What's the highest you have been able to land the JetFranger?

Is it fitted with the composite tail rotor?

Vertical Freedom
21st Apr 2013, 05:10
Hey AC

Highest in a JetBanger was 17,440' but it was 16C so was t4'd out & could not pick the Patient, so the Sherpa Guides carried him down to a lower pinnacle at 16,400' whilst I waited at base-camp. From where I could dive off to escape with him :8

Not the composite tail-rotor blades hmmmm that would be good, there good on the 47 :ok:

Over 17,000' - I am impressed. You must have a delicate touch on the pedals.

Best i ever got in a chopper was 17000' in a Huey in PNG, and the speed range was 30kt fall from the sky to 60kt Vne. We were never allowed to attempt a landing above 10,000'.

It's the dry season. Check it out again in the monsoon season! Those huge glaciers provide a clue. The constant winds prevent massive drifting at very high altitudes.

Yep as Nepal is so close to the Equator we are a very hot climate. The permanent snow lines starts only around 20,000' :=

Also we get some pretty BIG winds up there often over 100knots even 200knots at times so yep that will blow off a good percentage of snow

The last few images where taken from 28,000'amsl :oh:

As always EXCELLENT pictures.:ok: Thank you for taking us on this virtual tour of Shangrila. I enjoyed it tremendously.:)

On a different note, what are your thoughts of CAAN allowing FW pilots to fly only one type of aircraft after the Sita Air incident? In your opinion, do you think CAAN will try to implement the same rule for RW pilots? If they do, how will that affect the pilots in Nepal? I know the majority of helicopters are AS350 variations but some companies:E have mixed fleet of AS350 with BK 117 and Bell206.

From this batch of photos, http://www.pprune.org/7802881-post1007.html is my favorite of all

Good morning GCP

Thanks for Your positive comments :D

CAAN is following EASA wanting to have single types only??? In my opinion - complete bureaucratic nonsense :ugh:

Hey CD

Thanks for joioning. My minimum is what ever works??? For cruising doesn't matter, but for landing.... so long as I can stabilise an apporach; any wind speed is OK, so long the approach is manageable ;)

Happy Landings

Dear VF...these pics are of YOU rescuing ME!! I was with Peak Freaks climbing Island Peak....when I unfortunately had a small uneventful fall in the snow. It wasn't much of a fall...but enough to break my ankle in TWO places..( each side of my ankle)....I had plastic boots on that were somewhat to big...which I think was a contributing factor! :{

I'm home now and recovering well...and will be back to IP to try again in 2014!

I wanted to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for saving my life and for risking your's in getting up there to evacuate me!!

Warmest Regards and Namate

Hi again!! This picture is Dr. Murad Lala...a specialist from India who was on the rope ahead of me as we were climbing Island Peak...an amazing and comforting person...who stayed with me until I heard the swirling helicopter blades and felt the wind ice crystals on my face and knew I was going to get out of there!! He wanted to come down with me...as he had been taking great care of me while up there. As I am speaking.....he is back in the Khumbu....climbing Mt. Everest....up at Camp 2 now..

I think Fishtail is the only company that operates the Bell206 at that altitudes. The altitudes reached by this helicopter are unbelivable. The performances of 206 are unappreciated/underrated by a lot of people, but I see that in hands of certain pilots this helicopter is still one of the greatest helicopters in the world.:D

Namaste MountainGirl1957 - Deborah

Thank You so much for Your very kind positive words :O

It was my pleasure, duty & honour to be there to Rescue You from Island Peak just below the summit 19,985' (landing height)

Conditions that day looked fantastic but it was extremely turbulent Jet Streams blowing, gusts up to 60knots & blowing around 45knots, Clear Air Turbulence CAT, hence after testing the winds so to speak, 3 missed approaches later there was no chance of a successful landing & take-off. So I requested to have You moved to another location which had a more into wind approach profile, from where I could safely Rescue You

Sadly due to performance limitations & extreme conditions I had to deny Your Doctor coming with us :(

I hope You are fully recovered now & look forward to meeting with You in Nepal again soon :ok:

Om Blessings :)

Yours words on the 3 x missed approaches under such tight conditions, I hope will be well recieved by the many PPL pilots who are tuned into your consistant stream of valuable pics (No1) and such comments(No2), that even a high Alt rescue takes second place to you finding the right wind and area to land in,...I hope many read and absorb this post of yours.

