VF has one of those fancy electrical TCAS thingies in his whirly-copter: rumoured the traffic collision avoidance advisory had him descending to avoid whacking his whirly-copter into the space station. As we all know, his tail rotor seems to be a magnet for all sorts of unfortunate things.

Congratulations VF as OP of a thread now with 5000+ posts. We all owe you a cold tall green bottle with fizzy stuff. Just remember they not twist tops, you need the TPUOT (thirsty pilot universal opening tool) to open those.

G'day vaqueroaero..... it's a North Wall made in Italia, lightest & toughest on the market apparently. Has a dual visor system which flips back inside the helmet between the inner & outer shell. Great system, keeps the visor dust & scratch free :ok: Very comfy with an Ozz made ANR system, the Bose never seemed to work right, always breaking the ear seals :uhoh: Home made Sun Peak...works awesome early & late arvos with a harsh Sun :cool:

Hey VF, when it comes to what one eats I've always believed it's a matter of balance.
I like my animal products but I also like to know they have been raised well and treated with respect. This isn't something that works well for the masses at scale unfortunately with bulk farming.
What has always amused me is that you will never see non-veges (meatatarians?) convincing others to eat more meat. The veggie/vegan movement has almost become religious (much like them cyclists :E ) and just won't be happy until all us heathens are converted, beware the carrot-inquisition!

Good morning VF. A request. I really enjoy your great photographs on this forum but I am getting a little tired of being lectured on veganism. Those photos make me squirm! I wonder if you would like to start a new thread about your dietary life so the we can just enjoy the mountains and the people?

PS - not entirely sure that this Rotorheads section is suitable for that. Jet Blast????????

I imagine that deer is going to be ceremoniously decapitated with one blow of a Kukri. The Ghurkha regiment I was attached to in Borneo had a ceremony where the RSM lopped the head off a calf with a BIG kukri.

Then they cooked and eat it.

Namaste

The picture post in 5081 is of a baby cow being taken for a Hindu blessing. It will not be killed, at least not by Hindus as the cow is sacred. Traditionally both Buddhist and Hindu are vegetarians.

Glad to see you back Capt VF, thank you for your unique postings. It is sad that some is is still deleting so many of yours and others posts from here?

G'Day Steve! Some of your recent photographs depict what I interpret to be dammed rivers. The lakes behind the dams appear rather narrow but extremely deep - immense volumes of water are stored. Several feature a number of houses and larger buildings (entire villages?) immediately downstream of those occluded rivers. Is this a common feature in Nepal and Tibet? (I'm thinking artificial lake + earthquake = flooding disaster.) Keep posting your great shots of massive mountains of rock, delectable mounds of food, and lovely ladies, Sir! We all appreciate your considerable and artistic efforts...

That's not really true, guilliBell, now is it? VF chose NOT to answer a question which was specifically asked directly of him: "Hi VF, where is that place...?"
Instead, you chose to jump straight in with:
Well, I recognise the place....
on which you were challenged to reveal your information, possibly because of the cryptic comment you again chose to add to your answer, doubtless added simply to intrigue and to increase the interest in your obviously highly privileged and esoteric information. You then chose to try to crank up the mystery (and probably your perceived superiority) yet further with your even more self-important and aloof comment:
Nope...I know where he is and what he's doing, but not for me to say.

It reminds me of the school playground nonsense where some children like to sound superior with "I know something that you don't know", but who then refuse to share their mysterious (mythical?) secret just to irritate and annoy. Thankfully most children grow out of that obnoxious behaviour quite quickly.

As for wearing a military uniform once 3 years retired from the military, having a grandmother who can pull a few strings is very helpful. Mount Everest: The high-altitude rubbish dump
https://au.news.yahoo.com/mount-everest-high-altitude-rubbish-dump-042659639.html (https://au.news.yahoo.com/mount-everest-high-altitude-rubbish-dump-042659639.html)

More than eight tonnes of waste has been retrieved from Mount Everest in the past two months, including rubbish, mountaineering gear and even human excrement left by a growing numbers of visitors.Enthusiasts from all over the world who flock to the world’s tallest mountain, at a height of 8,850 metres between Tibet and Nepal, discard tonnes of rubbish each year.

