Re: ANYTHING having to do with Emirates Applications

"Preliminary selections will be done in conjunction with our appointed agency Careers"

According to their career portal the open days stated below this headline are only for those who have been invited by their career agency or am I misunderstanding it?

Re: ANYTHING having to do with Emirates Applications

Jani, huhm that is a new thing perhaps about the stockings? I guess maybe they think those wearing black are trying to hide something perhaps?? (Like new shoe marks?! ) Maybe that is for invited applicants...?

Every other day I have been to was a 'walk-in', with a few invited specifically back for the actual interviews from previous assessments who couldn't make it to the previous round of interviews in that city/country... maybe this time they are inviting only... I think it may depend on that city/country and how often they go there to recruit... Think I'll go have another look at the web site - just in case they changed their minds again!

Thanks for the kind comments, and yes, whetever they say to do in the letter, do it!! Including no long CV's, no CV's in folders etc if they say so. Lots of people at the last open days here went up with CV's in folders after they were asked specifically not to have them stapled/clipped/bound etc... I know you all want to go all out to impress, but err on side of caution and take a plain resume/CV as well just in case!! That way, you can impress with the good one if they don't say anything about how it should look!!

Good luck, I'm off to go get my photos done and a new suit...! Ooh shopping, what girls do best! lol...

Re: ANYTHING having to do with Emirates Applications

make sure we can see those pictures!!!! you wont get pics done in the new suit!? girls are strange...

Kirstie, regarding that line about the agencies, all the countries listed with that clause, have a start and end time for the 'walk-in' day when the others do not, one would assume that those days are run by the agency instead of EK staff and once passed the preliminary they would then pass you on to the EK peoples or maybe do it all in house. but i would say the day happens almost exactly like an EK one would, just with different people reviewing the 'merchandise'

hope that helps?

cannard, thank you! But does it mean you could attend the open day even if you don't have an invitation?

Re: ANYTHING having to do with Emirates Applications

Hahaha, good one...

Erm well I meant to get a suit and then get photos, funnily enough managed neither but came home with heaps of stuff anyway.... typical, eh?? Gonna jazz up a suit i already own, can't find anything I like that doesn't look like everything everyone else wears anyway... photos tomorrow now...

Kirstie, I agree with Cannard, after reading the web site again it seems they will just be using recruitment agency staff to conduct the walk-ins/open days rather than the EK recruiters -being realistic, they can't be everywhere at once (even though some of us act like they're god... lol)

"Open Days" are just that - a chance to come in, find out about the company, job etc and submit a resume. As it says on the site "A chance to meet our recruitment team" (or something like that)... invites come later on hopefully!!!

Good luck!!

8000 Cabin Crew needed in Emirates

Cut and paste from www.gulfnews.com 3 days ago
---------

Emirates will recruit 8,000 cabin crew
By Saifur Rahman, Staff Reporter

Dubai: Emirates, which will begin receiving Airbus A380 superjumbos from April next year, will hire 8,000 new cabin crew for its rapidly expanding fleet, said a top official.

It is investing Dh73 million ($20 million) to expand its crew training facility at the Emirates Training Centre in Garhoud.

"We are currently hiring 60 crew members every week. From next year the average recruitment of cabin crew will go up to 100 per week as larger aircraft join the fleet, especially the A380s," said Terry Daly, Emirates Senior Vice-President for Service Delivery.

"This is in addition to the 6,000 cabin crew that we already have.

"By 2011, we will have more than 14,000 cabin crew on our payroll."

Emirates, which has a fleet of more than 80 aircraft, has more than 140 on firm order including 43 A380s, the largest single order of superjumbos.

Construction of the new facility, to be completed by early 2007, has been awarded to ETA-Ascon.

He said the expansion of the training facility will increase its capacity from 28 classrooms to 58 and from a single simulator to three full motion simulators.

"Besides, it will also have a language lab, grooming and appearance, hair-dressing units as well as e-learning facilities," he said.

Emirates provides a six-week crew training course for newcomers and a further two-week refresher course at a later stage.

The training covers all aspects of inflight service including safety and security and emergency landing and evacuation.

"As we are on a strong growth curve that is almost vertical, we have to be prepared for everything," added Daly.

In an effort to ensure that the highest standards are maintained, Emirates also conducts service audits, mystery shopper audits as well as periodic route checks.

The airline recently removed some senior crew members due to their unsatisfactory performance on certain routes and reassigned them to other departments.

Another Open Day...

Well now I am surfing in an effort to stop looking at my phone... all of us who went to the Perth open day today are waiting for 'the call'....

