Thumbs up pay increase

guys, $5,000 in the philippines is already a big deal! no kidding. by philippine standard five grand is helluva lot of money! of course it's still not that big if you compare it to other foreign airlines. but man, you are in the philippines!!! be happy with that. there's nothing like working in your own country. and with that kind of money i am pretty sure you and your family will have a good life.

cheers!

Be Thankful

You are right, $5000 in the Phils is a lot of money. Lets hope that what comes next is the eventual retirement of "kalbo" and his classmates. Then pilots might be treated in a lot better way. Money is not everything, how we get treated means a lot.

Pilots who are still inside, be thankful, if not for those who went out, you will still be paid and treated tha same way as before.

Pilots on the outside, we should help those inside if they want a better life.

is this figure net????

Yeah, that would be nice to know considering there are still no tax breaks
with you guys, if that would be net then inflation should not catch up within a year. But then other carriers will start paying more because they recognize
the experience of your pilots. Hence, the old stick and carrot game again.
You will make the same amount of money working only for 5 years outside compared to 15 years inside .....and you only fly 70-80 hours max a month.

life is full of tradeoffs.................

The carrot & the stick

Pilots in the domestic run including those in the A330 fly about 25 days in a month. The scheduling department & the chief pilots have an order from above to effect the 6 days work & 1 day off just like what the ground personnel do.

Pilots in the B744 get more days off.

So why was the increase not incorporated into the basic salary? This would have changed the whole ball game.

Some pilots outside work only 8 months to 9 months a year & get paid for the whole year.

India is now offering 45 days on, 45 days off!!!

My advise to pilots in PAL is to take it easy & do not push too hard.

But we are getting somewhere here.

And these changes were only effected when people leave. PAL is in such shortage of pilots that they are training wide body airbus pilots to fly the narrow body A320.

Don't kid yourself guys... $5000 a month is sh.. if a pilot is earning 2x somewhere else. Remember that the pilot in Asiana is doing the same job as the PAL pilot yet he gets $12k a month. OK so you say that it is a lower standard of living in RP.... so things should be cheaper..yes? NO... PAL passengers pay the same or MORE for the same flight. PAL pays in Pesos but charges paxs in USD. Please...... someone do the math for me!!! Foreign carriers pay their pilots more, their FAs more, their ground staff more...how do they turn a profit especially if PAL can do it for a whole lot less?? Does LT have a secret oil well somewhere? There is only one conclusion... LT is making a Fing fortune and screwing anyone that begs to work for him.
Someone tell JA that those that have left are not crying...!! I have a big smile on my face when I get my check every month.

from a grateful friend

there's something to be gleaned from the timing of PALs increase in pay for pilots.it's being given now that the Christmas holidays are coming and "family" reasons for why pilots dont want to leave becomes more apparent.ofcourse, what management has set out to do is promote this reason and stop the exodus (at least for the time being).we are thankful to our fellow pilots who have gone abroad to make our plight be known to all.this latest increase is their Christmas gift to us.
thank you sirs.

Thanks Guys!!

The $5,000 figure is net pay for wide body captains. And that computation is for flying 60 hours. Our A330 pilots fly more that that (90 to 100 hrs) so they earn more. Out here in PAL, the productivity pay will be more than our basic pay. PAL put it that way so that they do not have to pay big on retirement pay!!!! So expect to earn only half your usual pay when you go on vacation.

A lot of us are in a wait and see mode. I havn't talked to a lot of pilots yet but I guess no one will be leaving this year. I'll be spending christmas at home then start looking around once again as soon as the new year comes in.

Thanks to all the guys who left PAL. Without the pressure of PAL pilots resigning, we wouldn't have gotten this increase. It is still small but this would help those who still can't leave.

Leaving PAL our only weapon

LT doesn't want the union so it will cost him more.

Pilots do not have the bargaining power: our only weapon is to leave.

Unless PAL management changes its ways (that includes the arrogant way kalbo, JH & koyang conducts themselves), the exodus will continue.

Advance Merry X'mas to all!!!

Safe flying always!!!

Big big question: Who will fly these planes??!!!

PAL to get 8 wide-bodied planes for US, Europe

By Riza T. Olchondra
Inquirer
Last updated 02:33am (Mla time) 10/21/2006

PHILIPPINE Airlines (PAL) will buy or lease eight new wide-bodied planes from either Airbus or Boeing to expand its routes to the United States and Canada and resume flights to Europe, company officials said at the unveiling Friday of the carrier’s newest aircraft.
The introduction the Airbus A319-100 launched the modernization of the airline’s fleet of single-aisle aircraft as part of a P840-million refleeting program.
The single-aisle planes can serve domestic and Asia-Pacific routes.
PAL may spend about $200 million for each of the additional eight aircraft to be acquired, its officials said. It wants four to be delivered in 2008-09 and the remainder before the end of 2011, they said.
“We will borrow from banks,” PAL chairman Lucio Tan, the tobacco tycoon, told reporters when asked where the airline would get the money for the fleet expansion.
“We can get the support of the export credit agencies, or US Eximbank, or we can do an operating lease,” PAL president and chief operating officer Jaime Bautista said in a separate interview.
Bautista said the PAL board would decide by yearend on what aircraft to order.
Bautista earlier said PAL was in the final phase of talks with three European export credit agencies on a loan of up to $600 million to fund its refleeting program.
PAL has nine wide-bodied planes flying to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco in the US and Vancouver in Canada. Five are Boeing 747-400s and four are Airbus 340-300s.
It will choose between the Airbus 340-600 and the Boeing 777-300 to fly to other international destinations, company officials said.
Bautista said PAL might fly to Seattle and San Diego initially. He added, “We’re looking at flying to [other cities in] California and ... to Europe.”
PAL stopped services to Europe in the late 1990s when it was hit by the Asian financial crisis and labor disputes.
It has slowly recovered through a restructuring program.

sounds like.................

I hope they realize that people are not as dumb as they seem, they can make all the press releases in the world but the underlying fact is that they still treat their drivers as c##p. work them long hours, and give false promises about retirement. You think all these management guys at the top will care when they retire? Cry me a river......

Did they mention that you can't buy planes of the shelves like items in a supermarket? It takes years from the time a plane is ordered till it finally gets delivered. To start new routes requires not only massive pull from the government but also a lot of lobbying to get back most of the routes it has lost years ago to other carriers.

Lufthansa et all will just not say, ok, you can have all your old routes back, they have invested too much time and money already. What about all your middle eastern carriers that use their hubs to haul traffic to and from europe at half of what PR will charge.

They should fix the mess inhouse first before even thinking about other markets, because by that time all the good guys will be gone.

more wide bodies? more routes?

don't hold your breath guys. this could be just a smokescreen PAL is using to hide the real situation inside . in the meantime, make the most of what you have. enjoy your $5000 salary, right planestupid? build up time and experience, and if you think you're ready to face the challenges of intl flying, mix with different cultures, then just pack up and leave.

cheers!!!

pal prefers to hire DECs for the A320s, not the widebodies. there's a long line of folks waiting for the widebody captaincies.

hope the additional widebodies are true. but as you all know, in pal, if it ain't there yet, then it's not quite true.

but i think the purchase plan for additional widebodies had been stated in the medium-term plan since 2005. and yes, they need at least two years to order which is why they say they plan to announce the order by end oy year 2006 for IOE on 2008.

...unless they plan to buy secondhand ones like the botched deals with ANA's and Air NewZealand's 744s...
