Don't be sucked into thinking that paying for powered flying lessons will give you any advantage - it won't. The selection process is geared towards finding your aptitude, not your current level of skill. If you are not already a good player of fast-action ball games, or their equivalent on games consoles, then practice your hand-eye-brain co-ordination. Practice your mental maths skills - and work on your life skills - the Duke of Edinburgh programme is ideal.

If you can, join the Air Training Corps and get on a free Gliding Scholarship course. Google for the organisations that provide flying scholarships and apply for all of them...

Good Luck.

Mostly pictures...I started by joining my local A.T.C. squadron and this was a great help in launching my flying career. Good luck with your chosen path, I look back on my time in the service as the best days of my life

Question thanks for the info

thanks for your info, i am already in the air training corps and soon hoping to be promoted to corpral and i am quite worried because my teacher predicted me Bs and Cs and people have told me that most people come in with As, even though i have no medical conditions and 20/20 vision i am not sure what chance i might have and if i should start looking for a different career even though this is my dream career.

The GCSE criteria is the first 5 at A-C including English and Maths. Straight Cs is acceptable although As is better.

As important it the next qualification and that is 2 A levels.

All you are required to do is meet the minimum criteria. As long as you meet the minimums then you will have a chance to show how you can meet the aptitude and personal qualifications at interview and during the tests.

Work hard; no sweat.

Michael,
Don't worry about the grades others have achieved, just concentrate on doing your best. The grades you will achieve at A-levels, GCSE and so on are not the only thing the RAF is looking for - far from it! As I mentioned earlier, it is far more important to be a rounded individual than an inky swot. I didn't get anything like straight As and I got in, so don't worry unnecessarily.

Congratulations on joining the ATC - it will give you a solid grounding for the future. Use it as an opportunity to develop your leadership and knowledge of the RAF, be keen to attend, a good team player and never shirk responsibility and I'm sure the promotions won't stop at Cpl.

One more thing; on this forum it is considered something of a sport to tear into users for their written communications - mercy is seldom shown! Re-read your post below and think about capitals, full stops and other puntucation. It may save you a mauling from some of the other users! (Remember, written communication is a skill required of all RAF Officers! )
Best of luck, mate.

Blunty

Edited to correct the most glaring of my gramatical errors - over to you, pedants!

New Aptitude Tests

Does anyone know of (or done) the new 5 additional aptitude tests at OASC recently, and willing to shed a little light on them.

How recently do you think they were introduced?

My daughter went about four weeks ago for RN aircrew, and the tests she sat were identical to the tests that have been in use since 01 Nov 06. She was led to believe at OASC that the tests themselves are identical to those sat by RAF applicants, though the RAF may use the raw marks differently to produce aptitude scores for P, WSO, WSOp etc.

Having done the pilot battery back in 03 for UAS membership, and the full battery a couple of weeks ago for D/E there are a few new ones. There is also a 'Numerical Reasoning' test, which is on trial and you are asked to partake in, to see if it has a good correlation with their existing test suite. This test is very similar to the verbal reasoning test that is already present but just involves extracting and manipulating numbers and graphs that are given. If you want any more info on the tests that I took then just pm me.

Take a look at the conversations going on on The Student Room, Armed Forces site. Seems that the 5 new tests have just given some experienced UAS hands a severe drubbing. There seem to be 5 new tests that were trialled earlier in the year and are now part of the assessed battery, and also some 'tests under test' that are not currently assessed.

Not convinced by trickcyclists and their tests....

5 hours in a Chipmunk, a weekend in a wet tent and a night in the pub would be far more likely to find the Right Stuff!

Is anyone able to expand on the colour blindness part - i.e. how do they work out whether you are CP1 or CP2? Is it just through the lantern test or through a percentage correct of the book of 15 colour plates with numbers?

Beags, I know that was (probably?) meant in jest - but many a true word spoken....

The aptitude tests are (IMHO) so 'clinical' (as is most of OASC).

The tests have changed since 2004. Hence anyone attending who has sat the aptitudes twice before 04 will sit a battery of 5 new tests. You can prepare to some degree for 3 of the 5 - SDT, digit placement recall and verbal reasoning. The other 2 are much more difficult to prep for and one is heavily weighted for pilot and known as the trace test. The other one is just watching a sequence absorbing colour, maneouvres and placement and answering questions at the end of the sequence regarding what you just saw.
It is apparent that good maths and hand eye coodination doesn't cut it anymore. The weighting has shifted since 04. They are also trialing some new tests at the moment.
Enjoy!

P_N,

Not sure but from what I was told they are wanting systems managers rather than good old pilots. The new tests are all based around Typhoon.

Indeed, I didn't want to say it but the Typhoon already has a pilot

Wasn't "High Street Myopics Incorporated" trying to sell you nice expensive frames I trust?
I agree with NorthernSID - apply for selection and take a real test! - then you can really see what your'e looking for
Best of luck!
