obviously evansb and dook both had light bulbs illuminate at the same time re soviet sphere and Africa... :)

Dook chose the right one with Mozambique

dook 14th Nov 2018 20:23

Vilankulo ?

grizzled 14th Nov 2018 20:30

Those unfamiliar with the ways of Africa would be surprised that Vilankulo airport is in better shape than this one.

dook 14th Nov 2018 20:38

Quelimane ?

grizzled 14th Nov 2018 22:02

Nope. More detail...

Terry Dactil 14th Nov 2018 22:41

How about Nampula ?
That has RWY 23.

grizzled 14th Nov 2018 22:48

Good guess Terry!
But no...

You're all gonna kick yourselves....

jensdad 14th Nov 2018 22:59

I'm not remotely familiar with that part of the world, but my pub-quiz geographical knowledge tells me that Maputo is the capital of said country. wikipedia tells me that its airport has a runway 23? :)

grizzled 14th Nov 2018 23:05

Hahaha! Your pub-quiz knowledge pays off, jensdad!
So, as we say in the pub -- it's your shout!

Here's a view of the distinctive control tower I mentioned earlier...

jensdad 14th Nov 2018 23:10

Thanks, grizzled. That tower looks a bit like a larger-scale version of Alderney's!
I have nothing ready, so Open House :)

I am kicking myself for not answering Maputo last night.
I thought you already gave Dook the credits.
Anyway it wasn’t me this time by snatching it away just before Dook.
I do not have something in store either, so still Open House

OK, try this one:

India Four Two 15th Nov 2018 09:34

Iberia steps? Spain?

kenparry 15th Nov 2018 11:21

Yes and yes

dook 15th Nov 2018 12:11

Mainland or islands ?

kenparry 15th Nov 2018 12:42

Yes, the best first question. Mainland.

dook 15th Nov 2018 13:03

Alicante and Almeria are fairly flat and Britannia operated from those.

However, I bet it's more obscure.

The other jet is America West Airlines but that doesn't help.

Flap40 15th Nov 2018 15:01

It looks more like Girona to me.

dook 15th Nov 2018 15:06

'snot Asturias is it ?

kenparry 15th Nov 2018 15:14

Well, a weird experience the last half hour or so. I've been out briefly, and on trying to log on again kept getting messages about DDoS, and unable to load the website. Anyone else get the same? Then suddenly OK again.

Back to the chase. I think the America West 737 must have been on lease to a European carrier, so it's a bit of a red herring.

Neither of the above guesses, but I would not describe it as obscure. There would often be 3-4 BAL aircraft there together.
