A_A, I agree with you in respect of 'the hard part is getting a place at BRNC'. For those of you that don't know, I passed AIB with a FAT score of 120 (Pilot) and didn't get a place (far from it according my debrief).

However, you do get two chances to sit you FAT's, I shall be doing my second attempt soon in the hope of boosting myscore.

You will see your FAT scores at a later date, however. Probably for the first time at grading. The lowest score I saw there was 135, so a_a is bang on the money.

Just proves how desperate the Navy are if they are prepared to take the under educated and sick and lame.
1.4G, I am so pleased that you are now on my ignore list. You really do come across as a complete numpty/walter. So what if the lad has been ill? He recognises it, wants to do something about it and realises above all that he has many, many hurdles ahead of him. Give the boy a little encouragement, not abuse and who knows?? He could be the next John McCrea.

Just a quick question,

I passed the FAT in November 2006 and had a date for AIB, at around the same time I received word from the Police that I had received a place on their next intake from an application I made 2 years before, after the most difficult of decisions I opted to join the Police. Although I do enjoy my current job, not one day goes by when I do not think of the days I spent on a Famil Visit with the FAA.
I am going to contact the AFCO but does anyone know if the process would be shortened due to the stage I got to last time and would I have to sit the FAT again?

007 - what do you think you FATs score was? If they gave you a good or above, then crack on, as your FAT score will stand. Can't be exact about how quickly you'll get to AIB, but I'd guess 10 weeks.

AA,Thanks for prompt reply, i'm impressed.

I did phone Cranwell at the time but didn't get the actual score. Although the RN Officer who told me I had passed said that I had a good Pilot and Observer score, fingers crossed. I'll get on to the AFCO and hopefully get the ball rolling.

There's four bands - pass, good, very good and exceptional, or words to that effect. Right now a pass is not really good enough, as it equates to a 112-129 score, roughly. 130 or above is the minimum needed to get a place at BRNC, and has been for at least the last year.

Without pretending I have any knowledge apart from my own speculation, I feel that the bands back in 2006 might have been slightly different to the score bands now. I did the FAT's in October 2006 and was told by Commander Air (RN)?? that I had 'good' scores. I was also told by two different sources, one my own AFCO, that they would be 'very surprised' if I didn't get a place at BRNC.

I don't want to put a 'downer' on anyone who has passed their FAT's, just be realistic if you know your scores. It was my own naive decision to cancel my place at university because I thought I was going to get a place at BRNC.

Hopefully, this year out has been a blessing in disguise as I have been able to travel and develop, I have my OASC selection soon. I am not going to make the same mistake twice, I'm not letting go of my upcoming place at university until I have a firm place on IOT!

Although this is slightly off topic I hope it helps anyone who has been in a similar predicament to me.

Thanks for the info AA and Blimy,
I spoke to the Sqn Ldr from OASC earlier and he is going to forward my scores, so i shall wait for them and then speak to the AFCO.

Actual Scores

AA,

In addition to your post, the current scores required at FAT are:

Pilot - 120
Observer - 112
(sourced last week from my AFCO)

I'm pretty sure you don't need obs anymore (heard from a few sources now... including my AFCO).

An obs pass for a pilot place/pass has not been needed since 1 Nov 06, however, it's pretty unlikely that that you'll achieve a 130 pilot score without passing for obs.

Obs skills are now more highly rated in the pilot scores profile. This reflects the fact that, with the withdrawal of the ASW SK, most RN pilots are now in single pilot aircraft.

Sorry to change the topic but does anybody have any idea when sixth form scolars should hear the results from OASC?

Was a little unsure and the rumour mill suggests early may (this week i guess).
Was wondering if anybody was in the know or has completed the process themselves that could shed some light as it been about 3 months since the selection boards took place.

thanks,
Sam

Awryt mate i went throught the same process in December of 2006,i got my results back in the middle of May 2007 so don't worry they won't have forgotten about you.The longer you have to wait the more chance you have of getting it.What branch did you apply for?

Hi all I am applying for a one year schol. with the Royal Navy (FAA). If I were to attain a Royal Navy scholarship for pilot, would it be automatic to get to BRNC after sixth form or would there be additional AIB boards?

DP - the scholarship interview is AIB, and you'll have an automatic place at BRNC on completing A-levels if you a) get a scholarship and b) get the minimum grades.

Be aware that there are probably only two aircrew scholarships awarded for the one year, and only one for the two year award. Not getting a scholarship is not a failure, though. Your AIB pass is only valid for 12 months, so you may have to go a second time.

The flip side of applying is that you get to complete FATs. That's fine if you score high/very high, but less good if you score lower, and say get a bare pass, as it will count as one of your two attempts. It's generally thought that people peak around 19-20 (learning to drive helps, they think), so taking the FATs at 17 may work against you, or it may work for you.

My honest opinion is that it's not worth applying. The award is pennies, albeit worth something, but not that much. If you are good enough, you'll pass just as easily at age 18, or later, if you go to university, so there's really not that much to be gained. My guess is that there are over fifty applicants for each scholarship. The RN currently seems to be leaning towards giving more scholarships for engineers, as they've got loads of aircrew applicants to choose from without having to offer more carrots.

Check yr PMs.

New Recruit

Hi, i am going to my local AFCO on friday to fill out my application form. I had originally wanted to join as a Weapons Systems Officer, but have been told that as i have a history of asthma i am only eligable for groundcrew (even though i have never had an attack and have a perfect lung capacity). I would like to join as an Intelligence Officer or Fighter Controller as they seem to be near to the pointy end. Are these jobs as good as they seem on the internet and in brochures? I have been warned by freinds in the forces that there may be a lot of gloss involved!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I suggest you get down to the doctor and ask about the asthma diagnosis. How did it come to be suggested that you have it? Pester them, and see if you can get it scrubbed. Find a good specialist if needed.

I would side with your friends. I admit I have a slightly jaundiced view of both roles (having done both to some extent).

First, competition for Int is high as the number of slots is low. As a first tourist your street cred will be low. Once you gain experience you will drift away from the pointy end into a hole in the ground (figuratively speaking).

As for Fighter Controller, fighter controllers fly in the E3. Those that don't will join Int underground! (again figuratively speaking).

Do what A_A says, find out more about your asthma and whether it might affect you as a fighter controller.

The doctor thought i had it when i was ten. Went to the specialist and he said i didnt have it. He then did an allergy test on my wrist and i got lumps like nettle stings when he tested my reaction to pollen. Gutted.
