You can get an accommodation in the TYO area without a resident card but it is a bit of a drill. You cannot have a resident card and fly on this contract. It is not allowed. The accommodation allowance is 200,000 JPY/month. Only certain areas are currently approved by the airline for residency. Pilots fly out of both NRT and HND. It is sometimes very hectic, finishing duty at one airport and having duty the next day out of the other. probably the biggest problem facing the pilots today. They're 'working' on the issue.

What about their Japanese national or foreign but perm.resident pilots? There must've been a way for them getting the job initially, right? Or perhaps they got transferred internally from ANA?

Just to be clear, any comparisons to Japanese mainline ANA pilots would not be relevant to this conversation. There are a few non-mainline Japanese pilots working for Air Japan. They are living in a different world from foreign pilots working on the commuting contract. True, Air Japan is recruiting a handful of Japanese DECs each year but not enough to hinder the upgrade program. That continues as it did pre-Covid. Initially Air Japan accepted applications for foreign residents. That is no longer happening. Now Air Japan will not hire foreign a foreign resident. Before you ask,...when you work in Japan for a while, you know not to ask the 'why' question. It is, what it is.

Right. My guess would be that they are just not bothered with labour certification and sorting out local taxation, pension, etc., at least not keen on being more involved than it's absolutely necessary. Union issues could be an other thing, perhaps? In any case it seems to be highly discriminative, but as you said it's Japan...

At the moment i see both BKK and Seoul flights are departing from NRT only and not HND. Singapore flight launches soon too and is also from NRT.

I would take whatever Blackace27 has to say with a very large grain of salt. Don't have to look back very far into their previous comments to see they are affiliated with one of the recruitment agencies. If that doesn't reek of desperation I don't know what does. There is a reason ~70% of the previous pilot cohort have decided not to return.

he never hides he's affiliated with them , when he certainly had the option to do that . i find that trustworthy . hes also not hiding the issues , which i counter him , that maybe those issues no longer exist.( purely because AJX now has to base only 2 aircrafts , not because AJX loves their pilots more than say QR) . reason why people dont go back to their ex-employers after working a long time with them is because human life is about exploring new things . countries , foods , movies , music and airlines. how many people move back into a house they once lived in .. 70% never do .

theres no BEST contract/Airline out there . its what suits your needs best at this point in your life.

I suggest you do some homework. They operate flights on behalf of ANA so have more than 2 aircraft. Keep in mind too that the bus ride between the 2 airports is not classified as duty. I can assure you that the reason ~70% haven't returned has nothing to do with the movies or food they like. The reasons are the pay stinks, you'll spend 18 night a month in a tiny Japanese hotel room and be treated like a 2nd class citizen. Maybe you can ask Blackace27 how the pilots were treated when covid hit. Don't say you weren't warned. Suggest you brush up on your grammar and punctuation.

Ah, a perfectionist, I see. I appreciate all your suggestions, and an extra thanks for the knowledge I lacked about them operating ANA flights. You can do better than warn me, good Sir; guide me on what my other options are.

I have 6000 total and 3000 PIC on the A320, with a U.K. passport and an ICAO license. Where can I take this and go directly to a Wide-Body aircraft, enjoying 12+2 days off a month? Money not an issue. I'm fine with narrow body too , if i can get 15 on 15 off .

I don't think a 12+2 or 15/15 exists anywhere atm other than corporate. You may find some airlines saying they do but once you start, it's usually a fantasy.

The Chinese used to offer reverse bases in LHR, FRA etc but they were always "full" when you finished training. Korean Air offered a commuting contract but would fail more than 40% of new joiners and after training would fire anyone at the drop of a hat. Lion Air and Garuda used to offer a "Bali" base that actually never existed.

I was hired once by a cargo operator in Malaysia promising 20/10 roster. That lasted 1 month and turned into 50/10. The only promises they delivered was my pay.

Nothing is as it seems.

You are 100% correct on both points. I am indeed with an agency and you should always take anything you read on the interweb with a grain of salt. I only comment on some items (very rarely) on PPRUNE if I see an obvious misunderstanding. I understand that by doing so I open myself up to to pilots who would like to take a shot at me. It's OK. I have thick skin and I know that pilots may have some pretty bad experiences with airlines or agencies that make them highly skeptical. No argument there. However, feel free to ask openly any question you have. I'm open to answer truthfully. Others may have the same question and it might help them decide.

I may not be able to post again as the website has a prohibition against agents posting here. That's fine I understand. Just for the record I had no intention of recruiting for or defending AJX. I only wanted to correct misunderstandings. You have every right to be skeptical. That is a sign of positive critical thinking on your part. I'll see what happens with the moderators.

From which source did you get 200,000 ¥ for accommodation? Both CAE and CREW mention 100,000 ¥.

Standby for updated websites. It's 200,000 JPY/month. This just went into effect. However, the initial cost of getting into an apartment is significantly higher due to security deposits etc.

Just FYI because of the juggling back and forth between the two airports. selecting an apartment is a very tricky endeavor. Not many pilots have taken them up on the offer. If some way of reducing the juggling back and forth could be found (I believe it is possible but Air Japan is slow to buy into it) more pilots could choose to rent an apartment and their lives would (theoretically at least) be easier.

BTW thank you moderators for allowing me to continue to post. You will not see me promoting. Just answering questions and commenting on what I think are misunderstandings.

As someone going through this process, it's good to get clarification directly from knowledgeable sources. I can understand both sides of this discussion. While being an agent may raise skepticism, your responses come across as honestly striving to provide facts. And as all of us just want the best information to make decisions, transparency is appreciated.

Hey Kapt320, could I DM you? I'm just starting my application process with CAE (haven't filled any forms yet), would be great to get some advice from you (and if I should continue with CAE).
Thanks!

Hi Zoot ,
im really novice at all this stuff ( first application in over a decade ). I had applied to both agencies at different times , it was merely a matter of chance which one contacted me first .Since you cannot have two interviews scheduled by two different agencies for one Airline , i withdrew one application.

Thanks Kapt320! Any pointers for the interview and sim assessment? I've been Airbus 320 my entire career, but I know I would love to put in the effort for a change of type too.
Thanks and good luck for your training in Singapore/Japan!
