The Grahame-White Type 10 Charabanc. It set a World record at Hendon on 22nd September 1913 with pilot and seven passengers remaining aloft for 17 min 25.4 sec.

I agree, but the name is none too flattering if it what I think it is, the Gippsland GA200 Fatman ??

Open House if correct please.

India Four Two
21st Jun 2012, 17:53
SincoTC,

Yes the Fatman - this one:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/india42/GA-200FatmanIMG_0175a.jpg

Effectively an all-new, enlarged Pawnee. I don't know the derivation of the name. It makes a great glider towplane. An interesting feature is that the pilot's seat and controls are slightly offset, so there is room for a (small) passenger on the right. Sort of a one-and-a-half seater.

SincoTC has declared Open House.

India Four Two,

The box on top of the panel is a FLARM. Developed in Switzerland, it is a kind of 'poor mans' TCAS. The FLARM units all broadcast to each other and a display on the box indicates when one is getting too close and where it is relative to yourself. Often mandated for glider competitions in this part of the world.

'866

Edited to correct country of origin and apologise to India Four Two for having a blonde moment and missing the fact it was a clue. Think I've had too much sun!

India Four Two

'866.

That was a rhetorical question. ;) A very poorly worded clue. All of the fleet at Omarama has FLARM installed.

There is a very good simulation of how FLARM would have helped possibly prevent a mid-air in the US at this link: GliderPilot.org - Parowan Mid-air Simulation (http://www.gliderpilot.org/Flarm-ParowanMidairSimulation)
Luckily both pilots survived.

Fitter2

but the ambition was about a quarter million miles!! :)To the moon....and hopefully back, eh? Have you seen the movie Apollo 18? SincoTC
25th Jun 2012, 06:42
I haven't seen that movie yet mate, but no doubt it'll do the rounds on the "haunted fish-tank" before long.

Not canvas though; in fact it was a much heavier construction than Apollo due to the requirement for Air at normal atmospheric pressure for safety reasons, rather than the American choice of pure Oxygen at lower pressure, which cost the lives three astronauts in a ground test.

Russian cosmonaut's vehicle
Edited to say that you got it mate!

It is the Soviet lunar lander - the Russian counterpart of the American LM Lunar Module. The LK ('Lunniy korabl' - lunar craft)

I'll try and create the scene...

The American astronauts go into this crater - completely dark of course, and for some reason they have this flashing strobe light (don't torches work on the moon?) and regularly light their path. Lots of grunting and panting as they make their way down into the crater and then "pop" goes strobe and the full screen shows the Cosmonauts skull. Shock value - but I did feel a sphincter loosen a little.

Noyade has control http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:www.pprune.org/get/images/smilies/thumbs.gifThanks mate, but I can't accept that on the grounds I watch B-grade horror. :)

NOT a challenge, just out of interest for anyone. Recognise any of the interiors? Quiz from the mid-90's...

Breakfast is over - back to work. :)

The nose curvature, perspex squares and sparse controls - are we still in glider mode?

I'm thinking Waco?

Waco Glider Walk Around (http://www.arcair.com/awa01/501-600/awa588-WacoGlider-Boyd/00.shtm)

Why the wood chock between the rudder pedals and the steering/control wheel? Funny how the brain works but it just reminded me (and completely unrelated) of the Waterfall investigation.

Waterfall rail accident - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterfall_rail_accident)

Marks near the deadman's pedal indicated some drivers were wedging a conveniently sized signalling flag to defeat the deadman's pedal

Of far more interest to me is the scenery. My eyes tended to focus on your countryside and historic buildings (except in the Women's Beach Volleyball). Simply beautiful looking country. The D.H.71 was built in 1926 to investigate high-speed monoplane flight and to serve as a test bed for developing the D.H. Gipsy engine, a follow-on power plant to the Cirrus. For the era it employed an amazing degree of streamlining and was actually built "around" (rather than for) its test pilot, Hubert Broad Only two were built - G-EBQU and G-EBRV. The first and former was sent to Australia in 1930 and registered VH-UNH to Frank.K. Bardsley of Sydney on 20 January of that year. It crashed on 17 September 1930 whilst practicing for an air race after suffering engine failure on take-off, killing the pilot, Dave Smith, 20, registered owner of the Ryan B-1 G-AUIZ and the youngest commercial pilot in Australia at that time.

New challenge will be posted later.

Well done Terrence! I thought the French placards might add some uncertainty, but they didn't fool you. ;)

It is Brett Emeny's immaculate ex-Swiss Air Force T11, ZK-RVM

I took the photo while taxying for takeoff at Tauranga in February, for my second-ever Vampire flight, after a gap of over forty years. I mentioned to a friend that the cockpit seemed much more cramped than I remembered. He very charitably suggested that perhaps I was flying a 7/8ths scale Vampire.:)

You have control.

The altimeter appears to be in feet. Is that an important clue?
