Tis indeedly an awesome place to fly (albeit very seriously challenging) & live :)
---------------------------------------------------

G'day nuthin

Your right Brother, to achieve the lifts here often to fly back to my fuel stash can be 8-10mins away so often landing with 7 or 8usgals which at these ultra high altitudes is your 20 mins  except when doing Rescues above 20,000' then I am landing with 35-40litres on gauge on the AS350B3+ which is about 12-15mins, but You gotta do that or You won't pick up the Patient :ooh: You need that eXtra leverage :=

Happy Landings :ok:

Nil HIGE!! Yep that's on the edge for an ATO and I can't say I don't or haven't employed the same method at altitude, but what you have here is a committed landing with no options, something that you don't do if you are flying a twin as if you fly it like a single then you may as well be in a single. This is part of the shift in culture that all single drivers have a problem with when they get the chance at a medium twin such as a 212. Anyway I know it's a Jetty but the no option thing is not a good culture to be in for any type of flying.

Cheers mate

Here in the extremes we have; it is nice to plan HIGE & we do, but then the conditions change when You get there & You have HOGE on arrival :ok: but then next time again the conditions change so much that your so far less than HIGE You gotta drop something off down the valley :bored: So basically this is no environment for those lacking in experience & not knowing their machine :( There are NO twins that will work at these ultra high altitudes & DA's so singles are it....in fact only 1 at super high altitudes the AS350B3 := As for plan B go-around options  hmmmmm try going into the Western Khumb a dead end valley with 27,000' to 29,000' mountains surrounding You on 3 sides, it's one way in & the same way out with no go-around options & no HIGE landings around 23,000'+ every time  done only to save a Life ;)

VF,

Two things.

a) you know that every heli pilot that looks at your pics wants to be doing YOUR flying ! (OK, maybe not all, but certainly me).

b) I am coming to your neck of the woods late this year...and I will be in touch so you can take me flying (and, yep, I'll pay + beers !).

All the best,

VF,

You have an amazing view of the world and living where you do would be a great eye opener, I have spent 30 years (on / off) working in Asia and love it.

As I said a (long) time ago...you should publish your pics and the stories for the world to see. A best seller !

Arrrj

PS - I have a mate who just started doing twins, and he say he loves it, but I don't think so...he used to fly 350's in "challenging conditions".

VF, re nail files, guts for garters etc, us engine blokes always carried our "Riffler Files" to blend slight dents & abrasions, but for deeper damage & as a "get you home" for the man in the RH seat a nail file often worked wonders, there must be stories on here about what we did that experience & 20 years of engineering taught us that got the job done to get the rotating mass airborne & home ! often a case of needs must within the parameters of safety and being an engineer in the old (good) days before all this yellow jacket & risk assessment stuff came in, PH (an ex helicopter engine fitter & engineer).

zetec2
5th Apr 2014, 16:09
As an addition, if there is any helicopter engine fitter / engineer out there that doesn't have a Riffler File in their toolkit I am quite willing to pass mine on as I am now a happily retired ex helicopter/gas turbine engineer & my uses for said item are absolutely minimal (no good even for smoothing nails in leiu of a nail file !), regards, Paul H.

I don't know how I had never looked at this thread until last week. Then it became like the great compelling book that you just can't put down. Please, don't stop "wasting" my time!

Namaste VF ,

I have been meaning to ask you for some time now, what does Sagarmatha mean in Nepalese,

we low country folk simple know it as Mt Everest which always tells us the Highest in the World some say K2 is higher, having never stood on either I cannot make any informed comment.

Stay safe my friend.

Brother - Sagarmatha has a few meanings - 'forehead of the Sky & Sea' & 'the Mother of the Universe'

It is claimed that K2 is the second highest place on our Planet at 28,211' & our Sagarmatha (Everest) is 29,035' (corrected) :ooh: hmmmm but I have not measured either, have flown up around Sagarmatha to 28,800' (top of climb, she ran out of puff) with 9 cameras filming & 1 Producer/Camera man on-board

Some amazing pictures in this thread...showing great skill at work.

But I find this statement a bit rich for a guy that has his own PPRUNE thread dedicated to massaging his ego:

"Thanks Brother. Yaar gold bars, stripes & BS don't make You a better Pilot, that stuff is for EGO massage ONLY."

Not taking away from his skills..but maybe step off the soapbox a little.

