Danger New world record

Records are made to be broken !!!
Why wasting time, money and energy for that?
Just to have your picture in the first page of the local newspaper, then after a week everybody has forgotten you
Moreover you just risk your life in marginal conditions

sound !!!!

I just visited the "Round the world record attempt" site. This is the first time I have had a look with my speakers turned on. OMG I am now convinced this site is contrived to extort money. I did find reference to the 2007 record attempt so I guess its an open ended plan.

I also found that the News 9 Interview is more entertaining with the Sound turned on

But if you want REAL entertainment check out the other video clips on his Web Site - Johans Dream They take a while to download but well worth the wait

Night vision goggles???

Well, I thought you had to have some kind of check-out to use NVG VFR in a helicopter. I remember Bell offering an NVG transition course i Florida.

Having read through this entire thread - with many laughs - my interest was awakened. The guy is apparently from my country, so...

Anyway, I found a reference to his record flight in an R44 on a website marketing NVG. Turns out he used NVG all the way (or claims he did).

Any comments? Can anyone jack on an NVG-kit on their flight helmets and take off in total darkness? My guess is not, but I don't really know.

perfrej... - Glad you're enjoying the thread so far - Bit of an epic isn't it

Lets take away ( for now ) what I believe to be the scam side of all this where the Chief Pilot is trying to raise the $$$$ so he can set himself a world record - on the pretence that its all for charity - I think that point has been flogged to death now ...
( Other than to add that his recent US Coast to Coast "record" was also supposed to be a fund raiser for those "poor starving children" yet there is absolutely NO mention of how much cash was raised and paid to HIS "Charity" ) - I digress ....

... I personally think there is more chance of him killing himself, plus anyone else unfortunate enough to have been persuaded by him to fly with him, than achieve a Round the World record time in a helicopter.

Having read ALL of the posts here and a lot more besides, his demonstrations of poor planning, going inadvertent IMC with very low fuel, reliance on cheap off the shelf NVG's, inexperienced crew, possible unfamiliarity with aircraft, to name but a few, clearly show that this whole project is just another crash waiting to happen.

The lack of funding, or "sponsorship" is probably a good indicator that I'm not the only one who thinks this.

They STILL haven't given up !

Another New Year and STILL our intrepid heroes are intent on achieving this "World Record" - Fastest around the world in a helicopter

About the only thing that hasn't changed is the fact that "the team" ( i.e. Johan Nurmi ) desperately needs someone to pay for his little venture, and is trying his best to get people to "sponsor" his attempt on the back of a charity appeal for starving children.

The aircraft has changed - now they state they will be using a Bell 430.

The start date has changed again - Now its June 2007.

Even the stated beneficiaries of the "Fund Raiser" has changed - originally they were "Under Privileged" American kids, now it's the starving children of Africa !

The team's Web site has been re-vamped : World record Helicopter Team
.. complete with real CHEESEY music, ... and now also has links to the re-vamped "Charity" web site : Help Starving Children,
which sounds so much more welcoming than the previous "Christian Foundation for Unprivileged Children" organisation.

There are now some heart wrenching pics of those starving little ones - to help encourage you to send your cash

If you want my advice - DON'T DO IT - Not without reading all of this thread and appreciating that the Founder / President of the "Charity" is the chap who desperately needs to raise funds to make the record attempt, i.e, Johan Nurmi

If you want to give to a childrens charity there are PLENTY of genuine ones out there that you will have already heard of !

Strangley there is still NO News on any of Johan's web sites of how much cash he has donated to ANY charity whatsoever, on the back of his previous record attempts that were also supposed to have benefitted those poor, underprivileged, frozen little children

Ok you've got a point there - No offence intended to our American friends, perhaps "cheesey" isn't the correct word.

If the US National Anthem is being used to try and portray the "US Acadamy of Aviation" ( Run by a Swede ) as some kind of "All American Hero" organisation, perhaps "disgusting" would be a better description.

Nurmi sounds more from Finland, not Sweden...

