Information:
The World Record Helicopter Team has teamed up with the Christian Foundation for Underprivileged Children and is planning to have a fundraiser. An around the world ‘world speed record’ helicopter flight, breaking the current record set in 1996. This fundraiser event will raise millions of dollars to improve the lives of needy children in impoverished areas throughout the United States.

Your donations are greatly appreciated and needed to support the Starving and Underprivileged children of the United States. Your Donation is Completely Tax Deductible.

The idea is that people or companies willing to donate money for this project get advertizing space on this website. Since this is a world record attempt with a good cause, it will get a lot of media attention. People will visit this website and it will create more traffic to your websites.

Johan Nurmi who is in charge of this project is an experienced helicopter pilot with 1 world record on his resume. The knowledge is the there, the motivation is there but we are still in need of funds. The World Record Helicopter Team needs at least $600.000 to make this possible, which means that if we can fill all of the advertizing space in the background, we're good to go.

Its always good to hear guys in our industry doing something to help others..... but just before you get too far down the road lads, take note that the current record doesn't go back to 1996.

Eastern Atlantic helis broke Ron Bower's time last year in a 500. About 18 days I seem to recall !

How much goes to the helicopter and crew to pay for the record, or is one's entire donation allocated for charity, and the record funded by a private source?

How wonderful that the richest nation in the world and the home of the free need a wizz-bang attempt on a world record to help "support the Starving and Underprivileged children of the United States"

Isn't the world speed record held by Simon Oliphant Hope, completed in June 2004 in a MD 500 ?

He is the MD of Eastern Alantic Helicopters UK.

My first thought when I saw this thread, totally without any justification on my part, was "Here we go again - another "Global Eagle" escapade but in a different guise" !

Already questions are being asked about the actual challenge - disputing current records, how much of any donation will actually get to the "charity", is the charity a worthy cause etc etc....

It just shows how much damage can be caused by a previous and ill fated expedition like that of the Global Eagle farce, to have prejuduced my views in this way.

Prejudices aside, and assuming this to be a genuine record attempt / charity fundraiser, then good luck to the team :ok:

If anyone is concerned about the welfare of children, then forget spending $500,000 on a 'platinum' corporate sponsor package with these fools and send your money to a charity that will help those countries that can't afford to feed their children.

Wizzard. You post as if you dont think thats possible. Believe me this country is no different than any other. There may be less starving kids here, but they are here.
Whos fault is it...? Im not one to blame the government because its not their job to raise some morons kids. Its a breakdown and transferance to the third world mentality that we need kids to guarantee they will take care of the old parents. The religions that tell you to go forth and breed (while preaching from the Gold filled pulpits). Throw in the fact that many poor breed rather than raise kids and then you have a few of the problems.
Now...Lets see a new record, someone gets fed, thats also a good thing.

And as a reply to the post above. The traffic on the website increased by 400% after Johan Nurmi took off for the US coast to coast record flight in a R44.
More information about that flight will come up on the website in a couple of days.
The last two days we have had more than 500 visits.

No mention of that in your post.

Also, what aircraft is going to be attempting to beat Simon Oliphant-Hope's record?

That statement combined by the fact the next statement says they will be in a Bell 430, is a receipe for someone getting killed....
430 is a sweet aircraft but not something for a couple Robbie types to tackle in IFR conditions....

So just to clarify - the web site says and you state that
Is the ".... $600 grand necessary ....." the amount needed to fund the venture - aircraft / crew / fuel / etc / etc, or is this the amount needed to be raised in total with 70% of the $600 grand ( $420 grand ) going to the charity ?

If the $600 grand is needed to fund the venture, then you would need to raise a total of $2 MILLION to get your 30% ( $600 grand ) :ooh:
and then 70% of that ( $1.4 million ) would go to the charity ??

Also - if $600 grand is needed to make the flight possible, this implies that the funds are to be raised before the venture commences.
Does this mean the charity will get its 70% before the team set off ?

Coconutty points out that the top ten donations (actually all of the donations) come to rather less than the cost of running a 'large turbine' (or turbo, whatever) helicopter for a single hour.
Note that:
John Nurmi (in charge of the project) donated $400
Michael Botner (the webmaster) donated $100
Which leaves $100 that has been donated by someone that hasn't admitted being involved with this doomed project.

This has got to be a complete scam - forget it folks! The paltry info on their web site gives it no credibility at all. Nothing about helo type, pilots' profiles, detail of route, why they think they can break the record etc etc. Not even reference to the fact that the guy behind it, Johan Nurmi, apparently owns the USA Academy flying school.

So much reads oddly to me. According to press articles, this Johan Nurmi has over 7000 hours of time from 18 years in the Swedish Army. Doesn't sound like it from reading a few paras of his report on his previous R22 "record attempt" flight in 2004! Actually his terminology smacks to me of someone who doesn't fly at all but has picked up a bit of second hand knowledge. Enough to take on a record breaking world flight? No way!

And then his www.usaacademy.com flying school web site. Big sounding name, but apart from anything else look at the Gallery section - in terms of office and hangar facilities etc looks completely set up to me.

Wouldn't normally spend time on this, but I do hate charity scams. Of course I could be wrong!