Now I know why you have no LTE issues with the Jet Box: secret, warped, high-altitude tail rotor blades, as seen in the picture above :eek: :}

Hey Encyclo

hehehehe Mate no LTE, judicious use of wind with carefully planned approaches. For a US machine, wind; Best around 10o'clock, French 2 :\

 LTE is real := especially for a JetBox

:ouch: experinced LTE once, not fun; I did not take into account the potential for a strong downslope wind from a small gully just in front/below my Helipad 13,307'. Approaching from up the main Valley into a steady 17 knots upslope. 150 meters to go, then BANG nose going fast right, me full left pedal? machines continues to yaw right, so I? Ass umed - TR drive failure, rolled off throttle to straighten on a hovering auto? Shut down, exit to find machine perfect? the ridge line Helipad I'm standing on there's a steady 15knots upslope? Hmmmmm, walk back to the edge of the pad & BANG, I'm hit by a freezing cold 15knots going straight down @ 90degrees to the prevailing wind & Valley, just there above the pad? Hmmmmm then I thinks? my TR went to VR state (LTE) from the wrong R sided cross-wind.... I lost TR authority :} :( I was already over the pad with almost no ground speed, so elected against a GoAround?

:OWe Live - We Learn:O

Cheers & thanks

It doesn't look so dusty where you fly. Normally evident from blade leading edges. Have you considered getting rid of your particle separator?

A lot of of 206's in PNG were without them.

VF, if your boss plans on keeping the 206 for awhile you must persuade them to convert the C20J to a C20R. If it's needed anywhere, it is in your helicopter! Contact Soloy ([email protected]) who owns the STC they will help you with the little adapter kit that covers the installation. You will be very happy with the increased TOT margins at the altitudes where you live and work.
Your photos and commentaries have made you very valuable to lot of your friends and colleagues around the world.

Simone Moro in highest ever Everest helicopter rescue of stricken climber (http://www.grough.co.uk/magazine/2013/05/22/simone-moro-in-highest-ever-everest-helicopter-of-stricken-climber)

http://www.grough.co.uk/lib/img/editorial/simonemorohelicopterrescue01.jpg

One of the men involved in the recent ugly confrontation on Everest between three European mountaineers and Sherpas has carried out a daring helicopter rescue of a stricken climber.

Italian climber Simone Moro flew his aircraft to a record-breaking 7,800m to airlift the Nepali-Canadian casualty from Everest’s South Col yesterday.

It was the highest ever rescue by helicopter.

The rotary-wing aircraft struggle to gain uplift in the thin air at such altitudes, but Moro piloted his machine higher than any previous flight so the injured climber could be brought to safety.

The rescue was witnessed by David Hamilton, an expedition leader from Sheffield-based Jagged Globe.

He said: “An injured Nepali-Canadian climber was lifted on a long-line from 7,800m on Everest at 1.30pm Nepali time on 21 May.

“The climber got into difficulties in the afternoon of 20 May high on Everest.

“A Sherpa team led by Pasang Tenzing, who was working for Jagged Globe, rescued the injured climber from above 8,500m in the evening reaching the South Col Camp at 7,950m at 8pm.

“On 21 May they lowered him over several hundred metres of difficult ground to reach a spot from where the record-breaking helicopter pick-up was possible.

“The pilot was Simone Moro.”

Mr Moro was with British climber and photographer Jon Griffith and Swiss speed-climbing expert Ueli Steck last month when they were confronted by a group of angry Sherpas who took exception to their Alpine-style climbing in an area where the Sherpas were fixing ropes.

The European climbers said their lives were threatened and they had to make a dangerous escape from Everest Camp Two back down to Base Camp.

Griffith and Steck flew out of the area after their expedition was abandoned, but Moro remained in the Everest area.

On the picture, it looks like Fishtail B3!

Nepal protests at Everest video call by climber Hughes

Nepal's tourism ministry has demanded to know why a British climber made a video call from the summit of Mount Everest without permission.

Daniel Hughes reached the top of the world's highest peak on 19 May, and spoke live to BBC News from there using his smartphone.

Nepalese officials have summoned his expedition leader, David Hamilton, to be questioned by a committee.

An official said Mr Hughes had broken the rules on broadcasting.

