Royal Navy

Sorry guys i tried asking this one while ago but it didnt seem to be well recieved, so one more go...

If i was to try and go for the RAF as a pilot but fail, i know im sounding quite negative but hey, would that almost definately mean the same for navy, or is there still a slim chance, OR just the same chance as if i was trying for the navy from scratch.

thanks guys (hoping for some opinions this time)

Depends what you failed on.

The Royal Navy require good pilot and observer (navigator/WSO-type) scores in the aptitude test to consider you for pilot.

If you failed to get into the RAF on a more subjective trait like leadership potential, then give the RN a go. It's not that their standards are lower, but they will look at you from a slightly different angle and you may do better on the day.

In other words, DO NOT GIVE UP on the basis of 1 knock-back.

Pre 1 Nov 06 you needed to pass for both P and O just to get a Pilot place at BRNC. Since then the way the P score is made up has changed, to include more of the O aptitude, and you only need to pass for P to get a P place, same for O.

The change to the P scoring is because almost all RN aircraft are now single pilot, so simple stick monkey skills are not enough.

So, if you fail RAF OASC aptitude for both Pilot and WSO, then your chances of passing for the RN are slender.

The leadership/officer selection is probably fairly similar overall in terms of outcome, even though it may be done differently, so if you fail for either then you probably won't get a pass in the other service.

yeah asthma is at the back of my mind, good point. Are the navy slightly less strict on asthma, or same as air force.

Craigeedee - asthma's your first hurdle, so get it to the front of your mind. You need to see your GP (I can't believe you haven't done it already - this is vital if you really want to be a pilot), and if it was a misdiagnosis, you will have to ask them to record it as such. If it WASN'T a misdiagnosis, and you DO have asthma, I'm afraid it's bad news for your career ambitions. There is NO point putting yourself through the worry of preparing for an application if the simple fact is that you are permanently barred for medical reasons. If you have asthma on your records, you won't even get to OASC.

Sorry to be harsh, but the rule about asthma is in place for a reason.

Phoning RAF careers would be your easiest course of action. Unless you don't have a phone, in which case I would be wrong.

yeah ok thanks, i'll get on with it. Just feel a bit cheeky asking my GP to change the file on me.

can it be any GP i see on the day, or does it have to be my GP who has the authority to do so.

Craigeedee - you are NOT asking your GP to change your file or falsify your records. You are asking him/her to clarify if you do or don't have asthma, and if you DON'T, you are asking them to ensure that that finding is clear and unambiguous on your medical records.

If they say that you might, or that it is unclear, you need to ask if any further tests can be done to prove or disprove whether you have asthma, so that the result can be given in your records. OASC will not give you the benefit of the doubt.

If they say that you do have asthma, you thank them and leave it at that. Trying to convince your GP to falsify your medical records is not a good idea.

I'd go and see your own GP for this. They won't mind; I sometimes wonder if GP surgeries are only full because of wannabe pilots checking their asthma history ...

RN flying training

Taking into consideration the holds, how long is flight training for rotary in the RN?

BRNC- 9 months
DEFTS- 8 months
DFHS- 6 months
OCU- up to 12 months

Thanks!

PN you might be able to help me here, I was wondering what kind of FATs scores make you 'selectable' for Pilot and WSO. The reason I ask is that I currently have A pass with the RN but my FATs score of 120 for pilot just itsn't going to cut it!

I have started an application with the RAF and wondered how much I would need to improve to be in with a chance in the RAF?

Thanks, Blimy

They're desperate and are taking anyone at the mo as long as you have passed aptitude. Some guy was on his fam had pretty much bombed out of the interview and displayed a glimmer of leadership potential and they took him.

Bitter, moi!?

Damnit - beaten to it - I took the long way and Googled:

raf aircrew vision standards

None of those words are classified, secret or at odds to what you wish to know, Wanabie.
