May Pax
Source CAA:
May 783218 -6.9% lower than BHX but higher than EDI and the
rolling year 8812887 -8.6% still more than BHX & EDI.
Victor Oscar
Probably not quite the news you wanted but could have been worse.
Not sure if Luton suffered from many cancellations during May due the
knock-on effects from the ash cloud or easy crewing problems but still
a long way from positive figures.

A major factor is Easyjet's ongoing dispute over charges with the airport operator, the consequence of which, they announced a 20% reduction in S10 services over S09. With still no resolution in sight, the situation is likely to get worse. Easy's reduction was expected to result in the airline carrying about 800,000 less pax in a full year from LTN.

May Passenger Figures
Having a quick scan through the CAA statistics for the month of May, I think things could have been considerably worse - the domestics seem to have suffered quite a bit obviously due to the ash problems etc. but the East European routes seem to have stood up quite well. I see that more people flew between Luton and Budapest and Luton and Bucharest than any other UK airport - I really must get out more!
It will be interesting to see how the easy spat affects passengers later in the year and I think winter 2010-11 is going to be very difficult for all UK airports especially the so-called regional ones.

flybe
flybe have announced a new flight to glasgow from luton, now bookable, although it looks like its only twice a week
could they be about to exploit some of easyjets cutbacks? any other opinions?

Looks like it is via IOM.
First sector is Flybe and the second Loganair.
Not sure how they think this will be attractive and the days of operation seem erratic..
If ,on the other hand we could convince Flybe to operate European routes from LTN!!!!

Ltn-iom-gla
Agreed, there's nothing attractive in this from LTN's point of view unless it gives a more frequent LTN-IOM flight. Flybe are an airline that have never been much interested in developing routes from LTN, although the old LTN-LPL would be ideal for them, as would other domestic and near-European routes. How about Scandinavia?

A quick transit today, a packed LTN again today with VVIP metal, probably due to some Tennis thing......
Why can't everyone sit down at a table and agree more concrete & sort out the charges......everyone benefits then!
Luton Town Hall needs one big kick up the jacksie!

And just why would LBC want to sit down an re-negotiate a deal made with AGI? TBI bought AGI, then ACDL acquired the concession. Each owner knew the rules.
Frankly the townsfolk of Luton have faired rather well from the concession charge.
As to whether it is in the best interest long term of the airport, ask ACDL.
If only we could confront our bank if we considered our mortgage to be too expensive after 12 years through a 25 year term.
As for expansion and investment. Forget it!
As for those that did the deal for Luton, no doubt they are dispersed globally|

But everyone sits down and re-negotiates, that is business!
Most profitable agile companies do this, as for LBC suppose they only look as far as the steps of the Town Hall, I quote from their own Web Site;
"Welcome to Luton Borough Council Business pages. Luton is a thriving, growing Town and is an ideal location for your business. Whether you are looking to start up a business, grow your business or locate your business to Luton, we are here to provide you with all the help and information to help you acheive this."

Am I right in thinking the TBI/Abertis deal for the managing the airport finishes in 2012 and goes out to tender again?
If this is the case I doubt we'll see much investment or change to the airport over the next two years and Abertis will just try to cream as much outta the airport in this time remaining.

wikipedia says it was a 30 year deal with LLAOL from 1997 so if this still stands after being sold to TBI and later ACDL, it got a lot longer to run before they can walk away....

Saw an article on local TV news this week that the town’s new swimming pool was going to be funded from profits from the airport. Why would the town hall want to change anything?

Did the queen fly out Luton today?
Bit of a random question, but did the queen fly out of Luton today on one of the Canadian Air Forces A310's?
I have seen them flying into LTN a fair bit recently and today the queen has started her state visit to Nova Scotia in Canada and could clearly see her getting off a Canadian Air Force A310.

When I was involved with the concession process, I understood it to be a 25 year deal with options to extend. With so little time remaining on the concession, ACDL were unwilling to capital invest as there was too little time to repay until in theory, they handed the airport back to the town. Things may have changed in recent times though?
As I have said previously, the deal done by LBC was superb for the town, questionable for the airport?
So what effect will the recent Ryanair press release have on Luton?
