VFR on top - could be cool - if you know, where you are, the cloudbase gives you plenty of time to react, when dropping out and you know, how, to autorotate through a cloudbase...

@Vertical Freedom

I see the differences between your working environment - and mine.

Where I have an IFR equipped twin engine helicopter with a co pilot, lots of wires "downstairs", which makes low flying underneath the clouds - if vis is bad, a real pain, looking for these f...... wires you know they are there any second now....
you are single pilot in a single engine helicopter with giant mountains around and a density altitude, which I can imagine, makes autorotation a little more demanding then doing it more or less sea level....

So for me going VFR on top (or IFR) is a reliev, while for you it brings up this gut feeling and a higher workload.

Still, cool working place ;-)

its a good flight up there, the first time I done that flight I was sure we were going to get into trouble for low flying, haven't done it too many times but always seems very low in a built up area going over the end of the harbour bridge. looks like you had a good day for it

Hey VF was that harbour bridge visit on Saturday afternoon? Sitting watching my daughter's cricket match at Waverton Park (just off to the left of your picture) I noticed a Bell looping around - a bit different from the usual R44s - and thought to myself 'I wonder if that's VF?' :8

You must have gotten the only non-rain days in Sydney for the last little while !

EXY - owned by a very nice chap who also has a 407. It's a nice machine and well looked after by Billy and his boys at BK Helis.

I look at your pics, with great flying, amazing scenery, happy wife (happy life) and simply wonder what would possess you to want to come back to boring old Australia !

Hey 22clipper.....Mate the Nepali Aviation Safety record is the WORST by far in the World; 38 fatal crashes this century :mad: CAAN is not interested in promoting/enforcing safety just bribery & corruption to look the other way & party-on is their SOP :ugh: The last 2 most recent was a 270 hour old new Twin Otter with full IFR panel, radalt etc etc etc but only permitted to fly DayVFR punched into cloud & slammed into a Mountain killing all on board. The other was an 750XL had a engine failure, Pilot's didn't feather the prop & slammed into a perfect field for a landing killing the PIC, the CoJo was fatally injured was begging for help for 3 hours before CAAN dispatched a Helicopter for a look without a Doctor on-board, news was on google 15mins after the forced landing but CAAN was sleeping at the wheel (again/as usual) :uhoh:

It seems only the contracted seasonal drop ins do rescues worthy of mention in Nepal :ooh: my 1,289 rescues don't count, 54 above 21,000' don't count :ugh: Capt SG a Nepali has done over 2,000 rescues also don't count :( Capt MF Italian has done 25 rescues another contracted for the season drop in, is also splashed all over the global media for his few efforts :eek: praise be the skewed one eyed media :yuk:

Hey krypton_john Nepal certainly needs more talented Pilot's like Capt Jason, He can do what most local Pilot's cannot :confused:

Nepali aviation is undoubtedly the most unsafe in the World with a corrupt authority that does nothing but take black money to look the other way. Maintenance that barely exists, doing the barest minimum to get by. No training being conducted in any fixed or rotory companies, except Simrik being the only company in Nepal attempted to conduct some training :suspect:

I do appreciate your "TR Safe" policy. But isn't there a risk of falling, or particular with snow, of sliding backwards at the slightest AFT slope?

It has happened to others (see here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbUEUoyU2eQ)). But with the tail hanging over the cliff, in your case the result would be much more dramatic. How do you ensure, before idling throttle, that your helicopter can't slide back?

To reply to Your question on machine positioning safety....in Kindergarten flight training school I was taught to do a very thorough security check each & every landing off an airport or a solid H, including slope landings :8
This means whenever the ground is uncertain (read every-time); the PIC must, repeat MUST perform a security/stability check; after a suitable landing pad is selected & landed on still maintaining 100% Nr (obviously no steep down-slopes) You give a good positive dance on the Pedals whilst giving the Cyclic a damn good stir to prove the ground is stable, being at the ready to relaunch if she begins to fall over/slip, do this before bringing the Nr back to idle :eek:
The complete 'dimwit' on the clip posted did none of the above, zip, zilch, along with landing on a down-slope & immediately shutting down??? WTF was this clown thinking??? Luckily he didn't kill anyone :mad:
If Your Instructor didn't teach these baby-basics; it's concerning what other critical key points did he/she miss teaching???? :\
After over 8,000 high altitude Mountain landings this technique works perfectly every-time, provided these basics are followed. I can assure You it has saved quiet a few not so bright Folks from being minced by the Tail-Rotor :eek: & never has the machine fallen/slipped over :*

G'day whoknows idont.....since the past 5.5 years that I was flying in Nepal there's been 3 Blessed Souls killed by walking into the TR, 2 of those would have been avoided simply by hanging the TR off the ledge that was there := & there's been countless near-misses, but most don't bother thinking it's too hard :yuk:

VF,

A real "mans" helicopter - no plastic. It should be an SA315B - before the days of AS. Still holds the world altitude record 12,442 m in 1972!!

I think Switzerland ( ~ 20 still registered) and India are the last bastion of the Lama.

Look out for the Cheetal with the "fat" engine. Hopefully they get it up and running.

Hi RVDT.............thanks for Your inputs & picture :cool: I believe the highest ever for a Helicopter was flown by Fred North in a B2 to 42,500' (12,879m) :eek: my highest flown was a mere 28,500' (8,636m) in a B3+ :8

I reckon it is better in the hover than the 350 - but as you know I have about 30 minutes in one and 2 hours in the other. I was told the cross-section of the tailboom was modified but I have not verified.

I noticed some articles in the news in the last couple of days suggesting Sherpas are worried that frequent (unauthorised) tourist flights above everest base camp are creating an avalanche danger from the noise & vibration. How busy is it up there? Are you going to need some ATC around the mountain?

Hey Peter 3127....with that massive sail (fin) hover stability is a challenge. It is no match for a B3 in the Mountains, at sea-level WoW :} (sorry missed Your post earlier) :{ yep the T2 has a had a few mods to reinforce known weaknesses of the boom :D

G'day Non-PC Plod.....nothing surprises me about Nepal :suspect: as I'm not there I can't give an accurate comment, however from a Mate flying there now; no flights into the Western Khumb (Everest above BC) are flown without prior permission :confused: as for ATC...they are of little use in KTM so can't see them helping much up there....it's all uncontrolled air space, so Pilot's simply talk to each other for separation :ok: Avalanche risk from Helicopters :rolleyes: (nonsense) :uhoh:
