You have a far bigger set than I do! I was in Tennessee the other day flying in the Blue Ridge Mountains and ended up at 5500 msl and was getting nervous! I guess I'm a true 'flatlander'

When you say that you carry 8 gallons of fuel do you rely on the standard gauge or is there some sort of other trickery involved?

I've been lurking on this thread for some time, the pictures are simply incredible, thank you for sharing them with us. My question, do you have to deal with whiteout/brownout conditions on a regular basis?

hehehehe yaaar I get scared above 500'AGL too :uhoh: best ROC 150' per min. if Your lucky above 20,000' :* our fuel gauge is calibrated & recently checked :8

Thank You for saying :ok: Yep plenty of brown outs here in freshly worked fields, dry Helipads, white outs above 15,000' after fresh snow is common  so a few slow fly pasts to blow off the access powder before touchdown :E
------------------------------------------------------------
Hey nuthin
Yep I recall everything (except what my Wife tells me) :} at 22,200' OAT was -17ºC Tq. 44% T4 738ºC Ng 99% & the ROC was ZERO, hold height speed was 23knots :ouch:

Hi VF, thanks for the wonderful photos and info on the thread. As you say it's a tough life but someone has to live it..........

Just wondering why the Jet Banger is operated into conditions which to a non pilot sound very marginal

at 22,200' OAT was -17ºC Tq. 44% T4 738ºC Ng 99% & the ROC was ZERO, hold height speed was 23knots

Are your AS350's unavailable, too costly or some other reason?

Vertical Freedom
5th Jul 2014, 01:24
Hey DoT
Flying at those low speeds is very common here & a very important speed to know & to keep nailed. The key to that is to ignore the (wrong) concept of attitude = airspeed, this will one day lead to spatial disorientation & wrong inputs. The ASI must only ever be used as the 'stick position' indicator, don't look outside for speed, instead ask yourself - 'what speed do I want?' Now look at the ASI & adjust the stick position accordingly. Never rely on your outside sight picture to adjust speed with mountains, valleys & never ending horizon changes the sight picture is the wrong concept to adjust speed. Rely exclusively & only on the ASI to select the correct stick position :ok: as for the Missus, it's OK she will keep reminding me till it sinks it := I think :*
............................................................ .......................
Hey surely not
Thanks Mate :ok: hmmmmm the camera crew who came ordered a B3 chin mounting plate  of course there is a 350 & 206 - B3 but they wrongly bought the 206 mount. So we were stuck with using the JetBox :ugh: we were going to scrap the project but I said I was keen for the challenge, so we did it; into the Western Khumb up to 22,200' probably a record for the olé Banger :\ yes it was marginal, but so is most flying up here :O

Land Happy always

I believe that less than that speed 23kts or less than translational speed and even at lower altitude you would end-up with LTE (depending on TQ setting)?
At least that's what happened to me at that altitude with a different Bell product though.

Good morning fijdor

Below translational & with a good dose of cross-wind on the Right (only) yes there is LTE risk, but it's more LTA that you have to worry about at above 15,000' for the JetBox :ooh:

Assuming a "perfect" ASI, at 20,000 ft. PA in a standard atmosphere, 23 KIAS would equate to a TAS of about 32 Knots. That's using a rule-of-thumb to estimate; had I an E6B on hand it would no doubt yield a more accurate number.

Good evening to you. My mistake, i used the wrong term to describe the problem. I should have said LTA (lost of tailrotor authority) instead of LTE (lost of tailrotor effectiveness) and yes it is a problem at high density altitude.

Hey arismount
Ouch :D thanks for that
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hey fijdor
I have gotten close to LTA a quite few times in the Jettie around 14,000' to 16,000' on hot days but as I keep the wind around 10 o'clock it has been OK :E
LTE has struck me once (ever) on short final to a Helipad around 15,500' flying into a 15 knot upslope wind, when I over flew a narrow gully where I strong 15+ knot wind was pumping down this gulley from a Glacier above 20,000' as I slowed the strong downslope (gully) cross wind from the Right struck the TR & BANG - total loss of Tail Rotor authority, nose going Right...........I miss diagnosed assuming a tail rotor drive failure, chopped the throttle closed & did a hovering auto to the pad :{ on exit I discovered that the tail rotor drive was still intact, walked to the back of the pad & discovered the roaring down-slope wind & then realized it was LTE :O

Don't want to steal your tread here VF but here is an example of LTA going through 18500 ft lucky to have part of it on video, too bad the operator stopped filming right after it started, it would have been a good souvenir to have the whole thing on video. That wasn't the first LTA I experienced up there.