First off I must say the two girls doing the recruiting were FABULOUS!!! Really lovely and bubbly and came across as not intimidating at all... (unlike you-know-who)... anyway whoever made the decision to send them is a legend!!

Both girls were Aussie, one from OLD and one from little Perth , Liz and Rowena. Rowena did most of the talking while Liz observed. She made lots of jokes, was very funny and this time she spoke a lot about what the life is like in Dubai, what the job is like, about her experiences when she started etc etc. Much more Q&A than last time... they showed the two short videos, but not the 'music video' one... they explained that this of course was due to the mourning period in Dubai for the Sheikh... even though they are o/s the video will not be shown as a mark of respect, recruitment has also been toned down. But anyway...

Also this time no survey forms or anything, nothing with names on etc, and this time they did the queues rather than each person go up one at a time. They didn't really do the 'sit and chat' for two minutes like they did last time... just a quick hello, asked the most suitable number to call on and maybe a question for some of us...

I got Rowena, she was very nice, I really wanted to tell her how much I enjoyed her presentation/talk but thought maybe that would look like I was sucking up (but I really did love the way she handled things - everyone laughed so much!!) She even paid me a compliment which was very nice so even though it's now 17:30 I'm still hopeful maybe they'll call me.... last time I got called at nearly 19:30 so there's still hope!!

Again as always lots of people in casual clothes, some current and ex crew. Some interesting things which were said - they will be back in 2 months... also about the fact you don't get superannuation (but apaprently the company bonus can make up for that - she said she once got a bonus of 10 weeks' salary! yikes!) and also the fact there is NO crew rest other than on the ultra-long-haul routes... (I'm guessing NY and DBX-SYD etc)...

But, all in all they were very thorough, they did take the time to tell people that of course Dubai has a down side, every one wil ladjust differently to flying and the physical side of the job... so giving a bit more realistic picture than the other times, which I think everyone appreciated...

Anyway that's enough from me, hopefully I'll hear something soon!

Hey babe!! Glad to hear you're having fun... I guess then the Karachi trips have eased off?

Was weird... I had a dream the other day I came to visit you in Dubai... so maybe soon I will actually be able to (would prefer if it was as a newest crew member, but hey, at this point I'll settle for ANY travel!! Hahaha!!)

Have fun at work!! Where did you go this time?

Always a mystery

Went to the open day and got in to discussion but I failed for final interview. What amazed me is they made this Asian girl and cute Frenchy guy to do Eng test. What the...???? This wasn't my first time applying with EK and I made it to the final at the first time before. But I don't remember seeing anyone being asked to do such a test.I used to be ex-crew in Middle East myself and believe me it's not English that's a problem on board. It's F/As who don't speak Arabics and pax who don't speak English! I know I can't change their regulations and speaking about it will sound like a complaint, but come on... the discussions will make them see the real you?No interviews and no asking referees? Really? You'll know much about them by doing group discussion. You'll know that the person you've chosen have courage to handle passengers who grabbed your ass or kick them out of the plane in emergency evacuation if they hesitated to jump?

Or do they want only blonde girls and straight guys that they like (or gays who can fool them they're straight)and hope for the best they'll make ab good cabin crew?

I dunno about other people, but I see recruiters as normal people. No matter how glamorous or funny, easy going they look - they're human beings.Besides, been talking to a few and they all said similarly to my curiosity "I picked those I felt I liked them"

The reason they want people, or more to the point ,crew, speaking English is that when an Emergency occurs everyone, hopefully, will have some clue of what's going on! It's called communications and it's something that's sadly lacking amongst many of our non native English speaking crew.

English tests

I have to agree with Bymon here... (Shock, horror!! ) but it is important for crew to have a good understanding not just of words but the context of English... it's all well and good for crew to memorise/know the standard phraseologies etc, but when things go to sh!t, many revert to their native tongue...

The other problem you encounter is personal bias/interpretation of what is being said. Prime case that story Rowena told of the Korean crew girl not knowing for 6 months what a loo was, so hence no lav checks.

I'm not sure how much depth of training is given to communication during ab-initio, but in my opinion there can never be enough. What Person A says, and thinks they mean, can mean something totally different to Person B.

For example, the Air Canada DC-9 lav fire..... an F/A told the Capt they didn't think it was 'too serious', however I'm sure a pilot looking at it would have a very different point of view.

During my studies I wrote a thesis regarding communication between CC and flight deck; it's amazing how many occurences from simple misunderstandings of speech happen, and how potentially serious they could be.

