This Plane was designed by my father and was called Sun Ray. There was a two seater and a single seater. It could land/take off on water. It could be taken apart and slipped into a trailer in 20mins and it also could be flown by remote control. It was made of compsite and we had to line it with aluminum foil to be seen on radar. This picture is from 1987 ish. The Smithsonian has one in their archives and when My father sold the business and the remaining aircrafts and designs the sale had alot of Gov't attachments on who and where it could be sold too. He tried to sell it to the Gov't to be drone type aircraft plus it could be crated and air dropped assembled very quickly. They said there was no need for an aircraft like this......my how times have changed ;o)

Yes, as can be seen from the photograph the pilot was offset to port and the canopy constructed accordingly. The aircraft was not produced in large numbers and used by both Lufthansa and the Luftwaffe.

Back to the subject, many of us who operated DA20s at our flight schools feel that the Continentel engine and a fixed pitch prop have spoiled the aircraft, it was great training for the student to start day one with a CS prop, and once we learned all the tricks our Rotax engines were good for 3500hrs {on condition} The version with the 100 H/P Rotax is a great little airplane.

Mel, I'm probably barking up the wrong tree, but without instrumentation I'm wondering if this is an early jet?
Or, deviating off track again, would it be a Caproni N1?

MReyn24050
8th May 2011, 18:13
Ken. You are not deviating off track. It is indeed the cockpit of the Caproni Campini N.1.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c67/sabamel/Caproni_foto.jpg

However As designed by Campini, the aircraft did not have a jet engine in the sense that we know them today. Rather, a conventional 500 kW (670 hp) Isotta Fraschini L. 121/R.C. 40 piston engine was used to drive a compressor, which forced air into a combustion chamber where it was mixed with fuel and ignited. The exhaust produced by this combustion was to drive the aircraft forward. Campini called this configuration a "thermojet," but the term "motorjet" is in common usage today for this arrangement since thermojet is now used to refer to a particular type of pulsejet (an unrelated form of jet engine). It has also been described as a ducted fan.[1]
