No different than buying a flat with a 99 year lease. I think Southend has a 99 year lease. The new concession will have value and can be sold on. The existing concession has been sold on at least 3 times for a lease that was originally just 30 years. I think the second operator was TBI.

The date of the report is 1994, which is clearly wrong, more like 1998.

I hope your not counting me as one of the 'rough' types you were referring to. What a crass statement, how on earth can you lump upwards of 12 million passengers together, absolutely ridiculous. Having used the airport for over 50 years there is good and bad everywhere. I have travelled through some grim airports around the world and Luton is not among the worst but neither is it one of the best. Saying the airport has 'dodgy' passengers and not fit for children to pass through is quite frankly a bit disturbing. Is the little England rearing it's its head again.

The Which survey has often (but not always) put Luton near the bottom of the list in the UK. That's probably for a reason.
That said, there are other similiar airports which are worse - Marseille-T2, Paris-Beauvais and Rome-Ciampino come to mind.

I tend to agree with Pain in the R’s views. I’ve operated out of the airport for about 30 years, it is a shameful experience predominately populated with passengers I do not want to associate with in facilities that are appalling but I continue to use it because for me both as operating crew and as a passenger it is convenient for where I live and so I endure with it but it could be so more pleasant. Almost anywhere else I fly to the experience is more pleasant than at LTN.

I guess it is best not to mention what those passengers had in common but it is something that seems to be unique to Luton in this country and who are not found at Heathrow.

I am also struggling to think of a single British airport where passengers are allowed to ignore no smoking signs and smoke in the covered doorways of a terminal and where I have witnessed staff in uniform joining the passengers in the big puff. I say again the airport is the pits and so are many of its passengers.

Hopefully it will be many years before I return.
Never in my 40 years of working or flying from Luton Airport have I experienced the scenes that you portray as typical. In addition you come across as someone who dislikes persons born abroad and further more you must be sensitive because you portrayed yourself as being easily intimidated by persons you had no interaction with. During the last 3 years Luton airport Police investigated 1150 crimes. In 1 year alone Heathrow dealt with 3572 cases. I suggest you look up Crime at U.K. Airports -The most dangerous. This will enlighten you to facts!

I think airport crimes has more to do with border control offences but saying that Luton Airport is generally as safe as houses. It’s the town centre that poses the danger, with drug taking, beggars, drunks, muggers and gangs, which is why many people won’t go there. It has been years since I have been there after dark.

How many times has LRT/LBC claimed confidentiality when trying to bury bad news.

Despite King Charles having taken a ride on the Dart in December, the latest communication from Luton Rising says that the railway will not be open before Easter – the weekend of 9 April – and that the overall cost will be approaching or over £300M. A Luton Council spokesperson said: “The Luton Rising Board has been advised that it is reasonable to expect that costs may exceed £290M. This is subject to ongoing and confidential commercial discussions and will be reported in the usual way when further information is available.”
“Reported in the usual way” means buried in the minutes of a secret LRT report that won’t be made public that in turn will be reported as a two liner hidden deep in an obscure Council paper with the hope that no one reads it.

This is a financial scandal of epic proportions. Despite the reports, the origin cost was reported as £200m and that it would open in 2020.

Meanwhile on Saturday there is a consultation with the public regarding the scaling back of pensioners bus passes, as the council can’t afford them. The Council leader says it is not the Council’s fault. Is she joking?

But all big projects always have overrunning costs eg Elizabeth Line in London, again late and well over budget.
There had been suggestion of a dispute with Network Rail over revenue sharing, but Luton Council told NCE: “It is wholly inaccurate to suggest there is a dispute with Network Rail regarding revenue sharing. There have been constructive discussions with all our operating partners aimed at ensuring future revenues are allocated where they should be, and that appropriate contractual arrangements are entered into.”
If commercial contacts have still not been signed off then it is right that final cost figures are not published until these are in place.

The Elizabeth line wasn’t funded by a local Council that has always claimed to be broke. Well now it truly is as the Council was bailed out by the government to stop it going bankrupt. They have spent £300m on a project that won’t benefit the town’s people. They can’t even use the reduction in road traffic as an excuse as they are planning a 60% increase in road traffic heading for the airport. By the time it is opened I expect over £200m will be written off. Well that would have paid for a lot of bus passes.

No wonder the airport operator said no, as it was even unaffordable to them and their 2 shareholders are worth $2.4bn

I think you will find the two shareholders are worth alot more than that and isn't ANEA still 51% owned by Spanish state, but Spain has lots of vanity airports abandoned and so should know a thing about wasteful infrastructure projects.

It was a similar picture in Switzerland, where a weather station in the Jura range saw a record daily average of 18.1C on New Year's Day.
Switzerland's Adelboden, which on Saturday hosts World Cup skiing, is having to run the race on 100% artificial snow this year.

The Swiss resort of Splugen-Tambo, despite a base altitude of 1480m, also said on Monday that it was closing "until further notice".

Yes - but it will impact on the operation of some of its customer airlines. If this is the start of a long term trend, it will have an impact on many airlines/airports who rely on the ski trade to keep busy at the slack time of year

Actually I can. Aviation is responsible for 12% of CO2 emissions from all transports sources. Luton plans to nearly double emissions from aircraft movements so contributing to a lack of snow if you believe in global warming.

.
All transport.... Quoting figures for the whole world, go to India or China and jump up and down about their plans for more airports - or perhaps Southampton for accepting horrible fueled mega boats which directly affect the oceans.
Stopping expansion at Luton just pushes problem somewhere else, but perhaps, out of sight, out if mind.

Goodbye to skiing flights from Luton then, as global warming is unstoppable? Maybe Luton will be doing its bit due to a lack of demand. Flights this Saturday to Geneva from only £39.99 including taxes for those who want walking holidays in the Alps. Trouble is there isn’t much demand.

The recession in the UK is going to be long. It does not matter what the Bank of England says or does - people know that they are going to have to be careful with money for the next five years - minimum. They know this because we went through this post 2008. That recovery eventually took almost ten years. Just in time for Covid.

PAXboy is once again spot on.

First sacrifice for 2023 is a continuation of 2022. Like others here a cut back on the number of holidays we take was the first decision to preserve cash.

Sleepy old BBC just caught up, see post 2303.

Evening Standard reporting 10 new Skyscrapers planned for London and that is usually a measure of business confidence, although the man in the street might be suffering, big business, it seems is not.

And what is all this by the Labour Party leader giving more power back to the Local Authorities, bet LBC can't wait!
