They could have got the taxiway nearer the end of the runway while staying within the airport boundary but as already stated the land starts to drop away beyond the present point
There was a slight hiatus when some thought you could plug a taxiway into the side of a runway without closing it (I said the only alternative was to go to the end) but, hey ho, we are where we are today.
I think we dun awright. It captures 99% of 08 arrivals, shortens the backtrack from the original Alpha (how long did I live with that???) and does facilitate some departures from the intersection which, I must admit, we didn't really think of at the time because of the sort of operation we then had.
If anyone from the airport is reading this I am available for further consultation . . . . . . although you probably don't want it

If you go onto the easyJet website and click on the logo which states "Winter 2010/11 flights for sale" it brings up a list of available routes from each U.K base except Newcastle.
For Luton it states all routes are available for sale until 26-Mar-11 except
Alicante - ends 1 Nov 10
Krakow - ends 2 Nov 10
Nice - ends 2 Nov 10
Paphos - ends 3 Nov 10
Palma - ends 1 Nov 10
Maybe they are making these just seasonal routes?

easyjet winter
Had a quick skim through the third week in November and it appears
13-14 aircraft still required at the base. Out of these 4 appear only
to do four sectors on certain days due to the SSH, TLV, SAW and
Barcelona which is out from 12.20 until 21.45. Budapest is a straight
return in the week except for Friday when it is back later.
There are some surprises thus far, with the main two relating to Paris
and Edinburgh.
The first Edinburgh out is 08.40 (EDI originating) and the first Paris
is 07.55 (seems to be operated by the inbound DTM). I am not sure
what business pax will make of this but less than ideal although great
for UK based leisure pax (90 minutes extra in bed!!!).
I am sure adjustments to come but it looks a little light on last winter.

Palma was not operated last winter.
Easy have toyed with sending earlier EDI and GLA or being reliant on a turned round visitor over the last two years. It doesn't seem to dent loads too much.
Paris with one hour offset is though a different matter

The major surprise to me if those route closures are correct is Nice, me thinks it was easJet´s second international route after Amsterdam way back in 1996. There is a very large ex-pat community in the area. I would think another carrier would take a serious look at the route. As for Krakow it is not far from Katowice where Wizz fly to (they do not operate any routes from Krakow I think due to cost) so another daily service to Katowice could easily take up the slack. As for Alicante - Monarch looks the obvious choice to add a few more sectors plus they could look at Paphos as I know of quite a few people who live near Paphos but travel to Larnaca to use Monarch instead of easyJet.

If EZY drop PFO, that means we have 3 gaps in the 320 schedule. Wed/Fri/Sun. SSH and TLV are still operating, so still need 2 aircraft. Does this mean that they are going to use the 320 for shorter routes, or are we going to see either a) more SSH to make daily, b) a new route(s) to fill the gap?
If all those routes disappear for the winter thats quite a lot less than last year, NCE is a real surprise as thats one of the originals and has always been popular.

With the arrival of the first -300 easyJet launched Barcelona and Nice following on from Amsterdam.
From memory, Nice was served at it's peak, with 5 daily return flights? I was on one of the first flights to Nice, we spent the day walking the Monaco GP circuit via an obscenely cheap Ł9 day return!

If this is the case, what are Wizz Air up to? There seems to be a lot of route changing and based aircraft changing going on around their network at present. Have they had any major management changes?

Been advertising the route to Venice, so why cancel....?
Gatwick have lots of borrowed cash, let us hope Wizz stay.

WIZZ
If they moved to Gatwick they would definitely get easyItus. Nearly 40 easy aircraft based - dominant position, heard rumours of inquiry regarding dominant position - now that tells you something!

I cant see Wizz moving to Gatwick, I think the question is how much will EZY pull out of Luton. This combined with if it will be still called that this time next year!
Easyjet
easyJet has drawn up plans to drop the easy name if it cannot resolve a bitter row with the airline’s founder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the Times reports. A board member told the newspaper: ‘You would expect us to have looked at this and we have. We do not want to lose the easy name but if you are facing a flood you put up flood barriers.'
A bitter dispute between Sir Stelios and the airline exploded again on Friday, when he resigned from the board. He said he had stepped down to speak freely about his concerns with the way the company was being run. ‘The gag is off,’ he said.
He has accused Andy Harrison, the chief executive who will leave the airline next month, of pursuing a reckless expansion programme and buying too many aircraft. The company has rejected the claim, saying Sir Stelios agreed to all aircraft deals and the commercial strategy along with the rest of the board. It also pointed out that easyJet was one of the few airlines to remain profitable during the recession.
