how the melbourne open day went.

hey, i jsut attended the interviews on the 7th may and i thought you'd like to know how the day went, it may be different this time. but i hope this helps people out there who is going to the day.

Sunday was open day which we watched videos on dubai etc. question and answer session. looking at resumes one at a time. started at about 9am and went till about 12 noon.
THen i got a call back on sunday at about 1500 to say that i had made it
to round two and to be at the Rialto hotel at 9am sharp on monday.be available all day to do activitys. wear
business attire, with hair done nice.

Monday - started off with waiting around in the foyer to talk to people
for about 30mins (made sure i mingled with most people) there were about
60 of us maybe 80% girls and 20% boys. then we were invited into the
room with chairs in rows. we had another qustion and answer session
that went on for about an hour giving us the opportunity to ask
questions that we wanted answered. i asked "after the 3year contract
does emarites organise to extend your visa or do we have to apply for
another one?" i thought that was good so that hten it shows that i'm
looking into the future and that i was in for the long haul. (this
website definatelly helped) people were asking everything that was on
the video the day before which was really dumb.
then we got split into groups numbers # 1 to # 30 in one group and # 30
to # 60 in another. the second group got asked to leave the room and
come back in about an hour. we then slit into another group # 1 to #15
and #15 to #30. there were two officers for the duration. we moved our
chairs into sequence (1 to 15) in a circle and then had 5 minutes to
find out about the person on your right hand side. then the other person
askes about you. then we were to stand up and tell the other people.
questions were......
What is your most embarressing moment?
Where do you want to visit in the world? and why?
What famous person do you admire?

this process took about a 30mins.

Then we had another activity.
this time as a group discuss what 3 major impacts that affects the world
and you cant vote it has to be a discussion, also come up with idea to
change this.
we chose........
terrism, global warming, and mmmmm....i cant remember! then we had to get up and talk about
it then after that we had an hour break while the other 30 people went in.

then we all went in (all 60 of us) and got given a letter if we got
through or not. i got through.
this took it down to 30people.

then we got split into 15 again and we stayed in the room and the other
15 went out for another hour break.
then we got split again and we had more discussions.

we got given A4 cards with scnarios (cant spell!) on them. it was
like....

a company had a employee of the year award to give to a employee who had
exceeded customer expectations. then it stated about 8 people and what
they had done. things like david had saved someone from drowning out of
duty.
sandra had saved a childs life whilst the child was on the conveyer belt
(baggage area) bill had cut costs down for the company sally removed a
intoxicated pax from opening her aircraft door.

and so on.

we had to eliminate to find the best person, having 20mins to discuss.
one person then stood up and told the officers why and if we all agreed.

then agian we had another card. this time it was. 150 employees are
lacking motivation in a company and the company wants to do somethng for
the staff you have a weekend for a trip away, where will you go, what
will you do, what is the budget, and some staff have children so they
need baby sitting facilitys and 5 staff are known to get quite
intoxicated and roudy.
discuss....you have 20mins.
after that one person sstood up and told the officers what we had come
up with.

then we went out and had a break. be back in 45minutes.

elimination time. another letter. congrats you have made it to the
next round. another 5 people i think got eliminated making it to about
25 people.

after out break we went back in and had to fill out forms to do with
when we had to give our current work notice, name D.O.B etc. then we
did a 180 psychology test that took about an hour. questions on it like
would you much rather read the arts section of the newspaper or the
sports section?
then they organised times to go back and have a 4th one on one
interview.
you had to bring 2 reference letters with
signatures, specific sized photos, copys of educational certificates,
passports etc.
they also pulled each of us asside and asked if we had any identifying
marks on our body, (obiouslly a round about way to ask if we had any
tatoos) then that was it. it was about 5.45pm by this stage.

one on one interview -
went through all documents and papers. then questions.
they were...........from what i can remember its all abit of a blur my
mind is tired!
we had to give specific examples and situations. like "I did this" " i
felt like this" the result was this" etc.

