Close enough for government work, HH. The Lat/Long you have given is for a long defunct strip with my first picture actually being the UN strip some 3km West of that location. It was used extensively after Morocco annexed this bit of Western Sahara in the early 90s although required(s) mine clearance activity before every flight. The new runway is about 20nm North and doesn't appear on any charts/imagery.

Thank you - - I have to say it's rather an odd story - I was thinking Australia but as far as I was aware the UN haven't been active there. The Sahara is a very large place but I suddenly remembered a picture we received about 5 years ago.

We have Spanish friends - he worked for Medicin sans Frontiers after leaving the day job as a surgeon and she did voluntary work for refugees. They made a number of trips to the refugee camps in Algeria and Spanish Sahara and the pictures they sent looked very like your oblique tho no picture of the airstrip. Luckily there aren't many around - looks liek a hell of a spot TBH

Great challenge!!!

Somewhere... pleasanrer

HH, what a wealth of clues! You make it so easy. Rolling hills in the distance, an ATR in distinctive livery consisting of a blue line, traffic cones and a crew member crooking a knee. I’m going to guess Mediterranean Spain or Greece. Or Romenia... or...

jensdad 26th Jan 2018 23:57

I'll take a punt at Milos, the Greek island of Venus de Milo fame. Only because I've been there and it looks vaguely possible... (and Olympic had a blue cheat line and operated ATRs)

Heathrow Harry 27th Jan 2018 07:51

Can't make it too easy with the first pic - I've had really obscure airports nailed in 38 minutes by the brains on here.... and I have the con because friends of ours had been to the ghastly W Sahara region and sent us a picture 5 years ago........ there are some seriously good people contributing to this thread

And yes Mediterranean ( and a very carefully cropped ATR) and Jensdad is even closer........

Limnos? ........

Heathrow Harry 27th Jan 2018 12:03

No - and there is an old strip right next to the current one................

Gokceada Canakkale Airport... needed the clue to find it!

Correct - used to be called Imbros - a place with a rather unpleasant history of low level ethnic cleansing after 1960.............

Flyer in charge!!!!

Thanks Heathrow Harry.
