VF, love your photgraphs.

The other night I was looking at some photographs I took of VNLK in the early 1970's when it was a doosie of a dirt airstrip originally packed down by foot and with few buildings around it. The transformation is "awesome" but having trekked through that country how did they get the bitumen in? Lots of porters (on foot) me thinks but do you know if they had machinery to lay the surface.

Seeing your picture of the "bird" at Kalaphatar, EBC and above sort of makes you realise how quickly things have changed up the valleys. When we were there it was mainly Chinese reconisance aircraft flying over some of the valleys/border.

Keep the pictures coming. :ok:

I wore my Fishtail Air T-shirt to the shops today. I was walking out of the supermarket and a guys comes up to me and says "I flew with Fishtail Air" ... Apparently it was some bloke called "Steve" (likely not his real name ... ;) )

And be nice to the dog. They spend their lives smiling at us. :-)

Absolutely correct.......:O but over these parts they don't like to sling := + distances are often long 15-25mins one way, would be quiet a bit longer on the hook :*

I guess Canada has a slinging culture then. Next time say you can put it in the tool shed for them with a longline (small bit of pendulum effect and timing you can get it in a door way)
33 miles is not that far to sling stuff here. We have mobed in drills (30 loads +)
over 40 miles from the nearest airstrip and the airstrip was a further 1 hr flight from the nearest road.

Cheers

fijdor
3rd Dec 2014, 19:48
Actually, it would have been faster and easier to longline it to your destination, that kind of a load would have flown perfectly at 80kts and been a lot safer, easier on the aircraft and your back as well.

Nothing wrong with it though, just different places, different ways of doing things.

8th Dec 2014, 06:31
Jd...why sling't? Just to the left of the fuselage, there's some nice wire to stich the wings back on with. Sufficient speed-tape to cover the holes, her'n there. Perhaps a new windscreen, gojuice to fit.....viola, jello KTM!
PS: there could be a issue with the propellar as well. No big problem, there's probly one hanging

Looks like all the operators in Nepal are switching to AS350 completely. Manang was MI operator and so was Shree. What happened to the two BK117 owned by Simrik?

Also, what is that Robbie doing up there alone in the cold besides sightseen in VNPK? Honestly, what kind of work does the Robinson do in that altitude?:\

Namaste VF,

Your are caught on film.
You are probably caught more often but this was the first time i saw you on Dutch television.
On Boxing day there was a documentary about some Dutch climbers trying to conquer the Cho Oyu.
As a side step about the dangers to which also the sherpas are exposed there was a clipping from ABC news about the 12 sherpas who died 18 April.
This clipping starts from about 6:00 and features a shot with VF in the 350.

This is the online link. I do not know if you can view this from outside Holland.
(I often cannot open links to BBC online, so there might be a limitation on this as well)

Good day Steven Dai

Congratulations on making in the news about your photography and all the best for the upcoming photo book that will include all the wonderful pictures that you have shared with us on the forum.:D

I knew that someday you would be noticed by the media for your wonderful work of sharing the pictures and your contribution towards making Nepal known to the world. You have done more work advertising Nepal through your pictures than what NTB (Nepal Tourism Board) has. Thank you for sharing your world with us. By the way, did you switch to Manang Air, as that is what the article says?

For interested folks, here is the link to the news article. The news is in Nepali but there are some wonderful pictures that we have not seen on this thread.

Pedal buzz was there for a loooooooooog time :ugh:(which wouldn't balance out) CE refused to acknowledge a problem till the crack reared it's frighteningly ugly head & tore 13' around the boom  hence I was not flying it for long time. An almost catastrophic disaster forced them to replace the boom & TR blade linkages :D

Hi Steve,
I am relieved you are not flying that heap of trashcan material, for if in developing that size of crack what else nearer to the Donk has also been subject to similar oscillations but possibly accelerated due to the length of the arm inducing neg/pos stress
Almost suicidal maintenance...or should I say "Lack of knowledge on spinning machinery will create cracks" that denotes failure, that denotes death if flown.
CE should be the one to test fly.....:ugh:

VF - Old CE here, I thought it was customary (ie good practice) to fit T/R pitch links in pairs? And, of course, by the right P/N from the IPC, supplied by the OEM. And the other pointer that something is amiss is the Vibrex or 8500 imbalance issue. The technology NEVER lies; sometimes a little obscure, but you have to believe it and/or call or e-m the OEM. (Bell are one of the best at such matters, their database of 'sniggles' that don't respond to standard maintenance is legendary). And it's free too.

Well, thank goodness the aircraft was robust enough and did not fail in flight. Some lessons learned, I hope. Best - VFR

VF, how did the "wrong" pitch link get into the Fishtail procurement system? I understand you only fly one variant of JetRanger so how did someone get a wrong part number to order, or did the supplier get it wrong? If you've got a bogus part please let us know the details, supplier etc. so that others don't get caught out. Incredible that a "Chief Engineer" could ignore such a massive high frequency vibration for so long. Can I submit my resume?

Gidday VF, quite a few of the communities in your photos look like they rely heavily on growing there own food etc to survive, & accessing them using land transport would be very difficult. Helicopters aren't cheap to run, are the rescues/hospital transfers etc paid for by government departments, community funds or individuals?

Hey Heliduck

Yep, land transport is often by foot or horse or buffalo  All local people rescues are self funded ONLY, plus they have to pay first before we mobilize, as too many have skimped paying when their relative dies whilst we are inbound, or they never really had the cash; so now it's pay first or it's a no go :=

Yes now with Manang :ok: the market here is ferociously competitive, hence why some don't do proper maintenance, but hopefully those guys will fall over soon & then we can have a market price correction :ouch:

Peter-RB

Namaste Steve,

That Puma certainly threw a shed load of debris around,

just a question for you regarding landing on a shelf like you are in the last pic, I have only ever landed where the land around the machine is flat or nearly flat but constant in profile for the range of small helis I have landed, if near to a drop away when settling down say at about 20 ft and down do you need to offer any rotor tipping to counter the way the downdraft will be being lost down the slope of incline of such drop offs.

or do you just fly in gauging an almost greased on landing...?

Many regards