- what aspests do you like about your job.
- give a situation when you have had to deal with an agressive customer and
what was the outcome and could you have delt with the situation any
different, and how did you feel.
- give a situation when you have gone above and beyoned customers
expectations and why did you do this
- when have you broken the rules to benifit a customer
- when would you never brake a rule in your work enviroment and why.
- give a situation on when youve found a fellow employee has been
doing things their way and you know its not the rihgt way and how have
you addressed the situation and what was the outcome.
- turn that question around and someone is telling you your doing it
wrong.how did you feel.
- when have you helped out another employee and why did oyu do it.
- what is you greatest achievement. and why, and how did you feel
- why does dubai intrest you.

then that was it. went home. will here from them in 6 weeks.

i heard a week and a half later. got a phone call for a medical, so they sent me all the stuff i had to get done at my own expense. also they have booked my on a flight to dubai on the 6th july obviously depending on my meds.

- blood tests (heamogloben and hiv)
- audiogram report
- dental report with all the work you've had on your teeth. plus OPG xray. and another from of dental xrays.
- pap report
- chest xray and report
- full doctors report. things like history on vacinations etc.

had to fax it all through appart from the xrays. also they said this is not a form of employment but yet they have booked me on a flight!
when i go i have to bring 20passport size photos and 4 other full length photos plus my xrays and copies of family members passports etc.

and now a 3days later after faxing my meds through i'm waiting for the phone call!!!

my advise fro the day if you get through is have copy o f photos ready passport ones with a plain background and smilling, hair neat and back. full length - hands by your side, wearing a skirt (for girls) to the knee with tan stockings, and a blazer jacket that is nicelly fitted. smilling a must. try and get the floor the same colour as the background as it makes you look taller, thats what they said too me. if you've got a white background wear a dard suit. ive had to get my photos done three times and its frustrating and costly. in the end ive jsut got normal digital ones done if you cant get professional ones. have also ready a copy of your hightest level of education VCE a must. jsut so if you get through you dont have to worry about it, that would have helped me.

remember to smile and sit up straight, remember your a lady! (if you are!!)

hope it all goes well, good luck and let me know if you want anymore info or anyone else, its nice to know that were all helping each other out.

fly_away that was amazing, thank you. I was beginning to go through the thousands of posts to find information like that^ but yours was perfect, because i'm from melbourne as well.

Just a few quick questions, how important to do you think height is?
Is it more difficult (or less difficult) for a guy to get through? And does the guy have to be gay?
Does speaking arabic actually help your chances?
And lastly, if i wore a blazer with plain black top (rather than a shirt), black pants and formal shoes to the open day, would that be fine? Do i actually need a shirt and tie? (I'd wear a shirt if i got through to the next round, but would i need a tie for that?)

Thanks so much for your help and congratulations on getting all the way through .

FLY AWAY

Hi Fly Away....

Well done girl !!!! Good on you and thank you soooooooo much, you really took the trouble to help us all....THANK YOU

Just to let you know, I am going to the Brisbane Open Day this 10th June 06....I have received so much tips from this website and I want to say thank you to each and everyone here.

Fly Away....the questions are rather serious ones....well, in your opinion, do you think the recruiters are looking for brain, in other words, do we really need to know the smartest answers or are they actually just checking your style of communication and personality? What do you think?

What would you advise us not to do during the discussion sessions? Hope you can help me here...

I wish you all the very best and hope that you will soon be flying with Emirates and if it's God's will, we might meet one day soon in Dubai.

Cheers

Luv always...

Hi guys,
I went through the same process for the Sydney open day...(sitting infront of the computer at the moment with a very sore arm from all my needle jabs ouch!) and had the same question about "what would you change about Australia".
I think they are looking for someone that puts their ideas across but also listens to others. We had a guy in our group that was bringing out all these statitics about the government and really pushing his views across and he didn't make it to the next round. Also don't tell someone that their idea is wrong. Maybe say like that was great but how about this etc etc.
They don't care whether you get the answer right or wrong as long as you can show why you came to that answer and that you worked as a group to get through it.
Also keep and eye on the time as they only give you 10 minutes to choose three topics and you don't want to spend all the time on the 1st idea.
If you don't make it maybe its not your time. They told us that the reason people were cut was because they were not ready to be cabin crew.
Good luck

hi guys, thak you so much for all the advice/help that you have been giving. it is truly heartwarming to see people still helping each other out, especially to see it coming from all over the world.