Hey evil7

Thanks Brother I am in holiday mode for a recharge & FI1 renewals in Australia. Will soon be back :ok:

Yes very sad of the death at Last resort where a Man (experienced around running Helicopters) walked into the Tail Rotor after being instructed by my colleague to stay away, yet he still walked into the spinning TR.

This sadly reinforces the need for Us Pilot's to gaurd the Tail Rotor wherever we land by hanging it out over a ledge wherever possible, or, jumping out immediately upon landing to act as security, guarding the rotatable bits from the unaware, distracted or disorientated general public.

May the departed Rest in Peace & sincere condolences to His Family

Hello VF, have been viewing your pictures for some time now - quite amazing.

Having just read your comments about the tail rotor, can you (or anyone else) say why NOTAR helicopters aren't used more often? Is there a particular performance/economic drawback of NOTAR that prohibits them gaining wider acceptance in the rotary community?

All the best in your 'adventures'.

Greetings from the Amazon!!

I am amazed on how harsh environment you fly... altitude, ****ty weather, mountains, etc..

Here I only get the ****ty weather pretty much :}

How strong is the wind up there around the mountains? Do you get tossed around a lot? Is it hard to keep the "23knots"?

Safe Flying!

why NOTAR helicopters aren't used more often?

They do not do well at altitude.... IN simple terms, they rely on the "Coander Effect", (google is your friend), and are not suited for high altitude.

Those with more knowledge than I, please feel free to correct me.

Great to hear you back on thread. In the pic of your mountain flying brief, along with DA, Met etc. you listed Physiological considerations. Presumably you will need to re-acclimatise yourself when you get back to Nepal to the thinner air all over again.

i.e. getting the o2 flowing sooner than you might have before you left and being watchful for DCS and other signs of hypoxia.

Just curious how you manage this as part of your risk awareness.

Safe flying, and respect, as always.

Thanks Broh, yaar everyone needs acclimatization & everyone needs different amounts of time to adjust. Some never do adjust & end up with altitude sickness or just end up dying :yuk: & some are just lucky & don't get effected by altitude....or me it's easy; I'm one of the lucky ones :E

Report: an AS350B3+ flown by a Junior (recently cleared) Pilot flew to a large Helipad to pick up PAX. The Helipad had 2 drop off ledges where the Tail could have easily been hang off from, hence keeping his Tail Rotor safe from the Public. But the PIC elected to follow the Marshallers directions & landed the Helicopter's TR almost on top of the awaiting PAX. The Marshaller also the Resort Manager realizing how close the TR was to his PAX & the danger they were in, ran back to check on his PAX, forgetting his own safety he ducked under the Horizontal Stabilizer & whilst bent down ran full force into the TR which was at ground idle. He was instantly killed spraying blood, bones & brains all over the PAX & the Pilot, who had realized where the Marshaller was running too, jumped from the machine to try & stop him (but too late).

The machines Tail Rotor Blades where destroyed, the Tail Rotor Gearbox destroyed, Tail Boom cracked requiring replacement, Tail Rotor drive shaft sheared, etc.

Please note; a Marshaller is not a God & the PIC must never, ever just blindly follow his/her directions, certainly observe them & then conduct Your own SWAT checks & risk assessment before landing at the safest possible location. Always (whenever possible) land facing the PAX, the crowd, the gate, the bus, etc. to minimize the risks to the unwary Public. A Marshaller DOES NOT preclude You, nor absolve You of Your duties & responsibilities of Airmanship & Safety to Yourself, to the machine & equally to the Public on the ground.

RIP to the departed Blessed Soul.

Always keep learning :)

Hey Nuthin

Yes it was not an easy post. But I did for our learning & education, for all us Rotorhead Pilot's. It's a serious World out there & anything we can learn from others mistakes could save our own grass :8

No SOP changes as it was right in the first place. If the Pilot does not follow the Ops Manual, SOP, Airmanship, Safety, his Instructor, common scene then no amount of paperwork will prevent this incident. :{

The Pilot has close to 2,000hrs in Helicopters, all dual, I flew about 500hrs with him  goes to show You can only impart so much experience......the Student/CoJo must be ready & willing to absorb that information, but then also One must be willing & capable to apply the same :uhoh: He had more than the CAAN requirements for Solo flight below 10,000' :O

& sometimes we make mistakes that are catastrophic

Thank You for Your kind words. Hmmmmm sadly this the way it is done in Nepal, Rescues are done here with:

1. No Medical Attendant
2. No Crewman
3. No Defibrillator
4. No O2
5. No Stretcher
6. No Support of any kind once departed VNKT
7. little to no info re Patient
8. location coordinates often wrong

