Or maybe this just shows that they really should not be attempting to get involved in areas of the business that they don't/can't understand.

And therein lies the problem facing many trades unions in the present day. Large corporations have the ability to hire the best person for the job - as a trades union, you have to elect a member from within your community, and those elected members may be there just because, or prior reputation, for being a good bloke or for just being able to shout louder than the next guy.

In my opinion trades unions are almost at an end - unless the employee group are deemed irreplaceable or are in a fortunate position where their skills are in demand, hence in my opinion, the strength of most pilot unions throughout the world

Of the Worldwide BASSA reps 11 are CSD's, 7 are Pursers and only 1 is Maincrew. Is it any wonder BASSA seeks only to look after the senior ranks at the expense of the rank and file? The people on the lowest salaries and those who can least afford a strike....

Where Next?

I have had enough of this nice red juice to feel confident to make a few foolish predictions.

Press release from BASSA today is full of diversionary bluster. It indicates (yet again), that they are scared to pull the trigger. The idea at the end of their epistle that BA should use this interval to reconsider is pure fantasy.
Soooo...., prediction No1:
BASSA will wait until the 15th. March to call a strike.
(Reasoning - a)This may give the impression that they are being really, really reasonable. b) They DO believe that they ARE being reasonable! c) It gives them a bit of thinking time.
Prediction No. 2:
They will call a couple of shortish strikes (the first shorter than the 2nd) one before Easter and the other after Easter.
(Reasoning - a) They can claim to be honourable - they have kept their word about not striking over Easter.
b) They will be offering WW another "chance" to reflect that they really mean buisiness. And that he will be so impressed by strike No. 1 that he will capitulate before the 2nd! (This is for motivation of the troops.)
c)The shortness of the first strike would be to disguise the fact that it will fail if they have any sort of sustained strike.
Prediction No3:
Even the first short strike will fail. (Ok that was an easy one!)
Reasoning (mine):
A combination of the events at Aer Lingus, the passage of time, the increasing isolation of the CC, (not least from all the other staff groups in BA) and the resolutely reasonable stance of the BA management will cause support for strike action to evaporate.
Finally BA has had plenty of time to make the necessary preparations and they will wisely run a flight programme that they can relatively comfortably achieve with their resources, so that they can say in advance what they will do and then DO IT - thus success!

How about a fourth option?
BASSA allow the 15th March to come and go, re-ballot their members as the strike mandate has run out, get a NO vote because the crew finally realise that WW means business and can then blame the CC community for capitulating.
Face saved. Live to fight another day.

I hope not.

Unfortunately this is the kind of thinking BASSA encourages behind the scenes on their closed forums......In the press today...

Another even urged tearing up the union's pledge not to strike at Easter, saying: 'Ten days over Easter please!!!!! Sod the schoolkids.'

Just to lay my cards on the table. I am 100% against the CC striking. I am an engineer for BA and feel I have done my bit by giving up bonuses and pay rises that amounts to well over £1000.

We unfortunately are all caught up in this sorry affair, we have all given up money and/or conditions. It's a shame certain groups think they are immune.

Unfortunately I believe you will find those sort of dowhackadoo individuals on both sides of the issue. That one unreasoned individual decides to post does not bring much weight into the debate.

Rather like those Americans that disagree with President Obama having to put up with Orly Taitz being on "their side"

Unfortunately, in this situation, you have a Union who reacted far too strongly, FAR too strongly, to a rather reasonable imposition, and then got caught up in the momentum of their own rhetoric.

Unfortunately, the Union's energy is now directed towards not delivering the best result for their members, but saving face and maintaining position in the face of a company that must make savings to survive.

Unite/BASSA keep blinking but, unless BA says "Oh never mind" or offers some face-saving out, they will have to stop hesitating and eventually announce strike dates.

I'm amazed their membership has been as patient as they have been, though rather admiring their ability to gather a group that will agree to anything.

WW in his speech to staff stated, " we WILL NOT reinstate the CC compliments". The guy has stated his reputation on this simple fact. Why do UNITE think he would go back on his word and ruin his hard fought reputation. He WILL NEVER do that. EVER

I can't wait to see the airport ground to a standstill and all those dogooders coming in only to be told to go home again the twists are starting to unfold.
I can't wait to see the troublemakers in BA finally get what they have so noisily asked for. They have bared their arses, in public, and are now going to get them royally kicked. About time too, as the livelihoods of far more people have been put in serious jeopardy by their mindless actions

Talk at work today that BASSA have 10 reps who were involved in the recent negotiations with BA of whom 7 are off sick with stress.
Rather convenient as the strike deadline approaches methinks.. The cynic in me would suggest that they now have a perfect excuse to protect themselves as the cannon fodder goes over the top.

That's exactly how I see it too - it's a bit like the retired crew who are egging them on; they've got nothing to lose

You mention the 1948 agreement, and that staff would have to be redeployed for 52 weeks before they could be made redundant.

Surely that would come under SOSR...........you are changing the employees contract and any encumbrances under it.

Could you explain why not?

As BASSA's own QC admitted in court that BA could vary contract terms by issuing three months notice of change, the 1948 redeployment agreement is hardly relevant. BA can use SOSR and if at a later date this was challenged at an employment tribunal all they would have to do is call Mr Hendy as a witness.
This is a red herring and should be dismissed as an option based on BASSA's position, already stated in front of a judge.
