Ryanair Etc

Many thanks Giles and annalist, it looks to me as though Luton has got off fairly lightly with Ryanair this winter compared to some other bases including my 创home创 base of Malaga where a big expansion has just taken place and now a winter cutback with a lot of crew can now go on unpaid leave for four months in the winter - what joy ad what a company to work for.
On another tack I see easyJet are starting a service to Zagreb from London Gatwick of course and how it will affect Wizzair which have been flying the route for some time into Luton. I would think Croatia Airlines would be the big loser. Any commets please.
Went through Luton last Monday morning (the 5th) and very busy at 5 am - so it should be in the first week of July but very quickly through security etc. but entering a week earlier at the 创UK BORDER创 a 20 minute wait - mainland Europeans chuntering about having to have their passports scanned etc. when free movement on the Continent - no Shengen agreement here!

Hi Anna List, yes you are right that is 66 flights a week, not the 61 I wrote previously!

We might see a one or two routes announced to fill in the gaps on the time, but I personally think it is unlikely!

Did the Knock and Kerry routes operate last winter, correct me if I am wrong, but these routes seem to start and stop all the time...

---------------------

Wizzair I don't think will be too phased by easyJet's new route to Zagreb from Gatwick, easyJet have gradually built up their eastern Europe operations from their south London base over the last few years and quite a few compete directly with Wizzair and we havn't seen many cut back.

I think it is very much a case, that Wizzair are very popular and more well known in Eastern Europe than here in the UK and they have quite a large following by these people. Where easyJet is more well known here than Wizzair.

If a UK resident wanted to travel to eastern europe and were not sure of the airlines that operate the routes there, I am sure they would check Ryanair and easyJet before referring to Wizzair. Simply because Wizzair are not that heavily marketed around here other than around the airport.

--------------------------------

Anyone want to take a guess on the passenger numbers that Luton will have for 2010...

I think it is going to be around 8.5-8.9 million!

June pax down 2.9%

Source: CAA

June 2010 836359 -2.9% rolling year 8787434 -8%

June was quite a way below BHX and EDI but the annual figure
is still ahead of both.

Seems a reasonable figure.

Ryanair-FUE

Ryanair flights from Luton to Fuerteventura have appeared on their website today.
They are in the drop down box but not yet bookable.

That should cover all the Canaries this xmas!

Just noted that Monarchs flights to FUE are not bookable for summer 2011-maybe this is the reson.

On another issue i see Easy have added Nice to their winter timetable 4 x weekly-when did that happen?!

Paphos - ends 3 Nov 10
Easy's flight to Paphos is now bookable, twice weekly, for the winter period, as is Nice, albeit on a reduced frequency.

A gallon of hydrochloric acid - but described simply as "cleaning fluid"???

There seems to be so much more to this story. Was the passenger detained? What excuse was offered for such an illicit cargo? Is he/she being charged? How could such a material escape detection?

Surely it is extremely worrying when this quantity of a hazardous fluid manages to get through Luton's (so called) security, and the airport's bland statement on its website is woefully inadequate. ("The appropriate authorities were called and identified the substance as a cleaning fluid, which was then contained and cleaned up. London Luton Airport staff worked alongside the authorities to remedy the situation as quickly as possible.")

Don't we deserve a fuller explanation?

BBC News - Man charged over Luton airport chemical alert

A 21-year-old man has been charged after a flight from Luton airport was delayed for six hours by a chemical scare.

Dariusz Tkaczyk, from Slough, is due to appear before Bedford Magistrates' Court charged with behaviour likely to endanger an aircraft.

He was arrested after cleaning fluid leaked from luggage on to a bag loaded on to the Portugal-bound aircraft.

The fire service were called as a major security alert was triggered on Friday.

The aircraft was isolated and check-in suspended while both were inspected and cleaned.

A man made himself known to the authorities and claimed he had packed high-strength cleaning fluid in his bag.

Officers trained to deal in hazardous materials and wearing protective suits examined the fluid

Unfortuantly, this kind of thing is often down to the specific "types" of people which an area attracts!

A bit of trivia for you all...

Was watching Family Fortunes on ITV 2 (sure it was repeat!) and in the final round where they go on to win lots of money one of the questions was, "Name a UK Airport" and one of the contestants said Luton...

Of the 100 people they asked in the survey, 6 people said Luton!

32 people said Manchester and 24 Heathrow... They didn't mention the other responses!

Suppose it all dends in what part of the country the survey was done.

Useless fact, but thought you would all have an urge to know!

Well if Luton have less than 6% of the UK market, then it's a PR triumph; or a subconscious response to Lorraine Chase.
