It is H 7/8 and no way can you fit two B757s in that hangar.

Monarch have been using hangar 7 and 8 since 1967, a total of 43 years service and are I believe Luton's oldest surviving hangars. In recent years the hangar was re-skinned.

1967 | 2047 | Flight Archive

"Perhaps the most enviable physical assets acquired so far are
two superb hangars, with integral office accommodation, rented
from the Luton authorities. They are the former flight-test and
production hangars of Hunting Aircraft, later BAC, whence
many a President, Pembroke and Jet Provost emerged. They
are big enough—with modifications to remove the central
supporting pillars—to accommodate anything up to a DC-8-61
as well as a number of smaller aircraft at the same time. The
modifications to the roof are being carried out, at a cost of
about £60,000, by the Luton Corporation, who consider that
this is a good investment in its airport, to which it encourages
the maximum amount of new business.
Monarch had virtually decided to base itself at Stansted,
and had in fact negotiated terms with the British Airports
Authority, when it decided at least to have a look at Luton.
Arriving with their minds virtually made up on Stansted,
Messrs Hodgson and Peacock were apparently so impressed
with their welcome and with the terms and facilities offered
by this go-ahead airport that they decided almost there and
then on Luton"

Ocean Sky to Buy Monarch Hangar

Yes, to the best of my knowledge H7/8 are the original two hangars with which the Airport was opened in 1938, having been built a year or two before. Others soon followed though as the Airport moved onto a war footing. I wasn't here (or anywhere then...), but reading and old pics confirm that.

Do we know why Monarch are selling the hangar - lack of enough business to justify keeping three? Or are they investing further at MAN?

They are building numbers and part of a scheme across the whole airport.

Hangars 7/8 are indeed original (apart from being rebuilt/re-skinned, bit like grandfather's axe ) and were, originally, two hangars. Allegedly Mosquitos were built in them. I do remember seeing the mock-up of the Hunting H107 (which became the BAC1-11) in the first one in the early 60s.

Sunday 9th May car park chaos

There appeared to be a fault with at least one barrier, if not two, in the drop off parking area on Sunday, with one harrassed operative trying to control all the traffic building up...
Is there a design fault or simply bad luck? It doesn't seem possible to ever find Luton Airport problem free as far as traffic to or from the M1 is concerned (ash clouds excepted!).

I am hoping that all the Flights arent loaded yet because if they are LTN is losing a lot of routes/frequencies.

A look in December sees

Nice--- not bookable
Palma --not bookable
Krakow--not bookable
Hamburg--down to daily
Lisbon-----down to daily
Turin-----not bookable
Paphos----not bookable

But Madrid is up to three daily

Grrr

Routes are loaded in stages, expect all the routes to be available to purchase before Nov 1st!

There were also hangars on what is now an industrial estate behind where Luton Flying Club and Helitech was. These were also operated by Hunting/Percival and the old camouflage paint was clearly visible up until they were destroyed! Pre BAC 1-11 development work also went on in these.

Would be good news if they had an operator willing to invest to ''use it to its full potential''

Full parallel taxiway and more concrete for parking aircraft are a couple of things.

Yep agree with more stands, I would have thought using the short term car park was the most obvious. If my memory serves me correctly - I am sure somebody will verify or not - the reason where there is no parellel taxiway down to the 26 threshold is that it would encroach into Hertfordshire - and you know what Herts CC think of Luton Airport - all the noise and no income!

No, not Herts CC but it is land not owned by the airport. There was some talk of a land swap when I was involved but it didn't come to anything. The biggest problem to a full parallel at the eastern end is the amount of land fill required. I seem to remember that someone worked out there wasn't enough dumper trucks in this neck of the woods!

We looked at cutting the extension taxiway in towards the runway (from the current Alpha) but that would mean the Cat II/III hold would still have to be where it current is at Alpha 2. Far better proposal is a parallel to the western end.

Re Herts CC . . . When we carried out a whole series of consultation visits with various local authorities in the 90s Herts were certainly not anti-airport. With the (then) prospect of Hatfield closing (and other industries) they were interested in the jobs then being created at Luton. No idea what the situation is now but don't always believe absolutes.

Back to sleep . . .

They could have got the taxiway nearer the end of the runway while staying within the airport boundary but as already stated the land starts to drop away beyond the present point

There was a lot of land fill available to the Airport when the new access road was cut in over the last couple of years, I was told by someone involved in the project that the airport management were advised but they didn't see the need for the taxiway extension