E.g the Trident in Staines where the Capt said "Put it in", meaning the altitude, but the F/O interpreted it to mean the slats/flaps.... result: plane stalls, crashes into field killing everyone on board.

Try this one from everyday life:

Scenario: Woman overhears her two friends talking about her new dress:

"What an ugly dress, i wonder that she wore it".

Woman gets huffy and doesn't speak to her friends for a week.

What was actually said: "What a lovely dress, I wonder where she bought it?"

Anyway, enough of my lecturing.... back to the open day....!

These days I just tell myself, that they must have seen something in those selected that I just couldn't see today. Trying to figure it all out will just send you bananas!! Go along again, focus on meeting like-minded people and have some fun, it will put a smile on your face that's sure to get you noticed!!! Good luck!!

SkySista : Yeah that was Perth Open Day but I'd rather stay anonymous. No offense I hope ...hee hee ...

BYMONEK : I understand your point and appreciate it.My opinion might not be a good one but it's a public forum and I only just want to take part in it to share my thoughts, so hopefully I can say what I think.I did have a quick chat with the girl I mentioned. That was her first time doing that, too and I was amazed she also applied with EK several times before(thought I was the only one who still keep trying to chase some not eatable dreams!) She came to OZ when she was little, graduated from a good uni via tertiary entrance exams so I was... you know..a bit surprised.Maybe regulations always change when the recruiters are also changed. There's always a change in this industry anyway.People come and go,just like hotels and restaurants... Well, I don't know if they made it to the final or not coz I didn't get a chance to talk to them after all that.

By the way,are you flying commercial at the moment? I was just going to say that junior crew don't really decide of what to do unless being told by their purser or IM, and it's always quite clear what they want them to do in emergency. In fact, emergency and fire drills are put into matter very seriously during training.I wouldn't be surprised to see an English speaker crew not knowing what the heck they should do if S*** happened because they were in shock...

But I guess you know that well anyway, even though F/Os and Capts don't get to train with the crew.

Oh... I just love my name I can just be as much evil as I like YEAH!!!

P.S. SkySista : I've been reading some of your replies in many topics but I never registered coz don't really feel like talking.Hope there'll be many things we can share, even to argue but with our reasons. And goodluck with your application! Mind if I ask if your photo show you smiling and showing teeth, arms by your side and legs not crossing when you stand?

DA, yes you're totally right about training - it can be the difference of how crew react. Often I've read about crew, even fairly 'inexperienced' crew, who performed well because they were drilled and drilled and practised till they dropped in what to do, so it became second nature.

Then again there is never a 100% guarantee how someone will react until it happens - everyone deals with pressure/shock differently.

For example, a friend of my sister who is a trauma nurse... she was following friends in the car on holidays when the friends' car ran off the road... the nurse jumped out to help but later said she went to pieces and wasn't very effective at all... as it was her friends in the car... so the circumstances can help/hinder too.

I guess they just try to find people who are 'on the ball', as someone said in the earlier pages of this thread, to demonstrate a pattern of quick thinking/decision making that will most likely give the desired response in an emergency...

As for 'junior', or 'new' staff - it's important for them to respect authority, yes. But not to respsect/fear it so much that they're afraid to speak up. I suggest for anyone interested to read the Tony Kern books on CRM and Communication - many many examples of aircraft disasters that were 'allowed' to happen because the F/O was too afraid to speak up, or CC thought 'flight deck knew better than us'.... another couple to look at Atlantic Southeast Airlines Brasilia, and the Kegworth crash...

CC need to be on the ball, I myself (as a groundie)tell the pilots "I don't care how dumb you might think I am, if i think something's off I'm going to tell you about it". They have always said they appreciate my intention even if sometimes what us non-pilots think is a major problem isn't really serious - they'd rather have a false alarm than for us to shut up while they shut down the wrong engine!!! And yes, there have been occasions where the ground staff have been able to bring something to F/D attention that otherwise wouldn't have been noticed...

Anyway I'll stop before this turns into a thread drift (sorry Flyblue) maybe later I can start a thread about CRM issues for CC.....

As for photos... the one she commented on was my head/shoulders pic... I didn't think it was that great but Rowena said 'great photos'... yes i was smiling showing my teeth, the full-length was ok but unfortunately my hands are behind my back - however the 'proper' full length one turned out so gross I wasn't going to put it out in public!!! hahahaha

And it's cool about the anonymity thing... I know how it is...! Good luck for you too!! Are you just applying with EK, or are you gonna apply with others too?

Sky
