I'm sorry to hear that Clogs!!! But good on you for trying to help others through your experience. Interviews can be very daunting, especially ones with questions about difficult situations, but as you said, there's nothing wrong with taking a few seconds to think about what you have been asked.

One thing I found helped me to answer questions (and many of you probably know it too) is to think STAR

the Situation, the Tasks involved, the Action you took, and the Result. Even if the result was bad, show them how you learnt and what you did (or would do) the next time...

There's plenty on the internet about behavioural interviewing, read as much as you can, and as Clogs said, there's nothing like practising (out LOUD) what you want to say, it really does help with the nerves as you have some idea of what to say and how.

Good luck all!!

Hmm... not sure how much help I am, but anyway!

Does anyone know where I can find information about working as cabin crew for Etihad or Gulf Air? I can't seem to find any threads... and since Emirates won't look at me for another year I thought I might try for a couple others...

Hi lc_m, if I'm not wrong, it's by random, I think in fact you may not get much chances to fly back to India.. I'm not too sure about it though.. However the video stated that we may request what flight we want or who we want to fly with, isn't?
Hopefully someone who knows better can help.

I don't work for EK, but I believe the system is as follows.

Routes are bsed on a bidding system. There are 12 groups. Each group is on a list.

Group 1 gets priority for their flights, then group 2, 3, 4 and down the list. Usually group 1 get most of their requested flights. At the end of the month, the group who occupied 1st place, moves to 12th place, and each group moves mup the list. This gives each group one month in the top spot.

Apparently their rostering system looks at all preferences firs, then allocates remaining sectors where there is a gap.

The feedback I have gotten has been quite good.

If I am wrong, or the system has changed, my appologies, hopefully, current EK crew could shed some light on the bidding system.

IJWTF is right (well, from what I last heard), everyone gets a chance to be at 'the top' of the bidding system, so that month you have a good chance to get what you want. I think then after that the '12' group are the ones who do 'reserve' (if there is such a thing) after the preferences have been filled...

I think you can also swap trips, so long as you are not the preferred language speaker and the person you want to swap with is not. If you are both speakers then it shouldn't be a hassle. Of course swaps would always be subject to operational requirements before personal preference...

ek bidding

Hey guys, just reading your posts, you sorta got it right with what bidding system we have here at Ek. But basically we are divided into 7 groups, which rotate each month. We can therefore bid each month for which flights we want, and which ones we don't want!

Quite a good system, especially when you're at the top! You might hear of a lot of crew complaining that the system doesn't work and they don't get what they like, but unfortunately these people expect everything they bid for everytime....this just won't happen, the sh!t flights need crew also!!!

So with regards to that post from india - no it doesn't mean because you're from india you will only fly there - you can fly anywhere you like, JFK one day then MEL the next!

Hey everyone,

I spent a week (!) reading this thread to prepare for the Open Day they held here in Melbourne this week, and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted here - it really helps to know the experiences others have had.

I made it to the group discussion before getting kicked out... I'm not too disappointed, I'm just going to keep attending these things until I'm rendered soulless, or eventually just offered a job!

Has anyone ever tried re-applying before six months was up? I've heard people say they 'heard' stories about others who tried, but has anyone actually tried themselves? Emirates will be back in Melbourne next month and I really want to try again, but I don't particularly want to find out firsthand if the blacklisting rumours are true...

By the way, any other Melbournites here?

Another convert to the Sky method of applying to EK

Seriously though, persistence gets you a long way in the airline world...

I thought there system checked stuff like that. I've been told, that when the recruiters get back to DXB, they load all the info into the database, and a file is flaged iff the applicant has already applied in the last six months.

Persistence has to be the key. What else can we do. Sky, do you think we should tel them we've applied so many times at the first stage? I mean the two minute one/one at the Open Day....

Anyway, I'm off to my sixth one on Sunday!!! I'm actually feeling relaxed about this one, all of the past ones, I've felt very nervous in the days leading up to it.

IJWTF,

At the point I'm at, I'll try anything... though hopefully I won't be needing to go to any more open days in the near future. Yeah, EK is great, but.... it's not the end of the world.. there ARE other airlines out there!!

Good luck whatever you decide!

At the Melb open day, the recruiters said something about our information being put into Emirates' database. But something like 200 people turned up... are they really going to lug 200 peoples' resumes and photographs back to Dubai with them, and proceed to manually enter them into a database one by one? Sounds like rather a lot of hassle for a company that doesn't seem bothered enough to write semi-personal rejection letters

Unless by 'entering info into a database' they mean 'putting resumes through a shredder'...

I really admire you both for being so persistent. I practically had a mental breakdown after my first airline interview Not looking forward to future potential breakdowns, but hell I'm not gonna stop trying (yet anyway). IJWTF, I'd love to hear how you do on your next open day!

There's no way they could be bothered doing that. The first one I ever went to in Sydney had over 600 people, it was packed!!!

I think they only put people in the databae who actually make it through the various rounds, but for one reason or another aren't offered a position.

I'll let you know how it goes...

I have just returned from overseas, and am about to attend EK Open Day tomorrow in SYD.

I have been going through some of the pages on this forum, back to 2003!! Oh my god that's three years ago!!!

Anyway, I flew EK Business class on one of my flights, and have to say it was one of the worst flights I have ever been on. The food was disgusting, and the crew couldn't care less. And this was up at the pointy end.

I simply assumed that I just happened to have a bad crew on that sector. But then I met up with some frinds in BKK, who flew EK from SYD, and they too said that EK was one of the worst they had ever flown with too. Really poor service - my mate pressed the call button 15 times before someone responded, and just a general feeling that the crew didn't give a Sh*t!. They had the same problems on their return flights!

No airline is perfect, but I am keen to know if anyone else has had similar experiences.

I by no means wish for any current EK crew member to take offense, I am simply stating my opinion, and that of my friends. I am sure/hope that the vast majority of EK crew are dedicated service professionals, and hope that I have the opportunity to one day work with you!

I guess it just frustrates me seeing such crap service, knowing that I would be SOOOOOOOOOOO much better, and not being able to have the opportunity.

Anyway, wish me luck for tomorrow!

Smile

That really sucks, doesn't it? It angers me that there are such people employed in the industry when I so desperately want their job and would be willing to do it properly, too.

I haven't been on any EK flights as far as I recall, but my dad's just flown with them on a business trip. Sounded like the flight was pretty good for him (I think he was on business class) - no complaints, anyway. Apparently most of the flight attendants looked to be older than me (I'm 20). Did the flight attendants have a particular 'look' on your flight, IJWTF? Tall blondes? Exotic brunettes? I'm still trying to figure out if EK hires people who fit a certain image.

Anyway, good luck to ya mate. When the ordeal is over let us know how you fared.