I have had 4 Blessed People die in my Helicopter inflight here in Nepal, whilst inbound to the Hospital for the above reasons. Some might say that this method is better than nothing, this is certainly true...........yet, it is however high time for CAAN, Hospitals, Insurance Companies to act on bringing a higher standard of Rescue service to this great country :O

Huge crowd at the footy field, people everywhere, not enough Police to guard my TR so the Best landing I thought create one & right beside the road was this huge drain/erosion block built perfect to keep the Tail clear :ok:

so now I've added another T onto my SWAT checks. Tpeople, Termination spot, Tail (where Ya gonna park it) overhang a ledge wherever & whenever possible, next option away from the gate, PAX, public, bus, car etc.(doesn't eliminate the i factor entirely, but reduces the chance of :ouch:

Are you the only Jet Ranger pilot in Fishtail? I see you more on the Bell than on the Eurocopters.

Comparatively, are Nepali pilots there mostly AS 350 rated only?

Every good loader knows that the rotor babes go in the front seat beside the pilot. You soon get demoted from loadie to chief hanger sweeper if you stuff that one up.

And yes, it is always due to CoG issues.;)

Good evening and Namaste VF

It always wow's me and many others to see such Stark and magnificent views as you have posted in the last three or four re the lake and surrounds, but something struck me and I must ask you ,..

The native Nepalese men , women and children seem to figure well in many flights in your Helis, how do they react at being lifted off and then flown at great heights across their native land,.. are they good pax or do they need a talk before go time, or are they just overawed by the experience of being lifted and flown away. do you ever have a rear compartment person who sits and controls them ?

as ever your employment in that far away land is a wonder to us all, we take for granted many things in our lives, but you out there have to carefully plan and arrange everything before Go time.
my very best regards, Land Safe always.:ok:

Hello Mr Vertical Freedom, a theoretical question from a fellow country man expat who went abroad in search of adventure.........
If I was to find my self in KTM for a couple of days with lacking the supreme fitness to walk up the hills, would it be possible to go for a ride with you, and see and experience these things?
Paid in cash or XXXX or Vic bitter or what ever currency works there of course.
Cheers from a fellow aviation enthusiast

Leading the quiet life here in Oz VF, trawl through 'Top of the world' when I need a fright, like a small child watching a scary movie. People walking into tail rotors & 4 souls departing this life enroute to care in your ride, too full on for me.

But hey noted your lament re YKAT on your August Oz visit. So it's for sale now, some gumen dept asking for 'expressions of interest'. Landed there once, twenty years ago, a one hundred hour wonder, caught out in low cloud I was. Katoomba air strip, my own personal 'Top of the world', that day was full on as well.

Love the shiny white helmet. Only swapped mine for a Bose active noise reduction headset recently because I'm half deaf & need to actually hear ATC. Stay safe, keep rescuing, keep posting.

Fishtail Air Helicopter crashes in Dolpa (http://www.nepalnews.com/index.php/news/40420-fishtail-air-helicopter-crashes-in-dolpa)

A Fishtail Air helicopter on a rescue mission crashed in upper Dolpa on Friday afternoon.
According to a news report by Annapurna Post, the tail rotor of the Eurocopter AS350 B2 (registration number 9N-AKA) struck the surface and caused the incident.
The pilot and a support staff, who sustained minor injuries, were airlifted by a Simrik Air helicopter to Dunai, the headquarters of Dolpa district, the report, adds.

Yaaar the Pilatus Porter flew in, Pilot misjudged the tail-cross-wind & crashed into the lower Helipad at VNLK :yuk: where she sadly remains today, a near brand new airframe being misused as a lean-to :{

Hey P3127
Thanks Mate :O
*******************************************************
Hey RW
Don't know much, so can't say much :8 I have spoken with the concerned Pilot & there are NO injuries as wrongly reported. It was an emergency forced-landing (read elected Auto) due rapidly increasing vibrations & erratic heading changes from the Tail-Rotor :uhoh: which rapidly became frighteningly high........fearing an in-flight airframe failure; the Pilot elected to land in not the best spot causing a TR blade strike during the landing sequence  the cause of the excessive vibration has as yet not been revealed? :(
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Good job  to Capt N ;) Truly a frightening experience :(

Hey VF!
two questions...
what is your minimum amount of Gojuice you are flying (BH 06). Do you have a personal limit?? i hate seeing the backward pump flashing ...so that is my limit
Don´t you have trouble with your fuelpumps in high altitude flights. I had quite offen malfunctions when climbing over 10,000ft.....
greetings from bavaria
and always happy landings