A team of 30 people has cleared about 5.2 tonnes of household waste, 2.3 tonnes of human faeces, and one tonne of mountaineering rubbish in the cleanup by Tibetan mountaineering officials, the paper said.

The work is almost as demanding as tackling the summit, say climbers, since collection is a strenuous task that boosts the consumption of oxygen people need to breathe, it added.
During last year’s climbing season, which usually runs from March until May, 202 climbers summitted from the Tibetan side, versus 446 from the Nepali side, while thousands of tourists visited base camps on both sides.
The warming global climate has melted frozen garbage left by climbers over decades, spurring environmental concerns in Nepal, India and China, which is taking tough measures to clean up air, water and soil contaminated after decades of breakneck growth.

Mountaineering expedition organizers in Nepal are sending huge trash bags with climbers on Mount Everest during the spring climbing season to collect trash that then can be winched by helicopters back to the base camp. Source: AP, file

Since 2015, officials in Tibet have given every climber two rubbish bags to retrieve at least 8kg of rubbish, levying a fine of $100 for each kilogram by which a climber falls short. Nepal adopted similar rules in 2014.
China also plans to build environmentally friendly toilet and waste collection sites at Mount Everest, the official Xinhua news agency said.Authorities in Tibet have pledged to complete 45 pollution cleanup tasks before 2020, according to a list published this week by the environment ministry, after a central inspection team flagged concerns last year.
Beijing plans a further round of inspections early next year, the People’s Daily newspaper of the ruling Communist Party has said.

gulliBell

I'm not sure how serious the anti-icing would be....anti-icing consumes power, and he needs every foot-lb of torque (or whatever those Frenchy instruments indicate) he can squeeze out of it. He would probably choose to stay out of icing conditions. My guess, he's got electric heating on the pitot tubes, and electric and/or bleed air anti-ice on the engines. Oops, I meant engine. But, I'm sure VF will be on here sooner or later to provide a definitive answer.

On an elevated helideck you plant it in the middle of the circle that is painted there for that purpose. Once you’ve landed you lower the collective all the way down. You might leave it at full noise, or you might drop it back to idle, depending on your SOP. But either way, the helicopter just doesn’t slip off the roof!
Very little damage evident on the safety netting, so fair bet it never had the weight of the helicopter on it. Fair chance I reckon he just had an oopsie moment and came in short.

Chatting to a few guys yesterday who had spoken to the pilot sounds like he was directly over the pad centre in a high hover descending when there was a sudden change of circumstances and it all went wrong from there. It will be interesting to see if they find a technical issue during investigation, which does not explain why he did not make the pad, but will confirm the pilots side of events.

Hi VF, have you seen this article on "unnecessary-rescues-soar-in-nepal-on-profits-from-insurance-payouts"?

Is this true and if so does it affect your operations? For an operator the more flying the better, but when there is going to be a clamp-down obviously it is not welcomed. To what degree is the operator/pilot put on the spot with regards to certifying that the flight was warranted?

Gullible, you better tell VF. It seems he doesnˋt know about how to land on an elevated pad😉

VF can do whatever he wants. But on an elevated heliport, you land within the Touchdown/Positioning marking - otherwise known as the yellow circle with the H painted in the middle of it. With the pilot seat positioned anywhere over the TD/PM the undercarriage is assured to be within the load bearing area of the helideck. That's how they design them.

Why should you end up in a high hover above an elevated Helipad?
You can Do a steeper than normal approach, but you should always see the landing spot between your feet, so in case anythings goes bollocks, you know where to aim for.... - its the only spot available.....

