was severely rationed. These problems were overcome with silk embroidery substituted for wire upon black cloth cut from old evening dress suits that were sent by readers of the London Daily Express after an appeal by columnist William Hickey. Uniform dress regulations prohibited the wearing of the Gold Fish Club Badge on British and American uniforms. The badge was generally worn by Naval aircrews upon their Mae Wests. Many RAF & USAAF Aircrewmen placed their badge under the flap of their left hand uniform pocket.

Port Moresby
I was in POM for one week in November and again February. I must say that the place appears to have deteriorated somewhat with lack of R&M on roads, buildings and whatever. Even the airport terminals automatic glass doors appeared to be on permanent open position with all and sundry wandering each whichever way!
The Dero Club was filled with the usual gang, some under the 'cone of silence' others propping up the bar and or tables.
The yachtie was a thriving throng of humanity especially during Friday's Joker draw that went off while I was there for some K740,000. A very happy female member of long standing and hard working club member took the loot!
Did not get up into the hills, but from all acounts in posguria, the highway has again fallen in disrepair.
Telecom is hopeless with both local and international connections terrible. Only a few years ago the country had the best telecom infrastructure in the pacific basin. If you want a mobile simcard, you buy but then have to wait 3 days before it can be activated. I think that you can get an i-net connection(if the phone works) for around K5000 month (mine in Subic is K62/month for wireless dsl unlimited use.)
But, there did appear to be lots of fairly happy people arround the places that I visited, though crime and corruption is still apparent.
Maybe Ozexpurt can give us a more balanced report on the place providing that he does get out and about under the cover of darkness.
kia ora!

I think Ozex surveys it all from the safety of the Airways Pub. It's a bit like looking at the Lions at an African Watering hole from the balcony of the Lodge.
Hey Sharpie....any truth in the rumour that the dero club armed guards have thier shotguns handcuffed to their wrist to stop them flogging them.??
Coulda done with them at the great dero club robbery..... I might have had one scar less.!! Keep the faith.

I used to have a copy of a video done by Dept of Works, or some such, in the late 70s/early 80s. In those days PNG really did have a world class infrastructure but infrastructure needs more than a splash of paint (and Buai) every 35 years to keep it functioning.
I hear the jungle drums beating out that a certain Waigani Swamp dweller may be returning to the land of the unexpected...CAA FOI Airline Ops

RE: Catepillar Club
Ha!
Good to see you back in the literary field once again.
The following is an extract from Wikipedia and confirms my lapun recollection of both the Goldfish and Catepllar Clubs.
Another 'club' of fame is/was the 'Guinea Pig Club', first president the eminent NZ surgeon, Sir Archibald Macindoe.
Cheers,
Catepillar Club
An early brochure [1] of the Irvin Parachute Company credits William O'Connor 24 August 1920 at McCook Field near Dayton, Ohio as the first person to be saved by an Irvin parachute, but this feat was unrecognised. On 20 October 1922 Lieutenant Harold R. Harris, chief of the McCook Field Flying Station, jumped from a disabled Loening W-2A monoplane fighter. Shortly after, two reporters from the Dayton Herald, realising that there would be more jumps in future, suggested that a club should be formed. 'Caterpillar Club' was suggested because the parachute canopy was made of silk, and because caterpillars have to climb out of their cocoons and fly away. Harris became the first member, and from that time forward any person who jumped from a disabled aircraft with a parachute became a member of the Caterpillar Club.
In 1922 Leslie Irvin agreed to give a gold pin to every person whose life was saved by one of his parachutes. By 1945 the number of members with the Irvin pins had grown to over 34,000. In addition to the Irvin Air Chute Company (now Irvin Aerospace), other parachute manufacturers have also issued caterpillar pins for successful jumps. One of these is Switlik Parachute Company, which though it no longer makes parachutes, still issues pins to people who made their jump long ago and are just now applying for membership.
[edit] Membership requirements
The club has no meetings, officers, or formal organization, but the requirements for membership are rigid – members must have saved their lives by jumping with a parachute. In the early 21st century, only about ten people qualify each year, including military pilots who eject.

I've recently had an enforced holiday from the www-world, thanks to the activities of people who trade in the sale of copper wire. All in al, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The one on top of the hill behind the gateway hotel. drive up a mountain to the carpark, then trek up the mountainous carpark to the entry.
Bobby Gibbes
Just received a phone call from the family. Bobby had a stroke, is in hospital in a coma and all support has been withdrawn.
He is not expected to be with us much longer.
The sad passing of another aviation pioneer, a real character and another of my true friends.
Bye Bobby. I'll miss ya Mate!!!
