LUTON - 6
A "W" is what's known as a W-pattern routing, ie, the aircraft flies a route starting and finishing at another base.
Eg, aircraft based at Gatwick flies to Palma, then to Luton (the middle of the "W"), then back to Palma, and finally back to home base at Gatwick.
That way flights from 2 UK airfields to a common destination are accomplished in the same day using 1 aircraft (and most likely 1 crew on this type of routing).

A "W" relates to a flight being operated by a non based plane.
ie The ZB871 flight from Luton to Palma on a Saturday is made by a Gatwick based a/c.
The A300 operates LGW-PALMA-LTN-PALMA-LGW.
Hope it makes sense!
Sorry Wycombe both answered at the same time!!!

Ryanair have a lot of new planes to find homes for and are always threatening to pull out of airports. No reason to think that those tactics have not been played at Luton in recent time. We will base more, but you have to subsidies us, if not we will pull the entire fleet.
No doubt the amount of money an airport actually makes from a Ryanair operation is somewhat less than other incumbent airlines?
For an airport to be profitable, does not necessarily mean that you need millions of passengers, it all depends on subsidies and how much the passengers spend in the tinminal etc.
I am sure that the airport would welcome easyJet adding to their based fleet, rather than more Ryanair airframes?
Mind you, the airport seems to be under a 'care & maintenance' programme in preparation for being handed back to LBC, no other noticeable infrastructure upgrades seem imminent.

When you think of it - isnt it wierd that we call them W patterns?
LTN PMI LTN should be an I pattern, surely, and LTN PMI BHX PMI LTN should be a V pattern
Ha ha - I am just be pedantic, but when you look at the pattern a W makes, it is more like LTN PMI BHX IBZ LGW

Ryanair At Luton Etc
Hi Buster
You are absolutely right, Ryanair I understand would base more aircraft at Luton but the airport - quite rightly in my humble opinion - say you must pay the going rate. I have it on good authority that Ryanair passengers spend the least at Luton and probably most other airports so not much chance of making up the lost revenue of landing fees, etc.
Glad to see Monarch upping there winter schedules from Luton with Alicante returning for the winter especially as easy do not seem to be operating there from Luton this winter, also Gibraltar up to six times weekly. I have used the Gib service a number of times and it seems to me it is well patronised with passenger numbers well up on last year.
Just returned from a trip to the old country - by car - very enjoyable (the car journey that is) - had a lovely meal at Limoges airport on a terrace overlooking the ramp - and yes there was aircraft movements - but for those moaning about security etc. at UK airports took the ferry from Portsmouth to Cherbourg (a rip off I might add) the security was incredible - open the car bonnet etc. so please do not think that airport security takes the brunt in the UK. By the way drove straight on the ferry at Calais after UK passport check - what a difference!

BAA airports strike; don't know if Luton is spinning good PR but almost every report about the proposed strike at BAA airports shows Luton as being a place to send re-scheduled flights, Ok Manchester and Prestwick as well (Birmingham strangely not so...)
We all know overnight stop overs are a big no no but how much flex could Luton handle during 8AM to 10PM, quite a bit I feel, even if it was repositioning of a proportion of EZY/RYR programs?
If it does go ahead then the VVIP traffic must be worried as runway slots must come into force.
LCY operators will be seeing this as a goldmine, I know LGW will help as much as it can.
Could even take me back to the time I was in short trousers and LHR was fogged out and Sabena/Swissair/Lufthansa/Iberia/Aer Lingus were parks on half stands, wing tip to wing tip. I'm sure a couple of ex ATC controllers working that day can remember the fun???!

I understand that the poor relationship between Luton airport and easyJet has moved on? Now like 'heavy petting'! New management and a somewhat new focus toward thier homeLand?
........as for Ryanair, superbly brilliant at what they do...smoke and mirrors comes to mind!

Hopefully, easy won't implement another 20% cut in services for S11, as they did this year. Stability, and preferably a bit of growth at LTN, would be great, but don't hold your breath. Some 34% reduction has been seen from them in the last couple of years.
A couple of summer routes from Flybe perhaps ?

Im expecting some growth as well for EZY, especially if the relationship has thawed somewhat. Luton seems to be somewhat of a testing ground for regional routes, so Im expecting to see something more experimental routes wice when the time comes. Turkey and maybe Tunisia come to mind for next summer.

Luton might well be well over a million passengers light compared with its peak but the morning traffic queue at 5:30 today extended all the way back to the bridge over the A505.
It is clear to me that the traffic lights in the central area still can’t cope with the lighter traffic conditions that the reduced passengers numbers have brought to the airport.

Introduction of Road Safety Enforcement Penalty Charge
Introduction of Road Safety Enforcement Penalty Charge
Published: 18 August 2010
From 23rd August, an £80 penalty charge will be introduced at London Luton Airport for drivers who stop their vehicles to drop off or pick up passengers on the approach roads, roundabout, or bus lane leading up to the Airport terminal.
The penalty charge will be reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days. This charge will not benefit the Airport financially. It is intended to stop the current practice of drivers picking up or setting down passengers in unauthorised areas, which poses a risk both to the safety of passengers and that of other road users, as well as causing congestion and disruption to traffic. The penalty charge will be strictly enforced with mobile CCTV cameras.
London Luton Airport would like to remind passengers to use the drop off and pick up facilities provided. For those wishing to drop-off immediately outside the terminal, the drop-off zone is conveniently located at a cost of £1 for 10 minutes. Alternatively one hour free parking is provided in the mid term car park for the purposes of drop off and pick up. A free, five minute bus transfer from the mid term car park to the terminal operates every fifteen minutes.