G'day gulliBell..........good question Mate :D 'slipped, whaaaat.the F? - SLIPPED' sheet.hey I guess some rouge Monkeys did a runner from the Monkey temple to go for a leisurely picnic with a great view (Grande H)...following their rowdy partying they'd left their Banana peels up there, which shockingly caused the slip :yuk:
+++++++++
Hoy evil7....if a Pilot carries out a proper landing (lever fully down to the floor) then tests/proves ground stability; then that will save machines falling over & if the TR is safely outa the way, saves Lives too (double bonus) :8
+++++++++
Hey there Self loading bear.................think I'll go with the Monkeys leaving Banana peel story :eek:
+++++++++
G'day gulliBell....thanks for that, I designed the Grande Hospital Helideck, visited a dozen times during construction, was first to test it & landed there over 300 times on her, I can assure You the weight bearing properties are even throughout the entire deck structure & not stronger inside the yellow circle or rather yellow square it this case :p You can still land inside the yellow landing area with the TR overhanging away from over excited relatives & nurses running around the machine...safer that way :ok:
+++++++++
Hello Bhutan_H130.................please contact the operators & insurance companies for more info, I cannot comment on this topic :suspect:
+++++++++
Hey evil7.......please explain to me Sir how exactly to land? I guess after 40,000+ successful landings I still need some serious learnin' :O Thanks in advance for Your advice :ok:
+++++++++
Namaste Flying Bull.....good points Sir! Actually I also cannot understand why You'd arrive so high in a HOGE, certainly won't work on a tiny pinnacle pad above 20,000' - crazy.Man.crazy :ouch:

Hallo VF,
you misunderstood me there. I was being sarcastic to gullibells advice to always Land within the circle of an elevated helipad. I am more on your side with keeping the TR safe. Especially in your environment.
Always happy landings😉

In support of gulliBell's statement with a slight correction.

On a correctly marked heliport (i.e. in accordance with ICAO Annex 14 Part II):

Having the pilot on the touchdown/positioning marker (i.e. the (yellow) touchdown positioning circle (TDPC) or other 'defined' marking) serves two purposes. It ensures that:

1. the undercarriage is within the load bearing area (TLOF); and,

2. all parts of the helicopter are clear of obstacles (FATO).

That does not necessarily mean the wheels/skids are within the TDPC – the minimum size of the TLOF plus the attributes of the TD/PM are designed to ensure that element 1. is achieved.

Further; the obstacle limitations ensure that the undercarriage is protected within the TLOF and other moving parts are protected within the FATO.

Not being correctly positioned negates these assurances.

Well, I did say the pilot seat needs to be over the TD/PM...I didn't say that the undercarriage had to be in the yellow. With the pilot seat positioned over the TD/PM, wherever the undercarriage happens to end up will be in the certified load bearing area of the helideck, by design. But as VF mentioned, it was designed and built in excess of that criteria. So hang the tail over if you wish, avoiding any slippery bananas skins left by errant monkeys otherwise the whole shooting match might end up over the side.

Whether or not I protest readily doesn't matter, because nobody pays any attention to anything I might have to say about anything. Lucky for me, I've given up the helicopter flying caper after 30 years.

I had a chuckle at the comment about the helicopter sustaining minor damages.

You could buy those naughty temple monkeys a life time supply of bananas for what it's going to cost to fix that thing. Sudden stoppage, power train stuffed. Rotor blades stuffed. MR Head stuffed. Tail boom stuffed. Chassis probably bent like a banana. Landing gear bent. Yeah right, that thing is a write-off.

Those holes in the wall with the wood sticking out reminds me of houses in Southern France where whole tree trunks sticking out of both sides of a building support the internal floors.

G'day cooperplace.............thank You Sir, my goal is being Safe - always :cool: Highest is 28,800' filming :eek: ICING....Naaaar just stay away from moisture @ 4º & below & Your laughing ;)

Hoy there gulliBell....exactly Korrekt Mate; bleed-air cabin heating & demisting screen (of sorts) + Pitot tube heater (great for Kids & Adults alike, to swing off after You shut down but leave the Pitot heater ON :} ) Yep it's an optional extra (bad luck) to seek out & enter icing conditions :yuk:

Hi VF, 28,800' is amazing. Would be very happy to read more details of that flight. Staying out of icing conditions in that part of the world must be tricky at times. Very impressive. Please keep on posting the great photos, loving them.

..Staying out of icing conditions in that part of the world must be tricky at times...

Just a stab in the dark, because I've only had to use anti-ice maybe only one or twice in 20+ years, but I wouldn't have thought icing would be too much of an issue at those low OAT if you keep out of the clouds. Not likely to be any visible moisture outside the clouds because it's too cold. And keeping out of the clouds is what you'd be doing in any event in a VFR operation.