I fly in a white shirt, silver bars and at times a tie...even polished shoes. I'm not stroking my ego...I'm following company guidelines. If the shirt and bars is the price I need to pay to fly close to home...then so be it.

Namaste VF

You've been off freq for a long time VF and I hope that all is well and that you can give everyone an "ops normal" call soon.

I hope that you and the missus are having a holiday somewhere nice and there is nothing more sinister for your silence. I (and I am sure that many other PPRuNeRs) wish you well.:ok:

Happy landings.....

Hey VF, wanna shed some light on how you leave those machines running?
I guess you don't shut down cause you cannot afford risk of not starting at those altitudes... (especially seeing those rather high temperatures)
Is it full, idle, servo on, off, force trim, ties, locks, duct tape,...?
If it's too much hustle just forget about it and keep posting the best pics on this side of forum...

Thanx

Yep it's written in our Ops. VF - as always thank you for all your contributions to this thread.

It does however make be feel a little uneasy to see you flying a single engine Jetbox over a very deep lake with sheer sides and with no chance of an auto to dry land :}:}:}

I appreciate alternative routing may be impossible but it must be uncomfortable without floats/dinghy/LSJ especially when the water is likely to be close to freezing.

How do you assess the risks?

Hey Madbob
over water flights such as this awesome lake is less than 0.01% of total flying time  so I fly higher for greater auto range & chant a Mantra :)

I can ask Doug Makkonen for you. He definitely filmed in a Jetbox setup the way you asked.
Differences would be C20R (small difference:O) and maybe a whole lot of fuel as the St Elias can get very remote.
Altitudes would be no higher than 20000 so they could get Mt Logan and and temps would be a lot lower than Nepal except for winter time perhaps.

From memory the camera setup weighed 400 lbs . Most of that was counter weight for the camera and a back seat full of gear.

My guess is 20000' but I will get back to you.

And 20000' for a limit ain't gonna get much where you work

Hello nuthin
Thanks Broh, yaaar here 20,000' is the valley floor in many places, like the Khumb :ouch: a stripped down ultra light Jettie with a C20R or a Kiwi enhanced C20BorJ could open up most base camps in this country around 18-19,000' :=

I would love to visit the town of Lukla, spend a few weeks there, take in the atmosphere and get to know the people.

I imagine that it is a very safe and friendly place with no crime and I assume that the people there are fairly wealthy by Nepalese standards.

VF,

You have the hardest working jetty in the world…no doubt the one that flies the highest too !

Stay safe, so you can take me flying when I come to buy you a few beers.

I always thought your company name was a reference to the fish tail shape of the helicopter fin.
In the book "By Compass and Consolan" mention is made of the majestic Macchapucchare, the fish tailed mountain.
Suddenly that company logo on the choppers make far more sense than it did before.

Some of these photos are breathtaking, and the work you do is humbling. I look into this thread from time to time, it brings back many fond memories of my visits to Nepal and particularly the trek we did of part of the Anapurna circuit.

Thank you.

VF - I can see in many of your photos that you tend to position the helicopter at the back of a helipad/landing site with the TR overhanging a downslope. I am guessing that this is the best way to keep it away from over-enthusiastic locals at uncontrolled/ an-hoc landing sites?

You may also note that our VF is rather particular about landing with skids aligned to something!

KJ

Your post beat me to it. VF is very precise about where he lands, always, it's a discipline I admire in every pilot, especially when I'm travelling as a pax!

VF - I'd be happy to be flown by you any day.:ok:

MB

PS - KJ see post #579 on page 29 for further proof of VF's flying skills - real kudos to the man!

Love this thread VF. You have a beautiful and challenging environment in which to live and work.

As an interested spectator I have a question. How do you calculate passenger weights?

John

Many thanks Brother :p
========================
Hey krypton_john
yes it REALLY was :E

Namaste LongJohn54
the take off weight calculator is the collective :ooh: You look outside, ask Yourself what power margin I need to safely escape from this location ie: towering (HOGE), normal, cushion creep, running etc. :confused: then pull up on collective & look inside, check the power margin (if any) & then decide to go, or dump something first :{ at remote locations; we do not have weighing scales, manifests etc. it's all up to the PIC to decide :}

Entering into the 'Kumbh' of Sagarmatha is a dead end tomb, into the 'dead zone' where Your body begins to slowly die.
