Just heard about the earthquake, it is funny, just a couple of days ago i was thinking about a vacation in Nepal with a trekking to the EBC and now i heard that this beautiful country, where by the way i spent 1 year of my life as a kid and that i learnt how to love and appreciate, has been striken by an earthquake! i truly hope that the temples in Katmandu where my sister and i used to sit and spend countless hours looking at the variagated throng of people with their countless colors swarming by, are not too damage but above all i truly hope that the people of nepal are fine and i am positive that they will recover cos they are as strong as the mountains they have grown to learn how to relate to so deeply and with such a great deal of harmony!

Private updates from Steve just now are that he has water ("spring water still OK"). I can't report that he has much more than that, other than an intermittent internet connection.

Steve is an intelligent and resourceful man with a cool head in a crisis (Auto into a gorge with whitewater at bottom anyone?), but like all of us I am concerned for him and his wife as the true scale of this tragedy unfolds.

News from my son who is in the Brit army, a C17 full of Gurka's was dispatched last night with emergency rations and med systems, the Indian and Pak Army have both responded also with Military C17s with Field Hospitals and all the bodies needed to run them,
Steve (VF) is exhausted having nearly flown himself to a standstill, you name it and its in short supply, intermittent comms and elec.

Local news in Singapore says, the Singapore Airforce's 3 X C 130s were diverted to Kolkata, due to congestion in Kathmandu.

RSAF was carrying their own 4X4s and vehicles, for quick deployment.

ABC Australia reporting that road access to epi center is still impossible and helicopters is the only way in.
But they also note that only 10 helicopters are available for the entire country.

There are more than 10 helicopters just from the private companies. I do not have the exact numbers but Simrik, Mountain, Fishtail, Dynasty, Manang, Shree have at least 2 helicopters in their fleet.

ABC again tonight making a point that there are too few helicopters with one reporter saying she had only seen one.
I think the journos are frustrated by still not being able to travel to the epi center so are keen to emphasise the reason.

Power is now back on (in the KTM Valley), shops still closed, Veggie markets are 40% back, Spring waters are still OK. No Petrol. We are fine, after-shocks continue less frequently now, there were 4 every 1 hour, of magnitude 6.5 for the first 3 days continuously after the big ONE - 7.9.

The tragic enormity of this devastating Earthquake is yet to be comprehended..........with the Death toll in the tens of thousands. The lose of homes, infrastructure, livelihoods, Family Heirlooms, Historical artifacts etc. is enormous.

Yes many Nepali People need Our help here....So please for Your kind information....My Wife a Nepali Sherpa & I are helping set-up an Earthquake Victims Fund to rebuild destroyed Homes in effected remote areas, giving urgently needed funds to those effected directly when I fly there. 6th day after the destructive 7.9 Earthquake hit. We now have intermittent electricity but often on half power, so water-pumps. fridges, etc can't run.

Life is not back to normal with the Peoples mood being very sombre.

Government is still hindering Rescue efforts as well as denying urgently needed help from landing at VNKT &/or held at the airport denying permission for delivery???

I think we all (some secretly) love and aspire to VF/Steve's work. Whether you admire what he does in his manipulation of the machine in the upper part of the RFM graph, his photography, his sharing of the experience, his promotion of the capabilities of any of the AS350x family, his commitment to sticking the tail rotor wherever anyone isn't .... we get it. And to see the rescuer almost need rescuing is at the very least sobering, as it could happen to any of us.

I know Steve has been doing it tough the last week or so. Fortunately he is a vegetarian so has done quite well on spring water and weeds. ;) But he has done it not just without complaining, but with an eye to helping the people he has met every week, the people he knows need help, the people that have little profile or advocacy, the people in the the rural regions of Nepal who are at the ragged edge of community collapse when their binding infrastructure literally falls down around them.

It is the direct action of Steve and his wife Dolma Sherpini, that will make a difference. Hence his fund.

Day 9, Earthquakes continue, but with less frequency. First few days it was 3 or 4 per hour, now it's every 3 or 4 hours there's ONE, sometimes up to 6.6, so sadly weakened building are still collapsing......when the earth moves like this; it is truly FRIGHTENING

after shocks continue.....the Missus & work staff evacuated their 5 storey building in Thamil yesterday afternoon thinking the building was going to collapse, it was shaking so violently, all were very frightened & crying. Many buildings are becoming weaker & weaker with so many aftershocks. This building collapsed just yesterday

G'day Safe.Fly123, thank You, we are OK, but tired of the massive aftershocks that are still coming & wondering if this One is gonna be the next big ONE :} at least one Pilot here could no longer cope with the work pressure & the danger & the aftershocks & so left Nepal, can't blame his decision :O

As for the good clix, thanks.......just lucky with an iPhone I guess & having a good pair of auto-Pilot knees to jiggle the cyclic for me :eek:

Good morning krypton_john, totally correct, in-fact they have been politely requested (V22) not to come near any villages as they are destroying the remainder of the buildings undamaged by the Earthquake are now collapsing from the massive down-wash :(

12th May around 2pm another huge Earthquake struck. My Wife Dolma was at work in Thamil, 5 story building when it began to violently shake, 29staff ran, screaming, crying, stumbling out of the only narrow stairwell........which then went like jelly Dolma described, all frightened the building would come in around their ears :mad: this Hospital collapsed same time, but was already condemned by the Government after the 25th April Quake so luckily was empty. 3 big after shakes followed in the high Sixes. Many more Homes throughput the effected area collapsed. There are now around 250,000 homes destroyed by this tragic event :(

Hey TWT, yes the after shockers (sadly) still continue, just 4 or so a day now, instead of 4 or so an hour as it was in the first 2-3 weeks after the Big E.......But now flying, there's an extra A in the SWAAT check's to survey the area & the landing pad for the risk of????? Rock Avalanche, Ice Avalanche, Mud Avalanche, or Soil Avalanche........not so easy as I'm no Geologist nor Seismologist :{

TRE???? if that is torque, then we never hit a TRQ limit up here ever :8 Ng is always the first & only limit, even in Summer we don't T4 temp out; ever! :ooh:

TRE if Tail Rotor Effectiveness then yes we do suffer LTA above 20,000' in ISA +20 conditions or more; on extreme DA days :} You can easily hit the power peddle bump-stop limit on short final where Your out of pedal, but not out of power :eek:

I heard.........he'd landed at the H told by office, which was the wrong H for the clients, during departure he was too heavy....during the power check the aircraft drifted & came in contact with a rock that was politely sitting there, hence the Tail-Rotor fling-wings, flung off, causing a roll-over. No serious injuries & a lucky escape for all, as the machine caught fire & burnt to the ground shortly after :\
