But this looks more like two abreast...
Experimental, carbon fiber lining, (a fuel cap in the cockpit?), an odd-looking plate on the right (canopy mount?), one throttle and the hint of a prop in the front.
And a puppet. :)

I agree, but if you look at the rudder pedals (and the mass of junk and wires on the right: I don't think you're supposed to put a right leg there...) it looks like it's a two abreast...

Military aircraft Mel?

Would by identifying the high-wing airliner in the background help solve this?

MReyn24050
23rd Jul 2011, 23:43

This one is not military and I do not think the identity of the aircraft in the background will help.
Your man Cadel Evans was brilliant today and well and truly deserves the yellow jersey.

Your aircraft Mel, many built?

MReyn24050
24th Jul 2011, 13:16
Graeme
Not sure of the number actually built. It is a Kit Plane. There is a clue to the aircraft in the photograph.

HappyPass
24th Jul 2011, 21:50
Now.
The airliner in the background is definitely a turboprop, we can see the prop blades. It also looks military (dark grey). I'll say 4 blades (and not 6).
It is not an Antonov 140 (wrong air intakes), nor a Fokker 50 (wing is too high), nor a Fokker F27 (which has no air intakes on the wing root), nor a Dornier 328 (wing root too short)

What's left? ATR42 & 72 and EADS-CASA CN-235 (not C-295 because of blade number).
Now, checking the various liveries on JetPhotos.net and comparing, I think I can read "Armee de l'air" on the fuselage.

So I'll say the turboprop is a CN-235, the clue is the "frog" and the kit plane is French.
Am I right?

Edit: after looking through all of these Experimental/Kitbuilt Piston Airplane Manufacturers - Used French Airplane Sales at GlobalPlaneSearch.com (http://www.globalplanesearch.com/france/experimental/piston/manufacturers.htm) I think I can safely call it a day.... :bored:

MReyn24050
24th Jul 2011, 23:18
Happy Pass. Some good detective work there. You are correct the aircraft in the background is a CN-235 belonging to the Armee de l'air. You are also correct that the frog is the clue and there is a French connection with the challenge aircraft but it is not French design and it is not on the list you give a link to.

Thanks you Happy Pass. I did state one thing incorrectly ie. Piston Engine in fact this aircraft is powered by a Diesel Engine
“Big Frog is the brainchild of three pilots–Frank Doyen, Mario Soave and Willy Gruhier – who dreamed up the project in 2005. They wanted to prove that a high-performance aircraft with a Diesel engine could win the prestigious Reno National Championship Air Races, which take place every September in the Nevada desert.”

Evening Ken,

A bit late getting on tonight and think I've missed you. I saw your first challenge image before I left work and thought that I would start by looking at Oshkosh after I'd had something to eat!

Now, the expanded view makes it a lot easier and I'm fairly certain it's the Pro Composites Personal Cruiser. Not found your cockpit photo, but the one I did find from the 2010 Fly-in has nearly the same instrumentation and joystick.

Open House please if correct as I've got a full day in the workshop tomorrow, so wouldn't be able to monitor!

Sleep well :)

Its no AKAflieg (Mü) glider, but was a single seater. 300 built in Germany, 150 in France and a few in Italy. France and Italy had a different make and model.

The chiefdesigner and company owner was the former chief of Akaflieg München. The company existed from 1951 till 2006