Thanks for the warning about the music coconutty, unfortunately I was a little slow in turning the sound off on my computer. To combat this, I remembered the words to the American Anthem that Borat used at the rodeo in his film, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.!
(To complete the joke, as reported in a paper http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/xp-16655 )

I also remembered that it is in fact an English tune! (To Anacreon in Heaven)
Even better still is the fact it is an English drinking song!

So when you next hear the Spam Anthem start off,

O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,

Just think to yourselves,
Not really mate, I seem to have drunk one too many!!!

Anyway, to leave the nation alone.....

http://www.worldrecordhelicopterteam.com/page.php?21

The World Record Helicopter Team is now offering services to manufacturers. If you have a helicopter you would like to set a record with, World Record Helicopter Team can offer pilots to set any kind of speed record. We now have 3 Current record from coast to coast with the R-22 Beta II, R44 Raven, and a world record with Bell OH-58.
I wondered if anyone has taken them up on the offer of using someone elses aircraft to get them selves in the record books.

Surely if you want to save starving children, the money spent in getting a record off the ground and succesfully completed would be far greater than that gained in sponsorship.

Mmmm, big company looking for a bigger profile.... Now what do i do?
Pay for an orphanage or hostel to be built.....or
Sponsor someone to have a great time getting into the record books with no risk to themselves?

Are they allowed to use that picture of a BritMil Gazelle as a header?

Even so, starving children and a machine of war... don't really go together do they?

Reflecting on earlier searches,

google ""christian foundation for starving children"
Results 1 - 4 of 4 for "christian foundation for starving children". (0.91 seconds)

Still all run by the World Record Helicopter Team!!

Anyone else see something strange about this pie chart showing where the money goes?

http://www.worldrecordhelicopterteam.com/page.php?22

Yep, thats correct, the 95% is written in blue!!

Also, to show $600,000 as a percentage, is the total pie value therefore finite?

Have the team actually raised a total of $12 million?
5%=600,000; 100% = 5%x20 = 600,000x20 = $12,000,000

.... Doesn't look like the Record trip is up yet though !

The WRHT ( sounds almost hormonal doesn't it ? ) Web Site might be up and running again, but that's more than can be said for the actual "Round The World Record" breaking journey.....

..... although I concede there has been a massive increase in the amount of sponsorship money raised - It's gone up by a whopping 16.6% !

( For Sid - here's the maths : $600 initially raised by donations from Johan and his chums, with a further $100 raised from the new web site designer so : 100 / 600 x 100 = 16.66' % )

Only another $11,999,300 to go to reach the target then !

At least they can increase their total spend on "promotional Purposes" to 35 bucks now

It seems they're not too sure of their routing either. On the page with the pie chart they say they'll take off from French Valley airport, track up the West coast, through Alaska, Russia, blah blah blah. In the "Sponsorship Proposal" document, they're taking off from LAX, heading up the East coast, through Canada, Greenland, blah, blah, blah.

I've never attempted a round-the-world record, I have to admit, but I would have thought that a fairly fundamental decision, one you would take very early on, would be which way around the world you're going to fly.

Soon be Christmas.......

It will soon be that very Christian time of year so I am keeping a close eye on things to see if there are any announcements from the team like there were around this time last year......

The decision as to which way round the world to go, will probably involve some in depth studies into the weather / climate / trade winds etc. etc.

Then again, if the rest of their planning is anything to go by, it could be a case of ... " Gee - another sponsor wants to lend us a helicopter - it's a type we're not familiar with, I wonder which way round the rotors turn - maybe we can go round the world the same way ?"

Meanwhile the latest donor ( Web Site designer ) has been busy.
There's now another "Charity" web site in addition to the original "Christian Foundation for Unpriviliged Children".
This one's called the "Christian Foundation for Starving Children" :
http://www.helpstarvingchildren.org/news.php
( Another warning to to turn your sound down or off before visiting )

Some interesting but not particularly new information on there :

The "charity" are no longer exclusively helping those poor, starving, frozen children, but have diversified and are now "helping" families ( two ) that are not doing well financially, living in a trailer park ( Perris, California ), an Orphanage in India, and some starving children in Africa - "It's not their fault they're hungry"

Best if all is a little snippet from the "Contact Us" page...

Good old Johan seems to have declared himself as a MINISTER :

..... now would that be a religous minister, or governmental ?