i passed the preliminary interview with emirates' apointed agency here in our country and i will be having my emirates assessment day on the 22nd of june and i am very nervous. i am a fresh graduate and do not have experience especially in customer care. does anyone out there know how the assessment/final interview is like in the philippines? cloud 9's post was very informative but i am a bit apprehensive that the process/questions would not be the same as that here in our country. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much and good luck to everyone!

What's life as a Emirates Cabin Crew?

Hi all!!
I applied and got thru all the rounds for Emirates recently. I'm seriously contemplating if I should go for it, cuz firstly my boyfriend objects to me going to Dubai, and secondly, I heard stories of how men in Dubai are perverts..

Can any cabin crew tell me what is it really like to be in Emirates?? Life, pay, living conditions, flying experience, etc...

I really appreciate any input here!

I am not a cabin crew, but have friends there....I have never heard anything like that from them. All I hear is that, it's great fun. The job of cc is tiring BUT big time exciting and fun, especially if you want a career and a lifestyle together because it is definitely a lifestyle.....on the move and always on the move!!!! And $$$$$$$$$$

My advice to you gal....go for it!!!!! with an open mind, have some goals set for yourself. Never let your boyfriend make up your mind....K

All the best

wishingtofly sooooooooooooo much and dying to be in your shoes!!!!!!

Hi there!

You can definitely still go to the open day even if you dont get any other email from Emirates. Two of the girls I kept in touch with from the recent Syd open day made it through and are now doing their medicals...and they just turned up on the day so go for it! you have nothing to lose

its a range of industries really---as long as you have customer service under your belt, it's a lot easier. I've come from working in Media & in retail (back in my uni days) and i made it through..other applicants have been receptionists/stagehands/ex cabin crew/hotel and hospitality...i have heard also that someone was a bricklayer and he is working with Emirates now! But you can some from any industry as long as you have got the customer service experience becuase that is what will be asked of you in your interviews and assessments.

Hope that helps

Best to have your photos straight on. I had to get mine retaken--very costly!! make sure with your full length photo, that you stand so you can see both of your legs, with one of the legs slightly turned out..and also make sure your hands are by your side, not clasped in front of your hips...they are very pedantic about the photos

Height - you have to be able to reach 250cm on your tippi toes, i'm like 159cm tall (which is short!!) and i seem to be ok.
Sex - just think about it, i'm not anti gay or any sexuality however your based in a muslim country that doesnt even like different sex living together unless your married. however the majority of guys over there from what i have heard from friends is most of them are gay. jsut dont act it in the interview if your a totally out there one.
Languages - ??? maybe, i dont have any other languages. but definatelly it would help.
Clothes - if i was you, i'd be wearing a shirt and tie. no question about it. remember emarites prides themselves on presentation.

babe to be honest with you i think it all depends on the day. put it this way i'm not the smartest person in the world and ive got through this far and i work for an airline now and i got through it all then too.
From what many people have told me, be yourself coz they can see straight through it. if your a bubbly happy go lucky person be it! they know your nervous, so jsut accept that you are nervous and then you will relax.
Remember in aviation without communication, safety goes out the window. and safety is the main thing to do with an aircraft. you might have all the brains in the world and 100% on every exam you have ever done but is that going ot help you in a decompression, or when someone has a heart attack, yes it may help you in trainning but out there its all different.

jsut make sure you use open body language, you look approachable because when it all comes down to it, its jsut another cumtomer service job with awsome perks that really hard to get into! oh....and make sure whenever you are standing around waiting talk to everyone and compliment people. in the activities you may have to try a sell the person next to you and you may feel like you dotn want ot, but its not what they are looking for, they are looking for how you can get up in front of everyone and talk (body language etc)
good luck!!
