The rifle is a Lee Enfield No 1 Mk 1.
First time you fired it it blew your shoulder off, but last time I fired one (1984) they'd changed to .303 rounds made in India (Radway Green no longer made them) and they weren't half as powerful.

Why - it's a huge continent and just asking for a clue.
