This is not some plan dreamt up in a closed room at the council.
It's a legal requirement to for UK airports using scanners to replace them with the new scanners by June 24.

Correct and such statements like "Sounds like a plan. A bad plan, as the pinch point is not only the X-ray machines but the body metal detectors. People will still be wearing belts, shoes and watches that have to be removed." are incorrect.
The whole point of this new Technology is they don't !

I can’t find any reference that the existing body scanners will be changed for newer models that don’t require metal objects to be removed from passengers. These new scanners are for bags only.

And to use my bus pass on it, I have to sign up & download a free ticket. Ridiculous.

I am thinking once you have an account set up you can download tickets as often as you like but I know pensioner passengers who don't use the internet so they will suffer from technology discrimination especially if the download is paperless and is sent to a smart phone for scanning.

Once approved, you will receive an email confirming your concession account details, which will allow you to download free DART tickets.

Please note, you must carry your proof of ID when travelling on the Luton DART.

From Tech Market view.
"At Luton, the first lanes are expected to open to the public in Q423. All airports must comply with the DFT and CAA requirements for the implementation of C3 technology for baggage screening (allowing everything to stay within the bag) and use of 100% body scanning for passengers by June 2024."
Remember Luton based MacDonald Humfrey Automation is part of Leidos now and along with the acquired L3 Harris businesd offers the full package across baggage and people scanners.
They already use ProVision 2 People scanners which will get upgrades.
"
To further improve operations, Leidos will also install its Mosaic open-architecture software platform, which will integrate all security components into a single management system."

Hope this is an ok place to pose this question, I’ve been out of the Luton world for a few years.

what options are there for elderly relatives who hold a Blue Badge getting to Luton by Taxi, to catch a flight.

For their outbound flight, the options look to be just getting a local Cab to Mid term. However with luggage etc, the trip then to the Terminal is less than Ideal.

For the return they normally just catch one of the official LTN airport cabs for the journey home.

I see Blue badge holders get 30 mins free in the Multi Storey, would a cab be allowed to drop pax in the MSCP if in possession of a passenger’s blue badge?

Don't use the mid term, as it is a long walk with no buses. Also it is now only 15 minutes free. Better to be dropped off in the long term car park and ask to be dropped off by a car park bus stop for departing passengers. The driver will get 1 hours free parking.

Regarding being dropped off in the multi story. They would have to only use car park 1 and the driver would have to make his way to the priority parking office to register his vehicle, showing I guess the blue badge. Too much faff, I doubt the driver would do it.

The other option is to pay the £5 for the drop off zone.

So we have been informed that if you work at the airport then you can use the Dart for free while the towns residents who have paid for it will have to pay. Ha ha ha I love it.

There is some kind of DART launch media bunfight on Thursday morning at 0930.

No details; I know of it as I been invited to go with my rail reporter hat on; not able to go; the day job is in the way.

Passengers can book rail tickets to the end of May, where it still shows a bookable £3.80 return between Parkway and the Airport rather than £9.80. Now why would that be?

As for free travel for the airport workers, the shuttle bus was free. If LRT charged staff it would cost many airport workers £49 a week for the final mile or around 5 hours pay.

Construction update

Photos taken recently in arduous conditions

Photo shows nicely why Taxiway Delta remains closed with the temporary fence moved to the edge of the taxiway in the top left hand corner. Also note that a new road has cut the corner off the new apron.

General view of the progress on the new apron.

The new apron will be L shaped with a retaining wall against the Southern Apron that then runs north until the wall meets the dropping land where the wall ends.

Looking at where the two aprons meet, it can be seen that due to the retaining wall running north, this section will have restricted aircraft access. Maybe just for biz jets? The existing lighting tower that was speculated to be in the middle of the apron is now on the edge due to this wall.

Day one. Now occasionally open to the public.

Spotted. Shame it is such a shocking train, with no luggage space and the promised refurbishment not appearing to have happened.

TTG reporting
"During the first three weeks of its initial opening, rail passengers will be able to use the Luton Dart instead of the bus for no additional charge."
"The Dart service will be included in any rail ticket where customers choose Luton airport as the start or end point of their journey." but I didn't seem to be able to book through to the Airport with a well known train App.

I good report from a rail users site though https://busandtrainuser.com/2023/03/...-finally-open/
And a good write up in FT as well.
Balanced from The Telegraph https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/n...train-journey/

I did a dummy booking on Thameslink for 20th May. Return trip between airport and Parkway =£3.80 which is the shuttle bus price.

Many businesses at the airport are no longer aviation related with much of the land and buildings derelict. Also many businesses that were located at the airport have been kicked out leaving the buildings empty. Guess who the landlord was?
