Morning/afternoon all.
I'm intrigued by the word "influential". |
Looks very like Defford to me - home of TRE (Radar and Research Establishment during WWII)
|
Pershore - only for a few days whilst the boffins did some polar diagrams for the (radio) aerial fit on the AEW Shack (repeated a couple of years later at Boscombe when they added more radios!). Of note a relative died when flying out of Defford when his Halifax suffered what became known as rudder reversal and spun in during a radar trial.
Talking of Shackletons, here's a Flight Lieutenant's landing (see SLB's post #9470 re the Colonel's landing) - only two (ish) stripes. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....0d72097b2a.jpg l |
Looks pretty flat.
Was that landing at it's operating base ? |
Was/is flat.
Not a usual operating base. Not very popular (with the locals)! |
A remote part of Scotland maybe.
|
Go South young man.
(And I should have said not very popular with the resident Squadrons) |
There were several places like that back in my flying days.
Perhaps the Welsh coast. |
Not the Welsh side either.
(And it was the landing that wasn't popular!) |
Must be for a good reason then.
We could put our jets down anywhere, including grass if the need arose. Another shot - East Anglia ? |
Very nearly.
Still active, still noisy. |
I'm now looking towards Lincolnshire.
|
The final clue - it still has a lot of 'proper' noise as well
|
I can only think of Coningsby, with noisy jets and some Merlins.
|
Correct on all counts but it could have been any airfield anywhere. Not popular because it was late on a Friday afternoon, a Taceval scramble has just occurred and the only diversion was Leeming - and there was a VVIP Dining In night. We had to go and hide in the local pub!
All yours |
Cheers. Indeed it could have been anywhere, but you stayed around and answered questions.
I forgot to say there's the odd Griffon there as well. My wife's first tour as a controller. How about this one. http://i64.tinypic.com/2q3dld0.jpg |
