Flik, the word was EXCEPTIONAL. That they were UAS means they were already in the system even if the IOT age criteria is passed.

Ben has yet to come clean with a good story. Unfortunately many people leave out a critical piece of the jigsaw which often means any advice they get is skewed and often in a way that might raise their hopes or unnecessarily dash them.

I'm looking for some information on the medical standards at OASC. This is not a run of the mill 'I have asthma and I want to be a pilot in the red arrows' query. Ringing OASC itself is not possible at the minute, so if anyone has any information then a PM in my direction would be very appreciated.

From your first question I suspect you are not clear in your mind the roles of the different aircrew. WSOp and Pilot are chalk and cheese. One is an SNCO the other an officer.
Don't worry I know the difference. I'm just trying to find the difference between these two particular jobs in terms of leadership. Many people have said to me that the two roles don't have much of a role as a "leader", and that they are more team players. I was just wondering if anyone agrees/disagrees?

Yes, they tend to be very busy at this time of year. I believe they process scholarships around this time too for boards in the New Year.

AIDU I will watch my 6 closely. Thanks for the warning.

As for OASC, may be they don't get back from their fact finding trip to the antipodes until then.

PN I don't want to post details on an open forum, so would prefer a PM if anyone knows anything.
I realise it's not the best course to follow, but OASC is not taking calls at the moment, and my friendly local MO was not available either.

If it's medical I personally would ring the medical lot upstairs and if it's a question about medical eligibility I doubt you'll get an answer over the phone unless it's really simple (e.g. you suffer from a permanent summer cold and fancy your chances as a pilot). By the fact you don't want to disclose yours already sounds quite complicated and you'll probably find that the poor people in candidate processing won't be able to help you either and I highly doubt Gp Capt OASC or the President of the Med Board will have the time to chat to you over the phone.
Why don't you hint at us what your issue is? It's not like we know who you are
Ring the number that came with your med forms. Not candidate processing. I've rung the med centre but that was because I had to change Docs post-leaving uni and needed to know whether they wanted the new Docs name. They answered the phone after around 4 rings

I know what it is Neeps. You have ginger hair and are afraid that if you are sat in a crew room people will notice the faint smell of wee that accompanies you. Don't worry, nobody will say anything as ginger hair is treatable with a little hair dye.
Was that an attempt at banter AIDU? I hope you don't pull 'zingers' like that out at happy hour. Or maybe you do.

Seeing as you seem to be quite enthralled by what my medical condition could be, they seem to be currently investigating Inflammatory bowel disease (which I know would preclude me from service, and so far the tests have come back negative.) and bowel cancer. Obviously I am in no fit state at the moment to continue with an application, so my obvious question would then be if I have a curable condition, and it is subsequently cured could I then join the services.

Thanks for your helpful, and brilliant input though.

Neeps,

Sorry to hear that and only the doctors at OASC will be able to give a definitive answer. Assuming that is only a 'similar' what if condition the best we can offer is a probably 'no chance'.

It all boils down to training risk, return of service and long term costs.

In the short term you might become a training risk, unable to provide return of service and ultimately walk away with a disability pay out. The RAF is not part of the welfare state and avoids risk and cost where it can be reasonably anticipated.

The whole ball park changes if the problem arises once you have joined and they used to do everything possible to return you to duty although that level of medical care has been transfered to the NHS the principle still applies. By getting you fit again it ensures the 'return of service' and delays the inevitable disability payment until much later.

So bottom line, only the medical board at OASC will say yeah or nay.

AIDU, when was the operation?

If you wish to discontinue your application I would ring candidate processing. I get through first time every time I have called (only twice about missing post) - ring after 1400 normally.

I would also speak to the med centre regarding if it was cured - all depends on what drugs they give you. Someone I know was made TMU for a year post application (potentially PMU) over the drugs they used for IBS. Be careful - steer clear of herbal remedies. If it is a yes to your curable question, I would get a list of 'safe' drugs/meds that you can take.

Good luck.

Whats it like going through OASC at the moment? Are there more jobs available? When I went through in May 05 there was one selection a week and they were taking on hardly anyone due to the cut backs. We were even told by the selectors not to get our hopes up!
I heard a rumour a while ago that the number of selections had gone up to three a week!

Is it now a more fruitful time to be applying for a second go?????

I believe there are two boards a week at present.

Don't worry about the number of vacancies - you only need one place! TBH, however, I'd be concerned about the fact that you only appear interested in giving it another go because the statistics are in your favour - if you're keen, why haven't you just done all you can to prepare yourself to the best of your ability, and had another go already? Surely it is better to be the best candidate out of a hundred, rather than the best candidate out of twenty? Personally, I'd certainly take more pride in knowing my selection was down to my hard work and innate abilities, rather than a lack of competition ...

Hi
I have a couple of questions that I hope you guys can help with.
Basically I need to know a little about the WSOp lifestyle. What’s the day to day life like? Would you do it again? How has it evolved compared to when you signed up?
Cheers.

ND, I do believe you will find an answer of some sorts in this thread. Failing that try searching pprune for WSOp Lifestyle.

Artist Junior has been awarded a Fleet Air Arm Officers Association Gliding Scholarship for 2008.

Looking at the process, it looks as though they may not have had as many applicants as they have places (56 in total, of which the FAAOA sponsors 28, I think). There may still be slots for 2008, but it's certainly worth applying for 2009. You need to be aged 16-23, and intending to apply to join the FAA as an aircrew officer.

Hi guys.

P Nav – cheers I found what I was after with search.
One thing I’ve not found – can WSOp change trades, acoustic to crewman for example?
Cheers

Hi there,

I realise this has been asked many times but can someone save me going through 100 + pages to find out the following:

Can anyone point me in the direction of any suitable websites / books to give me an idea on RAF Aptitude testing / standards. Obviously I have a rough idea from my own research but I am hoping to get peoples views that fly already or have recently sat the tests.

Many thanks
