Looks like you're back where you love. Quick question. Are these all old pics or are you back with Fishtail? Just curious.

Great photos, VF. Is that a bull bar on the front, or do you use it as a clothesline to dry out your spare underwear?

Anyway, from a now grounded old helicopter pilot, I have noticed an advertisement on Discovery Channel where 9N-AKF makes a landing to drop off some adventurer. Are you a film star as well? Take care up there!

G'day Carbon Uggbootprint (softer & warmer)..............Yes Mate, I've witnessed 2 People walking into the Tail Rotor (engine running, not my machine) & know of 6 others All killed & all in the Himalayas :{ totally hideous, especially when 7 of those killed; the Pilot could have saved the day by protecting the Tail-Rotor by hanging over a ledge.....:(.............So Do the Right Thing, consider very much what You do with Your TR when landing :ok: Yes You say shut down - but someone can walk through the TR during shut-down/start-up, protect it whenever the opportunity is there to guard it!!! :ok:

Yar I was suspect at first for a while too, but; A the donk has a damn good fuel filters & B we use a special funnel which has a water & particle separator built into the body of the stainless funnel so the crap is filtered out...never been a problem thus far, so must work :ooh:

"Feminine shoots"! Would be interesting to drag up some old photos of the Lukla airstrip being "constructed" as I recall if was both male and female sherpas from the Namche/Khunde/Khumjung area involved in packing, rather stamping, the dirt of the runway. It was dirt when I flew out of it in early 1974 complete with broken aircraft at the top and bottom of the runway. Changed somewhat since then.

The series gives an amazing insight to high altitude flying but its typical Foxtel or National geographic sensationalism with similar rhetoric to other aviation programs they cover.

Apart from the rubbish its very entertaining and the scenery is just wow!....and gives me a better appreciation for where my buddy works.:ok:

Dear Vertical Freedom,

You definitely put the WOW in your pilotage and photographic skills! I garnered four hours of PIC time in an Evergreen Bell 206 Long Ranger way back in 1978. (I had accumulated 760 hours in Cessna 152's, 172's, 185's, and 320's at the time.) I could hover, barely...

One Sunday my friend/instructor called to see if I would like to bring my then-wife, son, and friend along for a sight seeing pleasure flight in the chopper. We spent nearly an hour doing maneuvers and low-level, high-speed runs over marshland and ocean. We requested and were granted landing permission at KSSI (St. Simons Island) when we were three minutes out at 3,000' MSL. My so-called friend came on the intercom and said "Watch this!" I recall, in slow motion, his reaching out from the right seat to cycle the emergency fuel cut-off switch. The annunciator panel went from green to orange to red. We were going to auto-rotate and were too low to get a relight/restart. I turned around and told my wife, son, and friend (who was busy shooting 3 frames/second with his Nikon) to Brace-Brace-Brace.

We flared 50' too soon and went down on the beach. Airspeed was indicated at 60 kts. and the VSI was pegged full down. Our skids dug into the sand, we tipped forward, and the main rotors made a clean decapitation of the boom. My wife grabbed our 8-year-old son and exited beneath the still-rotating main, which fluffed her hair. Had she been an inch taller - curtains! I fumbled frantically and finally released my five-point harness and exited stage left.

We walked about a quarter mile up the beach on Sea Island and encountered four gentlemen who were leaning out of a porch on the third floor of a condominium. They yelled "Hey! Did you see that helicopter go down? It was smoking and going too fast!" I responded "Yeah! We were in it!" "Do you want a drink?", they asked. Moments later, four gentlemen from Atlanta hugged us and motioned to a table upon which were half-gallons of every alcoholic beverage known to modern man. I grabbed a bottle and glugged. Our "pilot", replete in the knowledge that the FAA would be around soon, did not partake. My wife, who worked for the Sea Island Company, commandeered one of their limousines and took our son home. Our friend still has photos of the entire episode.

All by way of saying Thank You for bringing the joy of High Flight back to me. I have been afraid all these years and now am not. I owe a debt of gratitude to he who understands the serenity of a clear blue mountain lake, a kind and beautiful Bride, and the miracle of Himalayan Mountain Highs.

John Denver, whose Dad flew B-58's, would be proud...

(And jealous!)

Best and Highest Regards,

Ed :D

Interesting, what other read out of a short comment so....

VR quoted, that he might have sleept a minute in groundschool - regading to my earlier post.
And that was about simple physics temperature / pressure correlations.

Whats that info good for? Try to boil an egg at sea level for five minutes - and at 20.000 feet - and enjoy the differences :E

Hi Flying Bull when my kids were small they loved Soft Boiled Egss and Toast Soldiers for breakfast. Now cooking a boiled egg to perfection is a life skill that takes effort and work.
I used to ,and still do, tell them that the factors that must be assessed are the temperature of the egg, the OAT and the QFE to determine the exact boiling time.

I would not like to test my theories on an egg at VFs altitudes!

Irony as an attempt to overcome terror induced by the Zp number.

Good morning young fellow! Watching the TV program(Everest Rescue) I noticed one of the pilots(Ryan) using what appears to be an iPad or tablet computer. He was able to enter all sorts of relevant details such as altitude, temperature, wind, etc., and it comes up with some serious answers including fuel required.

Is the program proprietary software, or something that he has developed himself? Do you use such a program, and if so how useful is it? Cheers mate.

You captured interesting moment at post #4165. It seems that some climber stepped on the cornice in the middle of the photo and apparently part of it fell off – you can see the the trace of the chunk down in the snow slope. The climber probably didn't like what he saw and decided not to continue on the edge, turned a bit back and traversed under the cornice.

This reminded me of my climbing era a quarter century ago...

We don't have many dogs but a sh*t load of cats! We have no snow but some dust. The beer is good too. The local speciality food is "Rabbit" cooked in red wine. What do yah think! Should I go for it? After about 12K hrs droning out over the ocean taking the oil bears to work and back a little flying on a small island doing good work for the people of Malta is just the tonic. First visit to Malta in the early seventies aboard a Victor Mk 1 tanker; another of the crew had never been before and so the Captain requested and received the OK to fly around the Island at low level. The comment from the other first visitor - 'Cor ! It's like a brickies back yard' made us all laugh. Lovely place.
