I see a new timetable has been introduced for Luton Airport Parkway. From Today the train operator Southeastern will join First Capital Connect and East Midland Trains allowing direct access to exotic places like Ashford International and Opington.

Just had a quick look at National Rail Enquiries - Luton Airport Parkway Train Times which shows 19 departures in the next hour.

Passengers using Luton Airport have never had a bigger choice of stations to get them to and from home.

New Service

Heard a very strong rumour that El Al are to commence a six times weekly service to Tel Aviv commencing in May with Boeing 767s. If true it will put a few peoples noses out at a certain airport in Essex!

Would make some sense given the location of El Al's core market in London, but does LTN have the ability for some sort of enhanced security ?
If a baggage handler is known to wave placards calling UK soldiers butchers, I imagine El Al management will want to be a little bit cautious on this

would also make sense as thomson are withdrawing their tel aviv service in a couple of weeks
as the tel aviv flights are already operating from luton, surely the extra security measures are already in place?

El Al is a much bigger target than Thomson.

Drop Your Family Off At The Airport - "That will be £1 please!"

Anyone else seen this on the airports website?

Once the new "improved" drop-off zone opens at the end of April, Luton Airport have decided to charge you £1 for the privilege of using the facility!

If you don't fancy that, and want to annoy your friends and family as you drop them off. Drop them off at the mid-stay car-park and they can bus it to the terminal free of charge!

The airport sees us passengers as walking money boxes again! Great move Luton! [NOT]

Thought this was a wind up but it is true. Standby for a mass increase in drop offs and pick ups from the roundabout. Standby for longer queues through the tunnel as people look for a £1 coin.

Grrr

With the BAA in financial meltdown, is this yet another operator moving due the lack of subsidies from Heathrow underpinning cheap deals over in Essex?

Like it or loathe it, airports have to encourage more folk to use public transport (can I assume the £1 tinminal tax will be reinvested into making the airport greener)?

Bring plenty of change when coming to Luton!

Luton is clearly taking a leaf out of the Ryanair book.

£1 for a drop off followed by a £1 for a trolley. Oh and £3 per passenger to beat the queue at security and another £1 for a plastic bag to get your liquids through.

Obviously not that strong a rumour as it was reported on the Stansted thread on the 20th March & the flights were already on the EL AL website then!

From The Jewish Chronicle

Candice Krieger
March 25, 2009

EL AL is launching a daily flight from Luton to Tel Aviv. The service will start from May, the JC has learned.

Uri Danor, CEO, UK, acknowledged that the additional six-times-a-week service will suit travelers who live in north London and have access to train service First Capital Connect, which runs directly from the City to Luton Airport Parkway station.

He said: “Luton will be much more convenient for these people. It’s easier than getting to Stansted We think it will be very well-received.” EL AL will no longer be flying from London Stansted once the Luton service starts.

Mr Danor acknowledged that it was a difficult time for the industry, with increasing competition from other airlines - BMI is now flying from Heathrow to Tel Aviv and easyJet are rumoured to be launching a direct service.

LTN must have pinched El Al from STN at the very last minute considering how the extra STN services were loaded

A very good catch for Luton though

Perhaps it's a blessing for STN as the extra security and associated extra Policing costs maybe didn't make it a cost effective operation for the airport. Would the same apply at LTN I wonder?

From the airport's website....

EL AL launches flights from London Luton
Published: 26 March 2009

London Luton Airport is pleased to announce the launch of EL AL flights from London Luton to Tel Aviv. Israel’s flag carrier will operate the service 6 times a week with flights due to begin from Sunday 3rd May 2009.

London Luton Airport Managing Director, Glyn Jones, said "We are delighted EL AL has chosen London Luton for the new Tel Aviv service. The airport offers exceptional convenience to passengers, with improved road access and a great rail service running from central London to Luton Airport Parkway in 20 minutes. We will provide EL AL passengers with a fast and efficient airport experience and a choice of products and services to enhance their journey."

Uri Danor, EL AL CEO, UK, Ireland and Northern Europe said: "We are excited about our new venture and are working closely with London Luton to launch the service in May. The flight timings are particularly good for passengers as our departures and arrivals will be at times when the airport is at its quietest enabling swift boarding and disembarkation. We will be using B767 aircraft offering both Business and Economy cabins with full meals and drinks services. The services are ideal for both leisure and business travellers."

Flights will leave London Luton from Sunday to Thursday at 12.15 and arrive in Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport at 19.05. On Fridays the departure is at 09.45 with arrival at 16.35. The return flight will leave Tel Aviv Sunday to Thursday at 07.30 arriving at 10.50. On a Friday the flight arrives at London Luton at 08.50.

Grrr

What a coup for Luton, the interesting thing is that more airlines could also follow according to good rumours!

I guess the fact that airlines now have to pay to fly from Essex rather being paid (or heavily subsidised)!

EL AL moves into Luton-26 March, 2009