Dipendra Poudel from the mountain section of Nepal's Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Aviation told the BBC: "The mountaineering rules say if you want to make a live telecast from the mountain, which is a restricted area, you have to get a permit first and inform us early about what you're going to do.

Analysis

Joanna Jolly
BBC South Asia analyst and former Nepal correspondent
The problem is the rules and regulations regarding broadcasting in Nepal haven't caught up with developments in technology.

In the past, if you were a film crew making a commercial film, this would be clear from the amount of equipment you had with you. All film crews are required to pay for a filming permit and also inform the government of their activities.

Now many people, like Daniel Hughes, are filming short video clips and posting them to personal websites. They're also making video calls on smart phones. The question is whether this also qualifies as commercial broadcasting, and where do you draw the line.

The Nepali government were no doubt embarrassed that Daniel Hughes made the first ever live video broadcast from the top of Mount Everest without their knowledge.

It seems the laws will have to be rewritten to keep up with the advancements in technology.

"It costs around $2,000 (£1,324) to get this permit."

Ministry officials said mountaineers found guilty of violating Nepal's tourism laws could be banned from obtaining climbing permits for 10 years or banned from entering the country for five years.

Mr Hughes, who has now left Nepal, aimed to raise £1m ($1.6m) for the British charity Comic Relief by climbing Mount Everest and carrying out what he said would be the world's first video call from the summit.

During the call the climber wore an oxygen mask as well as a red nose, which is the Comic Relief symbol.

'Grey' rules
The expedition leader told the BBC that he was trying to reach an amicable settlement with the ministry. Mr Hamilton said he had been operating in Nepal for the past 20 years without infringing local laws and sensibilities.

"If we realised this filming was going to be an issue, we would have tried to head it off at the beginning.

"As far as we see it, the rules are a little bit grey about shooting short video clips and putting them on websites."

The BBC's former Nepal correspondent, Joanna Jolly, says the incident demonstrates that the country's broadcasting regulations have not kept up with technological progress.

May is the most popular month for climbing Everest due to favourable weather, and the past weeks have seen several firsts on the world's highest mountain.

They include a record 11th ascent by a British mountaineer, the first by a Saudi woman and the ascent of the oldest person yet to conquer the peak, 80-year-old Yuichiro Miura, from Japan.

Replace the # sign in the above URL with a g and you'll get to the page.

This is the blog of Fishtail Air that I have been following for some time. It is updated periodically and is a good source of news and updates about the company.

Fishtail Air Pvt. Ltd. (http://fishtailair.com/blog/)

VF must have been busy with all the workload due to SAR because of the monsoon season as well as because of the added work as one of their helicopters crashed recently.

Namaste Ye ole Pilot

It's the normal Rotorheads flying life here (80% of the year) doing; the crap weather, real limited power!!! ISA+30DA, contour map reading in the rivers, connecting the right junctions to get to Your destination can be tricky, low level in-the river navigation, dodging weather, wires? fuel errr taking all your return fuel to dump somewhere so You can arrive on your pad low on fuel & just light enough to pull a Patient off a 23,000' ledge with sometimes way less than hover power; using extreme limited power techniques to fall off & GO  yep it's challenging to say the least :ooh: not for everyone, nor the faint hearted :} none the less it's still just another Helicopter flying job :ouch:

Helicopter Rescue dependance & use is very much a growing industry, giving greater safety options for the intrepid Trekkers, Mountaineers & the Villagers.......not to mention aiding the very Sherpa's that risk their lives for their clients in this extreme & tough environment :)

Many Thanks for Your Blessings

Check every RFM of all machines.. nothing delivers hot & ultra high performance like the 350B3,B3+,Be do.... NOTHING. She can HOGE at 10,000' ISA at MTOW.. :D :D :D

Given favorable conditions, she can land at 23,K+' & still have sufficient power to take off with 1 injured Man!!!:eek::eek:

Her performance is amazing to say the least. Even a 407 does not come within a KooooWeee of the 350B3 range :uhoh: at sea level well......then there's so many other options

The 407HP may be a contender in the near future but it will be hard to beat the B3 for operating costs and performance.

407HP hmmm lets see, but then there's still that stupid tub floor, high lip to step over getting in, teeny weeny punsy cargo locker when the Aux. tank is in, no side lockers.
